Have you tried talking to chatGPT or any other AI program about your story?

Honestly, yes, I have tried several applications, but the strangest is ChatGPT, as it always describes me as a dark writer or someone with a talent for destroying people’s feelings... I don’t know if it has developed a sense of humor or if I am laughable.........Of course, I do not mean to use it in writing the story, but rather to identify errors in it.

AI will be incapable of identifying writing errors other than basic grammar and spelling mistakes. Anything to do with plot coherence, tone, use and applicability of metaphors, symbolism, foreshadowing, emotional weight, buildup of tension, character arcs and worldbuilding it is incapable of critiquing because it does not so much understand or read the words but is just a really really advanced autocomplete feature.

You know how your telephone's keyboard knows that after "are you free on" you'll probably write "friday" "the" or the like so offers you those words? That's what AI does. It knows that after stuff like "what do you think of my writing" the online critics whose work it's eaten will say stuff like "your writing is darkly intriguing and you have a talent for setting a scene" etc... So it says that. It's never going to be anything useful to you for writing critique above grade 5 because you're basically asking a newspaper horoscope to tell you what your coworker will bring in for lunch tomorrow: it'll never get that specific.

Also don't give the AI your writing. It's hard enough everyone's writing getting scraped, you've just fed your work into the algorithm to be reused on purpose. It's in there now, it's trained on your stuff.

It could be useful for identifying grammar/sentence structure mistakes or as a more specialized search engine for research since it summarizes okay (though I’d still verify the information with other sources since it’s been know to make stuff up if you use it for this) but it’s not useful for anything else and I don’t think it’s the best tool for that either. Its information is just an amalgamation of other stuff, it doesn’t have a deeper understanding of human or character motives so it won’t be able to provide much useful feedback since it won’t be able to understand the idea of intent/why we make the decisions we do, and it’s not capable of actual creativity either.

I personally don’t use it for anything though.

Girl I don't use ChatGPT for anything. I actively try to keep away from any breed of genAi and chat bots. I've seen ads for Ai that helps you write and I wouldn't let those toneless, souless abominations touch my work with a ten foot pole. I use words far too purposely for some machine pulling out a thesaurus pretending it's making things better. I'll keep the silly squiggly red line under my typos as my only real help, thanks.

I don't need some bot to scrap critiques of other words to regurgitate such back to me. I know my writing is dark, tense, repugnant (in a purposeful way), and what not from my local writing group and my readers (and the fallen readers that couldn't stomach it lol), if my own take on my writing wasn't enough.

And, of course, I wouldn't use it knowing how destructive Ai is. Nor would I willingly feed it my work-- I'm sure it has or will eventually get it eventually, but I want no hand in that. Ya know, the usual arguments.

I've thought about it, but i don't trust it to say anything helpful. These kinds of things only "know" facts and such, I can't trust that it would actually be willing to give me any proper critique

edit: I was correct. I decided to ask it questions about my series, and it got so wrong so many times it was frankly hilarious. It said my protagonist had amnesia! Setsune doesn't have amnesia lol

No and you all need to stop feeding your work to AI. Value your work enough for what it is and for the voice only you can add to it. As a reader I want to read what you have to say, not what AI cobbled together from the stolen works of non-consenting writers. If you want feedback on your work then try asking writing communities like this one. A lot of people here are happy to help!

I do not trust chatGPT. I don't even use it just to play around with it.

As for other programs...I have used an upscaler and I once used a program to remove jpeg artifacts. However, I do not use it for generating images.

The only useful application I've seen for it is a writer who input a situation similar to his scene, and if the output came out too similar then his writing was too generic and he rewrote the scene.

There's nothing the AI won't give you that a good human editor wouldn't. Every time you use an AI for something, even for research, you diminish your own capacity to do that for yourself. You make yourself a lesser human, little by little. You give up your ability to create, to discern, and to judge value.

I see stories with heavy AI input on Tapas from time to time. I'm too lazy to report, but it's generally obvious to me. If an author can't be bothered to write the story themselves, nobody else should invest the time to read it, either.

What I meant is it can give you a lot of information in a concise way which could be useful if you don’t really know where to start. I personally don’t find using it worthwhile though since imo there are more helpful tools. I guess saying it’s okay at summarizing is probably more accurate then “well” though.

Closest I've gotten is asking it questions on a topic I'm not familiar with that I want to quickly understand/make it look like my characters understand it. I also read/listen to a bunch of other videos to make sure all the information is correct, but it serves as a small shortcut for making writing on unfamiliar topics sound more solid.

As with all language learning models, it's a hodgepodge of stuff it's been trained on. Originality is not its strong suit. For that reason it can be an interesting sparring partner because if you KNOW that what ChatGPT spits out is generic, you can at least tell yourself: Well, I'm not gonna write that.

The best application I've found for it is that it does a decent job on providing lists of words, animals, plants and such that I can research further on my own for inspiration.

Actual creative writing, story structure, character arcs, motivation, etc is generally gonna be pretty bland, and I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.
