I did a similar thread a while back, but it's locked now. Anyway, what are your favorite character dynamics? It can be from your own series, from someone else's, whatever you feel like talking about. Ramble to your heart's content!

Make sure to use the spoiler tag for spoilers, any subject matter that might be sensitive, or if you feel like the post is too long. Include excerpts if you want. Feel free to post multiple times, just try not to do it back to back. Promoting once per series is okay too.

Just from off the top of my head as things are, going with Jiwoo-Jisuk-Subin-Wooin group dynamic from Eleceed.

Oooh, group dynamics can be really fun and chaotic. What are they like?

I'll start off with some character dynamics from my current series, Galactiquest.

Leon and Emil

These two's initial dynamic is clear right from Episode 1, so I won't bother putting it under a spoiler. Leon is thoroughly dazzled by Emil and takes all of his attempts to be cool at face value in a way that no one else does. Even Emil is a little caught off guard by this. He loves the attention though, and makes sure to repay the favor. It's hard for the two of them to interact without one of them complimenting the other. They're really each other's hypemen.

Captain Galhardo and Emil

Captain Galhardo is very by-the-books and Emil is very much not. They're close in age, but the captain acts more like a stern father to Emil than an older brother. He's highly competent in all things related to piloting, professionalism, and spaceship maintanace. Emil lacks pretty much all of that. He resigned himself to socializing with and entertaining his crewmates while his brother handled all of the important stuff.

Mild Spoilers

It turns out that when you're living with them for months on end, that's actually a very important skill! They're a great team, but their flaws make them disastrous apart. Their contrast also just makes them really funny together. For example, Emil is much more animated when expressing himself, but his brother is very still. I could get into their upbringing and how deeply it affected them, but that gets into spoiler territory. Plus, we'd be here all day.

Jun and Aiden

Most of the other crew members are offput by Aiden's gruff, grumpy demeanor. Not Jun. Whatever the others think they're dealing with, Jun dealt with slightly worse. Everyone else thinks Jun is so cool and so heroic. Aiden thinks Jun is a dweeb. Sort of. They used to be roommates. Two people from two different walks of life, they miraculously became best friends.

Mild Spoilers

Jun prefers to work from inside of the law while Aiden would rather work towards dismantling it, but they have similar goals. Both can switch sides when it's necessary. Being the eldest on the ship, they can see through each other in a way the others can't. They're really goofy together. I love writing them.

tl;dr:
Jun: "Bro. Bro. Stop talking about how much you hate hierarchies. You're, like, scaring away the authority figures."

Aiden: "Good. :smiling_imp:"

Mia and Aiden

Honestly, I didn't plan for these two to interact much, but every time they do, it leads to some of the funniest exchanges. Aiden has little regard for social norms or authority, and Mia would rather keep her head down and make things go as smoothly as possible. The only thing they have in common is that they mostly want to be left alone. It's fun getting mileage out of that.

Mia and Roxie

Mild Spoilers

Despite Mia being younger, Roxie sees her as the more mature one most of the time. But sometimes, Roxie can make her smile and laugh in a way that makes her feel like a cool senpai (I can't think of any other words right now, and Roxie would call herself a senpai.) She feels honored to get the privilege of peeking into that quiet shell. For Mia, Roxie is a bright spot in her life. I could go further into what that means, but that'd be spoiling some recent episodes.

Jun and Roxie

Roxie has a flair for the dramatic, and hams things up to a point where no one really knows what she's talking about. Neither does Jun, but they play along, completely deadpan. They adore each other. Best friends, might as well have adopted each other.

Leon and ...

Moderate Spoilers

Leon and ???
Leon's kind of weird in that his goals are mostly met within the first few chapters. He wants to get to know some of his crew members better and visit specific points in space (like the Moon), but otherwise, he got exactly what he wanted from the start. Unlike the others, he doesn't really have personal issues, either. Or so it seems. He thought he left those all behind on Earth, but they end up finding a way of coming back to him. Maybe it never really went away.

I'd love to talk about these two more in detail, but it gets into current and future episodes.

