Isekai yuri yay or nay?

I'm just a lil curious but would you read a yuri light novel with a suicidal female lead ? i feel like yuri has little to no isekai compared to the other categories

I agree with Kelheor. A Isekai Yuri sounds like it would be an interesting read, but a suicidal MC, not so sure about that.

The only turn-off for me would be the isekai part if it will be another fantasy MMORPG world since we got so many already.
Other than that, power to you.

(The suicidal part could be interesting, but you have to be creative in that department to keep people reading.)

Me, a fantasy-loving lesbian running into the thread like "Yes, I'm always up for a good GL isekai-" and then being blindsided by the unexpected "suicidal main character" part that wasn't mentioned in the thread title.

....I mean... I guess if the point is she finds a reason to live in her new world through both a sense of purpose and finding love (or even acceptance for her being gay if she didn't have that in our world and that's why she was suicidal?) that might be a nice story? I'm not sure I'd read a story about just.... sad lesbians though.... I'm personally really tired of stories about sad lesbians, I didn't even like Carol all that much.

hmmm i see.. the majority are not really into the suicidal part. as a massive consumer of isekai ive seen a lot of mcs happy they left their old lives and happily want to have a better one so i thought maybe it would bring something new to the table if the mc didnt really want to live and it ending either in tragedy or the mc gaining a lil bit more will to live.

See, that's when the problem may be. I don't know about others, but the idea of a person killing themselves because they want to appear in the wonderful magical world rubs me the wrong way. I don't mean it's a bad idea to have a suicidal character per se if there are reasons for it, but the fact people right now make isekai a genre where a character suddenly transfers into romantic utopia after their death is just terrible in my opinion.

oh i explained it wrong !! the mc didnt kill themselves in their first life they just didnt have the will to live so they were "happy" about it ig maybe relived but when they thought everything ended, they lived once again. does that make sense ?

It does! I will just tell that you will never be able to appease everyone with any idea, so it's always better to consider whether you want to write (and to read) your story. People's opinions will differ a lot!

yeah that is true i totally agree with that! i was just having doubts after reading the 3000 words (that woke in the middle of the night to write) the next morning. it sounded like garbage to me so i went on the internet

So, a quite few years ago I had a friend named Malcolm Xerxes commit suicide, which means that I have a perspective on this that quite a number of others possibly don't.

It is possible to handle this sort of content well (it is something I deal with in my Re:Apotheosis sequel The Odyssey of Daiki Yamato and one of the other stories collected in Re:Apotheosis - Aftermath), but it's not a plot device, or a character quirk, and should not be treated as such. It needs to be handled with sensitivity and nuance.

So, if you are going to do this, do your research. Make certain that you are presenting it, and the mental illness or circumstances that lead to it, to the reader with accuracy and empathy. And if you're not going to do that, you would be better off finding something else to flesh out your protagonist.

I am OK with GL, would be a bit concerned if it is fetishy yuri stuff.

I agree with other people about the suicide part. I rarely see it handled properly in romance stories. I tend to see it as "lover saves MC from suicide". There always seems to be a quick solution to an issue that can be tied to mental illness and trauma. You could have instead just an MC who is depressed and wishing for something different than the status quo. Think of something like Dorthy from the Wizard of Oz who was unhappy as a poor farmgirl living in the middle of nowhere.

For Isekai....I do hope it's more than just generic medieval Euro-inspired fantasy land with knights and kings/queens.

first of all I'm really sorry for your loss. As someone only diagnoses with severe depression and bpd its gonna be challenging for me give the suicide part justice. Yeah no even my ex partner couldn't save me from my depression (I'm seeking professional help but I'm still not there yet) in that regard I was not gonna handle it like the lover saves the mc kind of trope. Maybe I should stick to depression and trauma after all I am familiar with both topics My own journey would have an influence, that actually said I really don't know how the healing part would happen (as I said I'm not there yet hhh) thank you for your feedback tho ! Ill make sure to check out those titles !
