Dumb ideas for your comic/novel that you are glad you scrapped

Me and Typh had a third contributor to our comic at one time and about 80% of his work has been purged from the comic which was a lot...and I mean a lot of his two main characters having weird cosplay sex, squirrel characters named: Peanut, Waffle, Pancakes....frikkin...Pancakes.....groans, characters committing suicide with little to no reason than he was feeling down that day and decided okay let's self hang some characters! One he later regretted he wrote in this whole convoluted story line where he was actually killed by another character due to some secret spy shenanigans in a war that was part of the later chapters. I rescued the character though since he came up with Link's name but I drew his design I felt obligated to bring him back as an actual character for the reboot with a more down to earth and humble story.

I'm not sure there were any major bad ideas I scrapped for Everdream... I think mostly everything I did was reasonably good

I wanted to first do a 10 page short story introducing the minor characters of my longer story: All Broken Gods until I realized no one would know who these characters were until 100 pages in of the final story, I reveal a massive plot point that would only be revealed towards the end of broken gods and I would introduce a character that never will appear in the story at all, not to mention it would be too edgy and over the top for a literal 10 pages comic that was suppose to ease you into a longer plot that contained more serious stuff. why the hell did I think that was a good idea?

Also perhaps I'm glad that I scrapped the incest, power of friendship™️, and the concept every character must have a canon love interest.

With The Skyman, I was going to put a lot more effort into the plant and animal life. I did some research on Doctor Seuss, Avatar (both the Last Airbender and the most overrated movie ever), and whatever other alien cultures I could google.

Then I realized how I wasn't going to be spending much time on any of this, so designing odd shaped trees and coming up with new animals was just a waste of time.

I function more on speed. The longer it takes me to start something, the less likely I will ever start it. I'm currently working on a Trading Card Game, and because of some decisions I made early on, I have 2 cards made and it's taking me forever to design other cards.

I'm glad I just jumped right in for The Skyman, otherwise... Sheesh...

hahaha I mean you're not wrong because I did also write a talking cat comic back in the day, but in this case it just didn't make any sense in the world at all. It was just like randomly there. Just random talking dogs, like a fever dream.

I wanted to write about the different gods of different cultures (West African, Greek, Japanese, Norse, Native American, etc) But then it would complicate things because some gods overlap (Shango in my culture is Thor in Norse mythos) and there isn't much cohesive info on a lot of them (Coyote is viewed differently in different cultures, some gods have 2 line descriptions etc).

I'm glad I didn't go for the "quiet loner" trope. I'm happier with my main character being a super dramatic attention seeker.
Also I was about to make all the characters unlikeable...stupid idea.

You could separate them in different panteons, maybe they have different jurisdictions?? (ex: African Gods take care of people from Africa, Greeks protect Greece, etc..

For the ones that are present in more than one culture, you can make them be "travellers or nomadic deities who accompany their followers whenever they go, even if it causes conflict with other Gods."

Sometimes I think I spend too much time planning my comic, but then I remember that in the early stages one of the characters was a necrophiliac and I’m thankful that I take the time to rein the horrifying influences of my first draft self.

I have a couple for Ivory Weald!

1. Matthias used to have romantic feelings for Felicity rather than familial ones. I ended up scrapping that particularly because of how his character developed--their dynamic in general just ended up ringing brother and sister to me rather than romantic, so that's what I went with (not to mention, I honestly don't think him pursuing a romantic relationship with her would be healthy).
2. Once upon a time, Felicity used to be a princess. Then I did away with that whole royalty shtick and made her an ordinary girl.

Staffinburg's third contributor really didn't bring the comic up to standards, his character names were uninspired. Like Ace, I salvaged a few things and made it more serious, to be taken more seriously.

The powers in my comic used to be kinda overkill. The characters had excessive almost magical super powers that really put the comic at a high starting bar where it would have been difficult to slowly and deliberately increase the action within the comic. It was inspired by My Hero Academia so you know.

I'm glad... in hindsight... that I toned everyone down a bit. It's easier to escalate when you start a little lower in the action department.

when I was like 13 and still writing I made this "hot headed" pyro character.

I still have the character but she's not that typical angry fire thrower anymore

I look back on it now, like what was I thinking?

Holy smokes I started writing this one novel when I was like 10, and, needless to say, I pretty much had to scrap the whole thing and 90% of the character because my ideas were so bad. There were like angels floating around and glowing pink scars and robots and stuff. As my sister likes to say, it was 'baby's first webcomic', but in novel form. XD

The only thing I really kept from it was that there was a god--who judges whether someone should die or not-- who fell in love with a mortal woman due to kindness and is sentenced to live a mortal life when he's caught mooning at her XD. I still really like the idea, but man, that book could use a re-write.
