How u draw background?

I really wanna know how u guys draw your webtoon background? I would like to know all sorts of different method

I'm not paid enough to do backgrounds.
So I either use screen tones, or gradients.

People point out how I seem to spend more effort than others in creating backgrounds, and my main series indeed relies a lot on the back/foreground to create a cinematic effect, as well as worldbuilding.

But since I'm trying to make things cinematic, sometimes I can just lazily make a background and then blur it to resemble an off-focus lens blur. But that's only sometimes. Most of the times the backgrounds are in focus.

Ultimately I just enjoy drawing landscapes and backgrounds.

Most of the time I don't really have backgrounds because their location is not important; I just use gradients or custom bushes. But for the times when I need really detailed backgrounds I just fire up Maya and do some 3d modelling like in this panel.

I alternate between highly detailed backgrounds and no backgrounds at all.

I think it looks better than highly detailed backgrounds on every panel. It makes the characters stand out and the page as a whole look more varied.

depends what you want really, a whole host of ways to do backgrounds.

as said gradients or screen tones are quick and easy,
or you can use a program like poser 10 , Daz or sketchup or even blender to make 3d refrence pics.
You could do some perspective drawing the get what you want if your willing to take a bit of time to get there ( check out Mark Crilly on you tube for that)

I use poser to make my refrence pics or i go out with my camera and snap some shots

hence my local woods become the boobieshroom fields

personally i love drawing backgrounds.

Depends on the panel

For urban scenes I bust out the perspectives and go all in on that:

But for natural landscapes I tend to just wing it and hope it looks okay,,, I need to practice perspective in those types of areas

I've also been playing around with more pattern-based backgrounds and watercolor effects though~

I usually use sketchup for detailed work
Manual paint for cinematic backgrounds (especially lanndscape)
Actual picture blurred or color gradient for not so important panel

I use tons and tons of reference images for my background work! It's not so horrifying when you've got a photo to help you along. And I use the CSP perspective tools, they're magical.

Another thing that helped me find the joy in backgrounds is realising that they provide a fun opportunity to show more about the character that inhabits the space/the world you're making. Messy rooms, the amount of coffee cups, what's on the shelves, can tell you a lot about a person.

A thing that also helped me is realising that not every single panel has to have an elaborate background in it; little dialogue panels would just be too busy, but if you've got larger panels you should make the most of them with backgrounds! Break it up; I aim for some bigger detailed piece per page and get lazy the rest of the time. Here's a page from one of my other comics that I'm really proud of the backgrounds in. Dialogue removed as it definitely violates the community standards here. My MC is just getting into her guest room, and the sewing supplies in the corner are both plot relevant and say a lot about how many guests she gets if she's using the spare room as storage. Is this gonna come up for any but the most eagle eyed viewers? Certainly not! I still have fun making it.

If you want immersion, it's important to think of them less as backgrounds and more so as environments--place your characters around the scene and have them interact with it, as opposed to using the background as a mere backdrop.

As for my backgrounds, I paint them. It's my favorite part of the process.

It really depends on what you're going for. I would only recommend using backgrounds to establish a scene or to inform the reader the position of the characters, especially for an action scene. Otherwise using gradients, screentones, or a flat color (for colored comics) for the background can be used so pages don't seem so cluttered.

One the common pieces of advice for starting comics to simplify your comic so that you can get it out quicker, and, for the most part, I'm still following that logic. Having said that, when I do put effort into the background it's usually for some purpose. The most common purpose being either cameo's or foreshadowing.

As for actually making the background I try to have references on hand to work with though I'm also not fond of outright copying stuff that already exists, so I try to put my own spin on them and hopefully make them fit with the rest of the backgrounds in the area.

I'm very lazy making backgrounds. But I rely on rulers and perspectives. but most of the time, screentones and just plain white. depends on the mood or environment of the characters.

I draw backgrounds with immense difficulty! Lol I am trying to push myself to draw them more though! For some of my sets (like Alice's apartment or Vahanae's house) I created the basic layout in sims so I can move the camera around and find good angles/ understand the perspective, but the furniture used are just placeholders as I design my own!

I'm also trying to build up a good library of inspiration and stock photos!

In photoshop, I use the polygon tool set to star in preferences with 100 sides. It makes a nice single perspective. If you want 2 vanishing points duplicate them and put each on one side of the canvas. (this is to set up guidelines for perspective). But most of the time to be fast i just draw some blocks of varying values and Gaussian blur them XD Personally i think the background only matter to set the scene after wards it's fine to keep it simple.
