My personal opinion on the subject is that nothing should be forced into a story. I find it super annoying when characters are pushed together and it seems out of place. They just write in a romantic story that doesn't add anything to the storyline or it completely changes the direction of the story.
MC's don't need successful romantic relationships, they don't even need a relationship period. A few published writers told me the same thing. When you write, if you're characters are very well developed, it's like they become alive on the page and they make their own decisions about their lives. You, as the writer should just go with the flow. You can create a situation of some sort, it could be romantic, but the way the character reacts to the situation, should be what would be normal for that particular for them and not what you're forcing them to do.
I have three characters that went rogue on me and I honestly don't know what they're going to do next. I'm a little afraid.
