Tbh, I did come to tapas 1 year ago, but didn't stay for even a few minutes because of the first impression. Now I'm here because I found out it is actually not the case after researching potential site to host my comic. Tapas surely need to do something about it unless they intend it to be that way.

For webtoon, I think that is exactly what they want to establish as because majority of their premium comic are romance, since it is probably what works the best in S.Korea. Majority of their S.Korea tv shows also very heavy on romance theme so probably that's why.

I still meet the requirements after posting for a little less than a year. Minimum used to be 5000 subs for $100, but it's risen since. As for whether or not it's feasible to obtain, it's all about how well your comic caters to the audience and whether or not you get lucky/already have an existing fanbase.

The only thing tapas could do to "do something about it" would be to purposefully break the algorithm and make all gay comics have to fight harder to get noticed on the same level playing field, or remove all categories in which gay comics are most visible from the front page just to push them away from "first impression".

So... basically what traditional media has done for years.
I hope you realize just how homophobic it would be if they did that.

From what I've heard, tapas does not have any intention to intentionally drag down creators for any such reason. And if they were to ever do such a thing, a huge part of their audience and most popular creators would leave in an instant because we will not stand for any such thing. There would be almost nothing left of the site.

My comic still meets the requirments for being in the program when it comes to subs and views, although it's not as much as I used to make with them before I'm personally still happy with amount. I don't think the amount of subs it takes is unrealistic, if you keep regularly updating and advertising your comic you'll hopefully find a good fanbase.

The main reason they made the requirements higher is so that they can keep the program running longer, I was on the program from the first few months it started and it was only supposed to run for like a year. Throughout the year more and more people where able to join the program (with the old requirements) but the list was really huge and while it's great that a lot of people are able to monitize their work i don't think LINE would have been able to keep the program running with the older requirements.
Some comics are reaching up to 200k in followers, the standards aren't the same as when they first started the program where 30K was the most popular comic and LINE has to keep the patreon program with that standard. I wish there was another way to monitize on LINE especially for people with lower sub counts, I heard rumors of having ad revenue?? but I'm not sure...

Nope, I didn't meant it that way, in fact they should not break the algorithm to unfairly give to some other less popular comic. I think you misunderstood me, but hey I think it's my fault too because I did not explain my experience in more details.

What I'm trying to say is, I think the site looks different in a way back then, and a lot of the thumbnail has BL label engraved in it, my thought back then was "Oh! this site is not like webtoon, there's probably no action shounen comic here" then I moved on. I would say the problem is actually how the site is presented, comparatively Webtoon assigned colours to label the genre, unlike Tapas, the genre label is extremely dimmed even until today, it almost looks like they trying to hide it or something. In webtoon, at least I can tell right away it has diverse genre just by the different colour on the genre tags, but back then I thought Tapas is an exclusive BL site.

This is what needs to change (make it very clear that the site has all the genre) unless they intentionally wants it to be that way. Tapas need a way to tell first timer on the site "We have everything here! Come and stay!" way much louder than how it is doing right now. Quick solution would be just do it like webtoon, put colours on the genre tags, make the font bigger, not making it looks like it is purposely trying to hide it like now.

That they focus so much on BL is a shame indeed. Nothing wrong with the genre, but there is so much more out there on Tapas!

Is not a shame, it's what is popular. It's chosen by the audience. Go fight the crowd, if you want, but that's the trend. Same way the trend in Webtoons, per example, is harlequin-esque romance, full of love triangles.

I still think that instead of being so bitter about this or that genre, it would be a better move try to improve your own stuff and find your audience. Scurry and Ghostblade are doing quite well here in Tapas, and are far away from being BL/Romance.

It's realistic to reach the the tier.. since the tier changed webtoon algorithm favor those webtoon that update often.. and make it harder for the one who update more than a week...

So you can update often and update at the most efficient time (depend on your webtoon audience, for me it's saturday 3/4PM)

I published my webtoon in october and I get $100 that month. in december i get $1000. When the tier changes i get $500..
That's all from my hardwork, observing the stats, and magic from BL genre...

Actually, despite what webtoon encouraged in their notice to update more often, the new requirement actually discourages this. The more updates you have, the more your page views get averaged out. The higher the tier, the bigger of a jump in requirement. So for 1k tier, if you think you can earn 300k views every update, I wouldn’t recommend updating too often. I barely made it for THIS month with just 2 updates on average.

Yeah.. atleast if they want to focus on gaining subs first.. then they can update once a week..

if we already have enough subs,we want to focus on pageviews, then we can't update too often.

That's totally true, I would recommend not updating at the end of the month at all , leaving at least 1 week, so that your views can build up and average out better, doing this helped me so much.

I think once a week, or once every 10 days is a healthy schedule to upload, if you need to get subs. More than this, people might start to feel spammed. I dont suggest you to upload every 2 weeks if you don't have already a very comfortable fanbase, like 50k subs, cause your neighboors who update more often will get more subs, more views, you'll end up slowly getting behind in the rank and it will be harder as hell to climb back, specially if you're in a genre with huge competition, like romance and fantasy. Good thing is that readers aren't so bothered about huge chapter lenghts anymore, there are many well succeded, amazing webtoons uploading episodes, sometimes, with 10 panels.

Yea sub is a different subject. You should update as frequent as possible to build yourself a reader base. Pageviews wise, sure updating more often can net you more total pageview in a month because your readers / new readers keep coming back. But in reality that tactic takes a big toll on your pageview average, which is what actually goes into calculating your pledge qualification.

I agree, but even if they update at the end of the month, the views will help for the next month and again on the last day of that new month views will again go to next month, i notice some authors doing that and it works too.
