How much backlog did you build up before posting your comic for the first time?

Before you posted your web comic the first time, how many episodes did you post and make available and how many did you have scheduled from day one?

Honestly. About a years worth for a back up and to be scheduled. Because Ive had bad luck with moving houses, losing income and general bad luck I focused all my time on building it up. lol

I had almost a years worth of material when I started (if I keep weekly updates). About 6 months left!

I can't remember the exact amount, but I think it was something like:

I posted 7 pages up front and then moved to a 1-2 page per week schedule. I wanna say I had about 10-12 pages done before posting so... only a couple of weeks. I def wish I had held out for more... but I was getting impatient: I had started drawing the comic in like April/May and then due to outside circumstances took the summer off, so when September rolled around I was antsy to get going lol. I'm gonna build up more before my next comic

Initially I was posting 1 chapter a month (~10 black and white pages per update, in scroll format), and had about 4 chapters done. As I knew would happen, it caught up over the next 6 months and right now I'm lucky if I can keep 3 pages of buffer But that's ok, since I do this besides my job and I'm not a professional artist. I also switched from BW to color, which doesn't help make things faster.

In terms of story: A lot! I have 55 episodes planned out and outlined, all I need to do is create dialogue.

In terms of the actual comic pages: ...None. My buffer got erased like, right before I started uploading.

Edit: because of my buffer getting wiped my comic is on hiatus lmao

Now, I don't. I'm planning to take a break soon, when I get a decent stopping point. I'll need a buffer when the holidays hit.

For my first comic, I mean the first comic I posted on deviantArt years ago... zero backlog. Just a really vague idea of where the plot was going. I just winged it and tried to made one page per week but was very irregular, then dropped it after 8 pages lol

I make a Prologue and a first episode that I posted within a small distance.
I had a second episode as backup and worked already on the third episode.
Due to illness and holiday, I used my backup really fast.
So I don't have anymore and it's really stressful bc of that Also because I have soo much to do in my job and private right now D:

To start, a buffer of 3 pages with a 4th in progress. For chapter 1, three pages. I miss buffer and I should've made WAY more.

For my first series
I'm sitting at being backlogged until April 2020.
But honestly I'm a little tired of seeing my pages just sitting there. Especially since some are sub-par. I don't want to get further behind by redrawing them either.

My newest series I don't have any buffer. I'm kind of enjoying having a "when I feel like" schedule with it too.

No matter how far you get ahead, you sneeze or stub a toe and you burn right through those things.