Jojo has the best where a Joestar will ally themselves with a bunch weird people with... different backgrounds. I'm sorta obsessed with the concept of people working together despite the fact that they have different beliefs. And I mean CRAZY beliefs. I love seeing crackpots working together with... maybe one or two straightmen?

Anastesia from Jojo has to be my favorite Jobro. The reason the dude is helping out is because he's a simp. He is LITERALLY no different from the villain. They are the exact same except Pucci simps for Dio and... well... God while Anastesia simps for Jolyne. Pucci's a nuclear bomb... Anastesia is a nuclear bomb... you can SAY that Anastesia likes Jolyne for her strong sense of justice and love for family but you can also say the same thing with Pucci... a friggin' priest.

This is going to sound weird, but this Gorrilaz music video just NAILS what I'm looking for whenever I watch something.

I like the idea that there's big dogs around the corner (and I'm talking about Bruce Willis playing himself). They don't care if you're the "main character". They've seen sum stuff that you haven't. It's so cool that they got this big actor to play himself in this fictional role.

I usually like villains who you could EASILY see standing next to the main character but due to poor life choices, they're on the other side of the line.

Uhhh... let's see I like when an author takes time to establish relationships with characters, expanding upon small traits BUT I also appreciate it when the author doesn't even bother having two characters in the same group interact. Like they know they probably won't have anything interesting to say. The special thing about their dynamic is that they don't have one at all.

I hate it so much when writers try to wing it and are like "NOOOOO... they do cool stuff off-screen" (unless when it's a joke, then I think it's fine). I'll appreciate a writer even more if they understand they can't come up with anything and don't even try.

When characters are smart in their own little ways. Not like "I'm the brawn and I'm purely brawn!". Like characters with SPECIFIC knowledge that ends up helping everyone else out in the long run. Like "I'm the brawn! BUT did you know I have this condition and because of that I know a lot about animals?".

I like normal people dealing with fantastic/unusual situations. Then having react how normal people would. It's the situation that is the story, the people are there to react to it.

A "villain" and their "too good for this world" sidekick they somehow spared picked up.
It can work in both comedic or cartoonish way, or in a serious or thought-provoking sentimental way.

I like the dynamic of two friends but one friend is the antagonist while the other is protagonist. Conflicting ideology and morality between these characters are always interesting.

@powerplantanimations I haven't read or watched JJBA beyond Part 1's anime adaptation (and a little of 2) but I've picked up a lot due to a few close friends being into it and general curiosity. I remember getting curious about Pucci and his whole deal, especially with Dio is very interesting. He seems like a cool antagonist.

Every part seems to smash a bunch of fun personalities together, and I've always admired the series from afar because of it.

Edit: Yeah, sometimes two people in the same group just don't click and that's fine. And the parallels between two people on different sides of the same fight who otherwise could've been friends is always :kissing_closed_eyes: :ok_hand:

YES @ that last one. In particular, I find a lot of Sonic characters interesting because of this. Most of them have traits you wouldn't expect from their general archetypes and I like when the games and other media acknowledge it.

@BoomerZ That always makes for a fun form of escapism. Plus you don't have to worry about things like the protagonist knowing things you don't.

@DasIstWunderblyat Ooooh, I could see how both iterations of that trope would play out. Both sound really good!

An overly friendly, innocent, pure personality turns three could-never-be-friends into the closest knit power group. And as the story progresses, the group as a whole continues to influence others from utter refusal to trust anyone to turn for the better over time.

I'm fond of aversions of more standard character dynamics - e.g.:

  • The serious character is the extrovert and the silly character is the introvert; the former nags the latter about common sense and the importance of touching grass.

  • The cheerful character is cynical and selfish and the angsty, brooding character is idealistic and selfless. The latter devotes their life to helping people and takes their cause very seriously, the former tries to get the latter to relax and do whatever the heck they want because nothing matters anyway!

  • Heck, maybe the idealist is selfish and the cynic is selfless. The former is a philosophical egoist who believes selfishness is good and hurting others is ultimately not a rational thing to do for self-interested people; the latter believes people suck and would ruin everything for each other if given then chance and it's up to them to stop that from happening.

