Has a scene in a anime ever upset you deeply?

I mean in a anime story if some kids had their home planet invaded by aliens, had to watch their parents be killed by these aliens and then had to escape on a spaceship. A viewer watching could think "cool these kids/teenagers can explore the galaxy now in search on a new home while wearing all this awesome clothes and armor. The viewer watching could think this will be the start of an amazing adventure for them and I'm thinking No, their parents were killed and their planet was stolen from them, there isn't anything dazzling about all that.

And even though there isn't anything dazzling about that, for some reason we crave that kind of chaos in stories right?

Not in awhile... i won't say "upset" more like an "aha" moment at the same time.

The entire anime "welcome to NHK"... and scene in yuyu Hakusho where sensui explains his mastaplan... and scene in gatekeepers that show Kageyama's origin story...

You're looking for anime that made me sad on purpose, right? Not anime that made me angry accidentally or that deeply disappointed me.

Clannad is my go-to, especially that second season. They really know how to tug the ol' heartstrings.

If it's just shows then some parts of FMA and Frieren, mostly because of the themes of grief and regret.

Here are scenes that upset me in anime:
- Gurren Lagann ending (my favorite anime of all time. They saved the day, but one sacrifice made me upset that it left me pretty bitter)
- Your Lie in April (ending depressed me. Still remember the heartbreak back in 2015)

Grave of the Fireflies

That's another good one. I remember this was the 1st movie I saw that humanized the other side of war.

I was taught in history class that ww2 Japanese were nothing but inhuman monsters who bayonetted babies and r.aped women. And the atomic bombs were completely justified. Both my grandfathers were veterans of that war. One was USAFFE, the other a guerilla. And I heard stories from my grandmother how they had to look as ugly and smelly as possible to avoid being ra.ped.

And of course the heroic and valiant Filipino and American troops... (equally guilty of war crimes but of course the victors of war dont get prosecuted for war crimes. Captured Japanese put n.aked in chicken cages where you cant even turn around... cigarettes pushed into their open wounds... flame throwered even when surrendering... waterboarded... sleep deprived... starved to death... forced to fight their comrades to death... etc)

War brings out the ugliest of humanity.

Hmm, the scene in FMA and FMA brotherhood, where Edwards mechanical arm got destroied. In FMA, because it was so epicly sad and dramatic (I litterally felt the despair) ind in FMA brotherhood, because they totally destroyed the szene, by making it "funny". Gosh, I was so angry about that ^^' I mean, I love the FMA B version but FMA had just such a different tone to its szenes.

The sandcastle scene from End of Evangelion was deeply upsetting on a personal level when I rewatched the movie a few years ago.

For a moment I saw myself in Shinji’s action and it disturbed me because I don’t want to be Shinji, and especially not the version from EoE. It forced a lot of self introspection on my life and thankfully I never reached the same level as Shinji so now I like to think that I’m a more mature person, but the thought of relating to some of the emotion in that scene still haunts me.

Another answer would be every scene in Wandering Son, because watching someone else living through the same struggle as I did growing up was painful. It also did not help that I watched it during a low point in my life.

When we were taught about the war it was pretty straightforward, all dates and treaties and operations, but it didn't go into detail about the innocent people on both sides or the aftermath. Grave of the Fireflies was a very striking view into the hardship that comes after war and that isn't talked about in school, which I understand, considering we're talking about teaching children.

Having grown up in the US, war is often talked about in a very black and white way, where one side is seen as inherently evil and the other is good. Obviously, war is a lot more complex so I'm glad to be able to read and watch more nuanced depictions of war.

I still don't plan on watching it again though, lol. Three times is two times too many.

Joe himself was clearly bothered by why happened too, and even Alfin was worried about him. Seems unfair that after all the trouble they went through, it ended the way it did, at least for those other than the four title characters.

I watching after some episodes.

I noticed that too. Spoke to different people on both major parties. Their worldview is usually "team total good" vs "team total evil". No nuances. No "theres good and bad people on both sides".

Moderate to centrist leaning ones can have a civilized discussion with...

But it gets really bad in the far extremist ends on each direction. It's all about talking AT you. Everyone who disagrees with them is called a c0mmie or n@z1
