Not exactly on Tapas but I don't venture much in the forums, so my bias is faulty to say the least but people are generally nice here. However, there was a Wattpad author whose personality turns me off from reading their works. Whenever someone ask them a question on their page, they usually reply with sarcasm or don't reply correctly - that's a pet peeve of mine. And just generally being rude. It's sad cause they're regarded as a supposed genius in a particular genre more so when they mixed in with topics or other genre that isn't well-explored with the main genre.
It is when some supposedly big name and/or professional authors (whether it is true or just their delusion of grandeur) come here, then declare that to work underpaid or unpaid with their disproportionate expectations is a privilege us amateurs should be thankful of. Bonus point if they're telling people who knock some sense into them to quit bullying them.
At that point, the only chance I will read their series is to ridicule it. It is very entertaining if their own perceived-importance and skill level is reflected nowhere in their works.
We're all ultimately human. We all have bad days and we all have our own personal character flaws. For instance, I'm a bit neurotic and tend to become hyperfocused on my work to the point of being borderline obsessive-compulsive. And I know that sort of behavior can stress a lot of people out.
Which is why I always try really hard to reel it in and dial it down a notch whenever I'm around other people.
Ultimately though, I think as long as you're trying to be a good person and lift up your fellow writers as opposed to actively putting them down, then you shouldn't ever have to worry about things like that. There's always going to be jerks no matter where you go. But what I found so refreshing about this community, in particular, is the sheer volume of good people I've encountered in my brief time here.
Same, except I can't remember a case where I wanted to read their work to begin with. Generally these entitled people produce stuff that doesn't look attractive to me. But yes for sure it is not helping their work's cause when they act like that.
Especially knowing that on the contrary, I'm open to read less immediately exciting genres/stories if the person sounds interesting.
Yes, mostly from twitter, honestly. I've had to block some nice and generally good people with great art just because they liked to stir the pot, and then it would make everyone else on art twitter rant about the same arguments over and over again--for like weeks. It made me so tired I just had to block.
Even if I absolutely agree with their opinion. I just gotta block. Some people are just really bad about the way they share it, and get very aggressive and send out literal mobs of fans after small accounts...it's not good networking.
As far as the forums go...I don't sub that often to begin with, honestly. So generally the people who cause chaos tend to get banned before I give their work the first glance.
Ey man, chocolate chip cookies taste great but Nestlē steals water from desperate communities and employs unethical child labor to obtain their chocolate. And there are always other places to get chocolate chip cookies. That is basically how I feel about about media.
I'm just going to be blunt. I don't care how "promising" your content is, if you are an asshole to my friends, you are recieving none of my support. There are much more deserving talents out their who strive to be genuine and compassionate and deserve recognition for that. The art world is half about talent, half about connections. So don't expect to get anywhere if you're a dick to everyone.
And yes, I have encountered artists like this (especially way back in the deviantART days. For example sometimes I'd encounter people that rudely homophobic, etc. And as an LGBT+ community member myself with many gay, bi, and trans friends, I found this seriously offputting). And yes, I have absolutely dropped my support for them.
As someone who has been directly told by folks that they avoid reading our group's book because of me...
I have a bit of different thought process about it than the majority here.
I mean it would be ideal if everyone likes you, as a individual, but I think the inverse of the topic is a distinctly worse situation...having people ONLY read your work because they like you, not your work. That'd be horrible.
Ha! All of which I find super valid!
I'm currently reading /following hundreds of comics over 4 sites... You best believe I have a reason for following each of them. If that thing/reason changes...I will drop a title like a Swedish DJ drops the bass at an EM concert.
Nobody got time to read things only because I LIKE someone.
I don't usually care. I separate art from artist. Which is something I learned from the music I listen to. I don't follow band members. I follow their creation and talent in application.
As for comics...it's the same. Unless the author has specifically and personally caused me grief, I don't care. If I like the work, I like the work. But again. I don't follow people, and I also don't expect people to follow me, either.
Dude, there were SO MANY creative people, especially in Hollywood, who in the post-2016 era just would not shut up about talking about politics, to the detriment of their actual work. I'm very politically engaged so I understand, but some people just spent the last four years nonstop talking about a certain you-know-who, and not in a particularly intelligent way either. Regardless of what opinions they had, it did turn me off some creators' work a bit, especially higher-profile authors.
Oh, wow. I'm surprised. I never heard of other people feeling iffy with their personality before. They're usually praised despite the obvious unlikeable attitude being presented and all that. It sucks as well, my friend and basically everyone else in that side of Wattpad see this author as some sort of standard when writing the genre to be honest.
The forum was one of the highlights of my time there as well. I can still remember the time where you have to keep reloading the page in order for the new replies to appear. When I explored the forum after leaving the website years ago, and this was before the forum were removed, I recognized some people still talking to each other in threads I used to go. It sucks that it's gone now.
I don’t mind people mentioning politics, however the issue with this person was they had a very extreme view on everything and made political comics based on very little understanding of political issues. Even their gag comic shifted from a silly slice of life to being rants at companies over character design.
