Hi, I'm DanzoKei.

I have been thinking about my first original comic called 'Foster', which I had posted on Tapas back in December 2016-January 2017 (I forgot when I first posted, but I'm pretty sure it's around this time). I was only able to do one chapter, because I got way into a fandom at that time and focused on making fancomics for it. Also, my mental health & job took quite a toll on me during that time and caused me to not able to draw for a year.

After working on CEO-san & Hisho-kun5, I have been wondering if I should try working on 'Foster' on the side. It's already been in the back of my head that I'll revive it back once I start drawing again, however there're some things I'm concerned about.

  1. Since CEO-san & Hisho-kun is an ongoing series and still in the beginning, is it okay if I work on another project on the side? I'm worried it might hinder with the updates.
  2. I'm thinking of revamping Foster 1st chapter. Since originally I planned to make it 4-komas, like Komi-san manga, I wonder if it's better to keep it that way or just revamp it to more Webtoon style?

I would like to hear your opinions about this, just to shed a light on my confused-wishy-washy-self. Thank you for reading

Here are the old cover and a few old pages of the series.
Short Summary of the series: Larry Cruise Foster is a retired military soldier who decide to adopt a kid, Larry, into his life. This is a story of two people and how they build their bond as a family.

This was an attempt to draw them back in 2018. I decided to put 'Foster' on Webtoon CANVAS back in mid-2018, hoping this might 'force' myself to actually work on something but ended up abandoning it for a year before deleting the series from website. I know, it's pathetic

Honestly, if you feel you want to reboot it, and you can afford to put the time and effort into rebooting it, then go for it. But if you feel that it's going to interfere with the other projects that you're doing, then perhaps don't worry about it and put it on the side, but work on it little by little. As for the format, I think the original format that you have for the first version is perfectly fine.

It's interesting that you're talking about reboots since I'm currently working on rebooting my first comic as well, The Chronicles of SolLuna1. I started posting it on Tapas (or Tapastic back then) in 2015, but I stopped working on it due to lack of time/no longer satisfied with where the story was going. But due to the lockdown/being furloughed, I decided to go back and try and work on a reboot of the story since I now have time to do so. The reason why I want to reboot it is because despite not working on it since 2018, the story still rattled inside my head, and slowly evolved. And since I have improved both art and storywise, I feel I can make a better version of the original story.

I'm sorry if I'm rambling, but I hope this will be helpful.

I'd suggest working on the second one one the down low when you have extra time- ie, work on pages, build a buffer, but don't post. You can prioratize the on going comic, and only work of the revived one when you are on schedule and know you have spare time. I actually do this! I know I couldn't handle two projects, so I work on the second really sparingly, but it's nice to have something else to work on occasionally so I don't get bored. Only you can judge how many projects you can actively handle at a time. ^^

I don't really know the answer to #2. I don't normally read 4-komas, or have enough knowledge there to comment. I guess I'd just say to think about which way has the best flow for your specific comic?

On another note, I think the concept for your comic is great! I really like it, and I wish you so much luck getting back into it. =D

Thank you for your answer!

I'm actually unemployed since I quit my job last November 2019. Because of the pandemic, I'm not able to apply any jobs, so I have a lot of time in my hand. But, my time management is pretty poor. :sweat_02: Yeah, I guess it's better to work on it little by little, so I don't lose focus on the current running series. Since I've been working on Webtoon format on CEO-san & Hisho-kun, I started to have second thoughts on the format. If you think it's fine the way it is, that's a relief :cry_01:

For me, 'Foster' has a soft spot in my heart, that's why it's hard for me to let them go. Let's work hard to make a better version of our first comic! :hype_01:

Thank you for your answers and advice!

