Hello my tappies. What are some of your favorite/least favorite animated shows either on the air or previously aired, but are now cancelled? No offense to anime fans, I like me some anime myself, but this thread is more geared towards the discussion of Western cartoons. Anime is still welcome however.
Ok here goes.
Favorite animated shows:
Amazing World of Gumball (pretty crazy show at times. I like the unique art direction and the general zaniness of the series. Honestly, this show would get just as much air time imo if it was part of adult swim's line up. I say that bc Gumball reminds me of the simpsons at times back when the simpsons was good.
Steven Universe: Admittedly I don't watch this one all that much, but the theme song is catchy and the show has good morals which is always good for the little ones as they often tend to emulate what they see on TV.
Clarence: Don't watch this one all that much either, but it reminds me of the cartoons I grew up with where they often tried to teach a moral/Aesop.
American Dad: At first I didn't care all that much for it, but as the years have gone by, I've found myself tuning in to this show over Family Guy more and more. Seriously, FG could really learn a thing or two from its far more consistently funny sister show.
King of the Hill: I didn't care that much for KoTH when I was younger, but like AD, I've slowly become a fan of KoTH thanks to it bringing up the front of adult swims weekday lineup. I wish Mike Judge could make another season like he did with Beavis and Butthead and make fun of current trends and pop culture. i.e I could easily see the KoTH gang become obsessed with social media and taking "selfies" for one episode which naturally Hank Hill the resident stick in the mud would complain about in only a way that he could.
South Park: There has to be something said for a show that goes where few other animated shows even think of wanting to go while also being actually funny most of the time and not just stupid/shocking. Combined with being up to date on current irl events, its easy to see why South Park has lasted as long as it had. I've found South Park to be my go to show when I want to hear raunchy sometimes vulgar satire on controversial subjects/current events without rolling my eyes while also simultaneously face palming at how poorly the subject matter was handled. cough Family Guy cough
Least Favorite
Uncle Grandpa: Okay, this one's not all bad, but I just find it too stupid to be enjoyable for my refined tastes. In very small doses, UG is alright, but I honestly can't watch more than one episode of it before I switch to another channel. There are a few episodes that I admittedly like such as the one where UG and his friends hunt down an internet troll, but again, its to me more of a miss than a hit.
Teen Titans GO: I cannot think of any other cartoon with as much over exposure that comes at the cost of shows that are actually entertaining like TTG. As someone who sorta grew up with the 2000's Teen Titans cartoon, I was surprised to hear that they rounded up the original cast again to make another cartoon based on the Teen Titans. Unfortunately, GO is what we ended up getting with the creators admitting that they never saw an episode of the 2003 series which could be silly/stupid at times, but also had drama, character development, and some actual depth to it none of which GO has.
If GO was simply a harmless gag series, I don't think any of us would care that it exists, but in addition to the aforementioned overexposure of Teen Titans GO, the show is just plain not funny and imo mean spirited at times. Everyone acts like a dick/bitch to one another all the time and worse, none of the Titans themselves seem to ever get any sort of comeuppance for their actions. Hell, their villains have more moral fiber than they do at times. The fact that GO takes pot shots at fans of the 2003 cartoon and fans of other superheroes on a regular basis doesn't help their case as arguably the worst cartoon in existence right now.
Family Guy: Sometimes, its better to be a short lived cult classic than a past their prime shell of their former selves. I cannot think of any better way to describe the rise and fall of FG. Early on, it was a slightly edgier Simpsons that was actually funny at times. Peter was still an idiot, but a more likeable bumbling dad trying to do whats best for his family sort of idiot who often learnt a lesson at the end of the episode. Brian was a snarky foil to Peter's idiot ideas instead of a egotistical political mouth piece for Seth Macfarlane. Meg was more like Marsha from The Brady Bunch than she was the universe's butt monkey who would receive undue abuse just for existing in the same world as her sociopathic self centered train wreck of a family, etc.
The first few seasons I hold as the golden era of Family Guy (Seasons 1-5). Around Season 6 or 7, I began to notice that Peter started acting too much like an idiot who by all means should have been put in a mental ward for half the shit he's pulled in later seasons often at the cost of his family/friends well being, Brian became a egotistical douchebag who couldn't dare to be wrong about ANYTHING political and who also didn't care who he slept with ala Quagmire (speaking of which, its ironic that they've been at each others throats since season 8 given how much they have in common), Lois went from being a caring mother towards Meg to being just as bad as her husband with her own wild shenanigans, etc.
Flanderizations and radical changes of character aside, Family Guy became too mean spirited in its handling of certain subject matter without the clever satire or venomous, but hilarious jokes aimed at a certain group that South Park usually has in its own dealings with the same subject matter. They also went overboard with the cutaway gags (Conway Twitty anyone?) which hurt FG more than they do to help it. AD had none of those once it found its footing with the two part Saudi Arabia episode in Season 1 and never looked back.
To sum it all up, When the series buttmonkey chews your unsympathetic collective asses out during a hurricane on how terrible a family you are to her, its really telling of how far your show has jumped the shark.
