I mean...I kinda gave up promoting because trying to promote in the vastness of the internet is like sisyphus pushing a rock up a hill. Ultimately, since I make my works as a hobby, theres really no reason for me to promote in the first place so I just stopped?

Besides, I think there are more meaningful and fun ways to engage with the community than promoting your stuff. It devolves into a cycle of "read me! no read me!" which is fine, but for myself I didn't find it productive

If you want your works to be uber popular, quite frankly you have to have high quality works AND a lot of luck. Sometimes you just have to let your works just exist and either they'll pick up or they won't

Oh for sure, promoting isn't easy. It's a lot of effort and usually not a lot of reward. Sometimes it feels like you're screaming into the void.

That said, I agree with @delladz that it's way more rewarding to engage with the community than to just spam your link everywhere and hope people click on it. Not only is it nice to make friends, it's great having other creators to chat with so you don't have to feel like you're going it alone—but it ironically makes for better promotion, because I've found that people are more likely to check out your work when they care about you as a person.

I hate promoting, so I mostly don't. Sometimes I'll mention I have a new story or a new update, but for the most part I just share art from my stories for fun and leave the rest to luck. Actually engaging with people has helped a lot more!

Mostly, I hate being spammed with ads and "read my story" or things like, "yeah, ice cream is nice, but in my story drops name/link ice cream is evil" so I don't do that, lol. So far my strategy of doing the bare minimum has worked better than I hoped.

It's time consuming, and I'd love to use that extra time drawing, but I do know it's necessary.
"You get out what you put in" remains pretty true, sometimes it just takes a real long time before the effort pays off and momentum gets going.

Anyway, I avoid the dread by telling myself the effort will pay off one day

About what? Making friends? People respond to genuine. If you care about them, they're more likely to care about you. But if every conversation is about trying to get people to read your story, it comes off as needy and selfish.

Yep. Also, I’m pretty sure nobody reads promotion threads. It really does feel pointless sometimes.

For me they create choice fatigue. I know it's no one's fault, but sifting through 100s of links to see which ones I might like on top of the stuff I'm already reading can get exhausting. I can see why some people hide promotion threads

Other issues with those threads is that it's a 1st come 1st serve basis since the top comments are the most seen.
Most of them are vague so people just drop their links and go. Ones based on specific genres, art style, settings etc, or specific rules requiring users to support each other tend to be a little less bloated

The biggest issue is that there are no readers here. If someone wants a new web comic to read they are either going to check the front page or ask for recommendations elsewhere like Reddit. I don't think the average Tapas/Webtoon reader knows this place exists

"Screaming in the void" did sound so very accurate. If the platforms aren't helping you in any way the life of your comic is going to be nightmare On the top of studying/working you arre devoted to a project which is not going to receive any traction unless you are extremely lucky OR you are in favor of the algorithm.

The endless promotion is really tiring. I really do wish that we'd receive at least something from the platform as a reward for our daily hard work.

I´m super tired of promoting, all I want to do is to train to get better and to create.
I used to do a lot of promoting and organisation stuff for my music career and I
just can´t do that anymore, I feel like it wastes all of my energy and time

So basically were promoting our books to other writers with other books to write and thier own favourite books to read, and thier sub for sub books to read and thier own personal thingts to do...

Oh yeah. I'm the type who posts on every promotion thread I can find each update. And I also promote on various social media sites.

It gets very tiring, but in return my comics audience has grown a lot since I started last year so I think it's worth it

I'm honestly dreading having to promote my series whenever I get finished with my series. It just feels like e-begging. I've been shadowbanned on Insta and Twitter so that only leaves me Reddit and here. On top of that I feel bad expecting others to check out my work when I may not have time or be interesting in theirs.

@turbojunior18 Pretty much. If you go to the webtoon subreddit, it's a mix of creators sharing their work and readers discussing/recommending their favorite series. I don't think I've seen a post here of someone gushing over/complaining about a series they've read. It's 99% busy creators here.

I’m less tired and more just clueless about how to promote.

I tend to be a lurker on social media and I am not much of a consumer. Ads/commercials don’t really do much to affect me, so I don’t really understand what about them cause people to be interested.

I tell people I run into that I have a comic and I post some of my stuff on Instagram. But I don’t know what to do beyond that. Maybe business card? IDK

I gave up on promoting a WHILE ago, I occasionally pop into the forums to talk to people but idk if its me but tapas feels a little dead / empty compared to when I first joined

Promoting is not really that tiring to me, after all I just copypaste the text on social media whenever there is an update, I use Buffer so I simply make one post and click to share on Instagram, Twitter and FB at the same time. Then I copypaste the text and do the same on BlueSky and Tumblr.

Another thing that does well, at least between creators is not to attach your novel every single time you make a Topic or reply to someone's topic. And only do it when there is in fact a self-promotion factor to the Topic or if someone asks you. Attaching the link whenever you create a topic or while talking to others ends up looking as if you're desperate/a pushover and it will have the opposite effect.