I have a lot of spare time currently since I'm jobless  I think the hardest thing would be not posting, because whenever I finish a comic I would always want to post it immediately and forgetting I made a schedule for updates before;;; It's almost like adrenaline OTL. I also can't work on two projects at once without ignoring the other one since I tend to lose focus. I really need to discipline myself, so I can stay on line :hype_01:

Well... most of the jokes I want to tell fits the 4-komas, I just started to have second thoughts while working on CEO-san & Hisho-kun which is on Webtoon format, since webtoon format is more easier to read

Thank you for your support  Hopefully I'll be able to release back this comic in the near future :raised_hands:

I agree with @SleepingPoppy. It's better to focus on one comic at a time, rather than end up abandoning both of them.
I don't have a side project, but I do upload separate drawings to DeviantArt. My schedule is usually to draw 4 days a week, then make an entire day just to focus and draw that DA update.

Regarding the format of your comic: I think it's better to draw it on webcomic format. I think 4-koma only fits comics that are purely comedic, like Nozaki-kun. It seems that your comic has heartfelt moments in it too, so the webcomic format would make the flow and transition feel smoother.

About the format, that's what made me consider if I should change it to webtoon format. While there would be some heartfelt moment, a lot of the jokes in it would be better in 4-komas. When I first decided on this format, I got inspired by Komi-san Can't Communicate manga where the mangaka pretty much play around with the 4-komas panel (It's a really good manga, I highly recommend it!), so I thought I might be able to use on 'Foster' as well.

However, I do concern if I still choose 4-komas panel, it might or might not affect when it comes to the heartfelt moments, so I'm in a dilemma :sweat_01:

You could skim through "Refund High School" Maybe it's something you could consider.

They have both comedy and more serious/dramatic moments. It's a mixture of 4-koma and regular panelling.

(I've read a bit of Komi-san, but I didn't really enjoy it-- so I don't remember much  So I can't comment much on it.)

I do think that if you have issues with "commitment" in regards to your projects, you should probably not start a 2nd series so you can keep going without losing focus. (If I started a second series, I'd probably end up wanting to quit the first  But part of it is because of differences/changes I make between the two. I probably chose a better art style, made improvements, etc...)

But if you could work on it on the side, that's even better!

As someone who works on many projects at once (currently working on 3 comics at once and a visual novel) and consistently finished chapters and releases games, I think the key to working on two projects at once is scheduling.

I generally agree with a lot of the advice already given here, but I also think it's important to just, have goals and deadlines when it comes to projects so you know what you're aiming for, and how much time you've got to do so.

I think, if you like both projects and think you can handle it, dipping your toes in and trying to work on both can be really fun and very rewarding, but just know it comes with it's own set of challenges.

You may want to try working on a shorter comic (10 pages or so) on the side of your main project before working on a longer one, just to see how you like it/if you can handle it.

Good luck! Your work looks fun!

@Riisana I heard about Refund High School before, I will try giving it a read. Thank you for the recommendation!

(I guess to each their own. I really enjoy light slice of life story, so Komi-san is my jam! XD)
Well, I think I'm the type that will focus solely on one project at a time, at least as far as I know, but I probably would abandon the project if I find something more interesting;;; :sweat_02: That's why I think the advice for doing it on the side without posting them would be a good idea, so I might just start doing some rough draft of it first.

@DarkChibiShadow OMG..... How could you dabble that many works at a time?! :astonished: Dang, you're a pro!

As for the goals, I'm not really sure if I thought about it OTL. So far, I've been working on CEO-san & Hisho-kun for fun, since it was originally an Instagram Comic with no plan to be a proper comic before. So, basically, CEO-san & Hisho-kun is not a planned comic compared to 'Foster'. But, I might just take the advice of doing it on the side without posting, so at least I won't entirely lose focus on the current project.

Thank you for your input!

@DanzoKei Haha, thank you! It helps that I do work on comics and games full-time thanks to my Patreon supporters and generally having a supportive household. :stuck_out_tongue:
For some people, it works, and for others it really doesn't. It's all just about finding out what works for you, so good luck!
