I never had braces but I had a palete expander and it did hurt when they first put it on. But over time it didn't hurt so much.

You can ask you parents for meds to help with pain, that might be your best option. I think maybe they should be the people you should be talking to about this instead of reaching out to strangers on this forum.

Typically, some pain and discomfort is expected after you get your braces, which disappears with time and proper care. But there should've been something your dentist provided for the pain (such as dental wax or other pain relief). Do you have access to that?

Right now, ice to help numb the pain will probably be your best bet if you can't contact your parents.

However, when the morning comes, please talk to your parents and dentist so they can work on a better plan.

I know the forums are quicker access, but I do not really trust how well that goes. You do get people who will give good advice, but you'll also get people who either unwittingly give bad advice or will purposefully give bad advice for laughs.

Please practice internet safety.

That sucks! I never had braces. I do have a brace to prevent teeth grinding but I don't think it is the same. The first nights I really had to get used to it.

Painkiller for the first two days. I got mine this year too. The pain fades in time. After the first two days of a new pair they don't hurt much anymore.

Hey! I had braces for about 5 years growing up, so here’s a couple tips to make things easier.

For starters, every time they adjust those brackets, it’s going to hurt. Make sure you’re prepared that day with some light painkillers or ice cream or something that will help lessen the pain. Also, do not eat anything after the adjustment that you will need to chew a lot on. I recommend soups (like tomato soup) or something very soft. Personally, I lived off of ramen those days. But beware the spoon/fork—if you hit it against your teeth by accident, it’s not going to be pleasant.

Second, sometimes those brackets might be too rough and have too many jagged edges and cause problems. That’s okay, you can talk to your orthodontist about it, and they may give you a special kind of wax (or you could request it). Break off a small piece of the wax and smooth it over the bracket causing problems. This should make it so it doesn’t feel as rough.

Unrelated to pain, but I also recommend stocking up on interdental brushes. Those are the short, skinny pick-like things with the bristles on one end. They’re good for cleaning under wires.

Anyway, I think that’s all I’ve got for now. Best of luck to you, and I hope you’re feeling better soon!

Welcome to the first week of every month of your life for the next 2 years or so! Every time they tighten those things, it's gonna feel like you got punched in the jaw.

The soreness will last for a few days each time they get tightened. Everytime you bite into something, it's gonna feel like you're flexing a sore muscle after a workout. Eat soft foods and chew SLOWLY. If it takes you 5 years to chew and swallow, then it is what it is. If the pain is bad enough, advil or just off-brand ibuprofen should help. Ice it if needed to help reduce swelling.

The real killer is gonna be all the kanker sores you're gonna get from the brackets constantly rubbing into your cheeks. You can get dental wax at your pharmacy, or ask your ortho for it to cover the brackets with.

Good luck, and god speed
