I've had more exposure to manga growing up so I personally don't mind whether or not a series is in colour or not.

I feel you on colour taking longer. My first few one shots were in black and white. I was trying to emulate manga screentones because I love the texture it gives off. But it was pretty hard to pull off so I just stuck with colour.

I kind of give myself permission now to take me time with creating my pages

I tend to associate b/w with manga and color with Western comics just based on the fact that I loooove collecting... but it doesn't affect my experience one way or another as long as the art is good!

For me I find colours to be more visually appealing. However if there are too many colours that distracts me as well, hence I only outlined my characters.

I've stuck to a specific colour scheme too, throughout to maintain continuity.
In case you want to read the full thing

Well for me bad coloring can put me off. I quite like b&W or really just a limited pallet when its done well.
Thats the key I say it doesn't matter if its colour or not, it depends on the style and how it's used. A comic doesnt need colour , there are probably people out there that disregard comics due to lack of colour like some with movies but they don't know what they're missing. Art is only half the apeal.

And well back to style, colour will just make it blend into the other colour comics as well so you'd have to go the extra step to make it stand out even more!

My personal comic is coloured because I feel my drawings would be hard to understand it and I'm not gonna play around with shading etc. I'm here to tell my story so for me things like that are sacrificed, though I know it's different for every on.

As people are saying, colored comics have an easier time to grow popular. However, I personally think it depends on what type of story and mood you're going for. Sometimes you want color to tell a story, but many stories also work great in black and white, expecially if that fits the mood.

That said, mine is in grayscale mostly because of time related reasons :joy: and partially because I enjoy the style. But it would work just as well in color, if I had the time to really pull it off. But I know that I would become too perfectionist trying to work out color schemes and harmony.

I prefer comics with lots of colours. I grew up reading manga, lots of it even, but somehow I now enjoy web comics that splash lots of colours in their art. I am picky though, I need people to have a good art style before I dive in... not the prettiest trait of me, I know.

Can I show a comic I enjoy in terms of this? It's based on a novel, and they're a series of mini comics by @surenlicious. I love this art style, this artist has many in fact but she managed to select an art style for her comic that works for her. I know making comics are hard, and there are many styles to do one, but I like how she made hers. Its works in tandem with her written work.

Oh, and here's another one I like. Its...a bit much in terms of professional quality though and I certainly wouldn't force anyone to go WLOP's style, but I like this one too. It shows many many ways there are do to this in terms of fully rendered images, but I can only imagine what this level of quality might do to an artist.

Gaah, thank you so much for your sweet words! I am still new at making comics, like really new omg. I cannot express what it means to me to already have my work being enjoyed!

I think most comics on this site are in color, but personally I don't mind. I like the rough feel of BW comics though I think it's important the icon have some color otherwise it's just not eyecatching enough

I definitely prefer comics in color and 100% admit that I'm spoiled by color at this point. Usually I only like black and white when it fits with the tone of the story, so perhaps it's a bit more sad or realistic to real l life as I find that it really sets the mood. However, nine times out of ten I'll choose colored comics, even if they update less than black and white. Something that I really enjoy though are when there's stories in black and white with rare splashes of colors, for example, maybe only the eyes are colored or certain instances of the comic to really make me pay attention to an object, emotion, scene etc. That's an excellent way to make yourself stand out!

I really do like high quality B&W manga, but for beginner artist comics color is a cheap way tu upgrade visuals.
Also when you start coloring more you will begin to do it faster

Black and white comics are great, and colored comics are great too. It all depends on the comic and what your trying to express visually. Like for example, there is this Tapas comic called Carnivore that uses black and white coloring and is a horror comic. The color scheme helps add to the reading experience and I think if it had color it perhaps wouldn't have the same feel to it. But again, it all depends on how you use it to convey the story.

Colour definitely can improve the experience, especially in newer comics from new artists, or even older experience professional artists. There are some manga that have been going 10years or more and without colour (or sometimes even the coloured panels/front covers) if characters look too similar especially when they're also in similar plot positions I can spend five minutes or more looking at them going "but which smug jerk is that?" so sometimes colour can really help. I enjoy the experience a lot more if I can just look at a character and recognise them straight away, which is why you also see the each character has 1 outfit trope, of course.

And greyscale or B&W or any limited colour pallet is hard. It takes a lot of work to look good and can be really easy to mess up. I know lots of people seem to act like colour comics take longer and are harder (and that's an entire debate on it's own) but it can also absolutely be used a crutch as well.

And the wrong colour scheme can be really jarring too (although that can be on purpose), If you don't know what you're doing colour wise a neon colour pallet doesn't really work with horror and dull colours won't work with sparkly romance (in most cases) if you're not sure forgoing colour can help there too and make it better for the reader.

For reading I don't mind too much. I do have a preference for color but it's slight- I'm another person who got into reading comics in general through the discovery of manga in middle school so I don't mind reading B/W or grayscale either.

That said! I do agree a lot with this statement:

with black and white comics (or even gray scale) the linework has to do a lot more heavy lifting, and you have only values to work with and not hues so it can be a tricky balance to make sure everything reads clearly (of course it gets easier with practice~). Adding color is time consuming, but nice (or even decent) colors pull a loooot of weight towards making something look aesthetically pleasing. I definitely use color as a crutch in my work in this way lol.

This is also very true though :joy: something colored poorly with really super duper over-saturated colors or what have you that you see a lot of newer artists doing can definitely be more offputting than beneficial. Like with everything art-related, there's a balance to be found and practice to be done.

Color doesn't really affect my reading experience. I have read manga and colorful comics, so I'm fine with both

YES!!! I used to read only manga, then I met webtoons, and western comics, now I'm spoiled.

There's comics that benefit from B/W like the walking dead, but other than that, color for me all the way.

Color is more eyecatching, can't deny that, but I still read BW anyway if they have a nice sense of contrast. Good enough enough stories will ignore most of these points, but generally, I like when you can tell background/objects and characters very nicely, and it's not visually polluted every other panel. Really like comics that go for huge contrasts and the planes are masterfully broken up using black and white(and/or gray).

Just for the people who are worried about doing black and white because it might not be as popular: It’s okay! Things like humour me are very well known and they’re only in greyscale. It’s a really good way to show off shadows so if you use a lot of shadows to set your scene it works very well ^^ what I recommend is maybe try including both? It doesn’t have to be all either or and I think it can make a really great story tool to convey more intense emotion. If you get colour all the time, it can be hard to up the emotional engagement with colour alone, but if you go from grey to A fiery red overtone it can make a visual statement

Personally I prefer B/W with screentone shading or grayscale. It's the easiest on the eyes IMO.

I am not necessarily anti-color, I just sometimes find it distracting when it is done poorly or overdone. Tho if someone is good at coloring, that is great.

B/W comics, no tone or grey shading, can work if you know how to set up your contrast right. I think the draw backs is sometimes it can look like a coloring page. I have also seen comics which has a character getting lost in a busy background because there are no contrasts color/shading to help them pop.