Taking it further, I like it when two characters in the same group have a serious issue with each other that never really gets resolved by the end of the story. Like, they're not just 'the bickering ones' and their conflict is fun and wholesome and shows they really do care for each other or anything like that, but they really would rather have nothing to do with each other, and only tolerate each other's presence because of their mutual friends. And it's a source of tension that the group is always going to have to find ways to work around as long as it stays together :'D

Same for me, I feel that the situation or the surroundings can strongly influence and change the characters, conflict doesn't always have to be personified in a single villain or person. You can also take this both in a comedic (for ridiculous situations) or a dramatic direction.

For example, I like the dynamic of a happy, generous character living life and turning cynical and more withdrawn due to bad experiences with other people over time. Perhaps in my eyes a true tragedy.

Cocky/Serious vs witty/mischievous

In the current series I'm working on I'M ̶n̶o̶t̶ A SICK BOY! most fun is taking Evan, a playfully mischievous, flirtatious guy who cares little for rules and pairing with/ pitting him against
no-nonsense or egotistic character types. Those who he can't help himself but irritate lol

On the other hand, the aforementioned side of Evan isn't truly seen in early episodes as he behaves more toned down in the home setting & through the eyes of his little brother Owen (Mc).

Enjoy sibling dynamic too: come from same upbringing yet differing personalities can create such interesting outcomes.

HIDDEN INCASE SPOILERS

Evan's a daring adult who's been a round town while Owen's a sheltered boy who just turned 12 year old. Throughout the series, Owen and Evan are separated from the parents and it gives Owen a chance to see a different side of Evan.

In an upcoming episode, Owen is confused as he watches Evan taunt and aggravate a highly dangerous no-nonsense type opponent (this character is someone they encounter on multiple occasions who seems to know Evan outside the home setting and reveal things that Owen himself would have never known.)

While Evan is naturally reckless , he loves his little brother and does what he can to keep him safe but conflicts do arise as Evan steers off course due to his daring nature. Owen being dependent (due to sheltered upbringing) has no choice but to drag along.

I also enjoy when the mains share differing outlook/growth during the story's situation:
Owen want's to reunite with his parents, he's starts off scared, his acceptance of himself in his 'world's sudden change' is something that happens overtime. Evan however, quickly embraces the change, he is curious to explore the limits of his powers and challenge all odds.

Also love a dynamic that can lead to a bit of role switch between both characters:
The series is supposed to be three seasons, and in final season there is a bit of a role switch. Owen has his trials overtime that push him to become independent & more confident with his powers. There's another important character, one who Evan truly loves but led a complicated relationship with, that character dies while protecting him. This wrecks Evan who goes into a mindless bloody rage ruining the situation even more for himself and his allies. There's a scene where Evan falls to the ground a crying helpless mess and it's Owen who comforts him. Similar to early scenes in the series when Owen felt helpless and Evan comforted him.

In the final battle the brothers reach a point where they better understand each other, retaining what makes each unique but becoming ideal duo. Owen the noble Hero and Evan the playful one.

Actually I love the dynamics between my characters Ellie and Skully, he’s such a grumpy skull, trying to make sure Ellie doesn’t do anything too dumb, but she’s very carefree and ends up in a lot of trouble (mostly because she doesn’t listen to the grumpy skull)

I love seeing relationships (friends or more, I like any) between two apathetic characters that are secretly very psycho, but in a nonchalant way.

It's like they complement each other in their twisted ways, and instead of running away because they're scared, they bring even more madness.

In my novel, the main leads' relationship is kinda like that. There's the apathetic person with bottled anger and the quiet kid with impulsive and self-destructive habits.

I think I just enjoy people getting along with each other. Like people of different backgrounds and interests yet they can still be friends. It’s so wholesome.

I think this is probably why I suck at writing villains because I would rather everyone be friends.

I like old person, young person mentor character dynamics. For example, the movie Karate kid.
