Looking for an artist. Paid/Unpaid Before you run away, Please read

Hello! My name is Kat, and I am a writer of Fantasy Romance BL and Really anything in the Fantasy Genre. I have been writing since 2019 and since then have amassed a little army of katizens who enjoy reading anything I write.

My first novel is complete and has sorta blown up in the past ten months reaching over 1.5million readers since its start in August last year. My newest book series has already started to mass around 300K readers in a short amount of time since I started writing it full time in May. My huge fan base their number one comment is and always has been. I really wish your novels were webtoons. Well, that is what I would love to accomplish. Right now I do not make enough money to just be pulling hundreds of money out of my pocket to pay someone to do the work that I know they deserve to be paid well for.

However, since I would not only be providing an already complete story and a fan base. I am hoping some of you guys can see the potential for income at a later point. Since the higher the fan base, the more likely hood we have at the series being noticed by the bigwigs. giggles

I am looking for an artist who is okay to draw Boys Love and feels comfortable with drawing at least a kiss scene here or there. Since I have a completed storyline that does include some of those. XD

Even if you’re not interested, try sharing it so it may reach someone who is! It would mean a lot to me.

Required skills:
+ Strong at digital art and male characters
+ Open to feedback
+ Can work from references and maintain consistency.
+ Communicative, open about limitations and schedule.
+ The ability to read the novel we would be turning into a webtoon.
*** If you do not have time to give it at least a once over. I am not sure working together is the right thing for us.

Super useful extra skills, but not required:
+ Comfortable with webtoon, tapas, and or webnovel
+ storyboard experience

This is really up to you. TBH lots of people were saying I was unrealistic with my wishes for at least one episode a week. Which granted I agree with, which is why i started off saying this is up to you. I want to clarify I have zero expectations on delivery or how often it needs to be. I want someone to feel comfortable and relaxed this isn’t some rushed mission. My fans just wanted to see this come to life. I would be thankful for anything as I am an artist too and could actually draw the characters. I am fully capable of that. I just really don’t have the time. And I suck at backgrounds. Like suck. So I get the whole it takes a long time issue. My initial placement of 1 or 2 a week was simply because I was not fully aware of all the steps a webtoon takes. I have now been thoroughly informed. Thank you guys for this information.

It’s extremely important, that I find someone excited about the project or at least really wants to do it. Otherwise, I am not sure how much enjoyment you could really be getting out of it. And I want above everything else for you to be enjoying what you are doing.

Payment

This is negotiable in the future since I am aware the profit would be split. But honestly, the artist deserves more in most of these cases. (I also do art when I have time which with all my fans always begging for more chapters is ... never ever.) But since in a single year, I have amassed over 3million readers across multiple platforms and on MULTIPLE BOOKS.
(meaning my readers follow me around and hop from one book to the next always interested in what I am doing.) My hope is that my readers will all flock to this new content like the greedy happy little katizens that have been begging for it. XD

I'm just going to tell you right now, you're going to have a hard time finding a skilled artist that can/will produce an episode (or two episodes) a week without guaranteed pay. Webtoons that update a full episode each week are typically created by small teams, not a single artist. Or the quality is rushed.

I second @Cronaj, for most artists fully pencilling, inking, coloring, and lettering a 20-40 frame chapter every week is a full time job.

For reference, since you may not realize just how time-consuming comic art can be... A 20-40 panel chapter is the equivalent of about 4-8 comic book pages. Industry standard for comic book art is roughly pencilling one page per day, inking about two pages per day, and coloring and lettering about five pages a day, and that is as their full time job working eight hours a day. If you want one person to do all of that alone, it will take them between 7-14 days to do a single chapter, working eight hours a day, every single day. And that is for a professional or semi-professional artist who can work at that speed. Anyone willing to work for free will not be at "industry standard professional" levels of speed.

If you want an artist to work for you for free, you will need to honestly reevaluate your expectations.

I'm an artist interested in taking a look at your novel. However, like the other commenters are saying, with that turnaround I would feel more comfortable having other people to collaborate with on, say, the backgrounds and/or coloring.

Here's my portfolio site, and while there's not much in the way of anime/manga style artwork on there, style is something I can negotiate. I also have an LGBTQ+ Webtoon I'm working on about ballet.

I'm not an expert, but having to do about a month worth (estimated time of all revenue flows to open, if what your saying is true) of full time work, before money flows in is "suboptimal" for any artist. Unless their a company big shoot, they can't just go into such a defizit. You're the one who should take the risk. If you're sure your gonna make lots of money back, paying a fixed rate at first and then royalties wont hurt your purse.

And you're able to attrack way more good artists. Your helping especially those who strugge to make ends meet, so they can't risk getting no money for some weeks. (Even more so with corona time)

If you don't have the savings to finance it yourself you can always still take a loan or if you want to diminish your own risks even more you could make a fundraiser for the first, let's say, 5 episodes. With your following you ought to gather enough money. Then you can find the most experienced and fitting team of artists your money can buy and let your project prosper.

Have you considered starting a Patreon or something? If you have 3 MILLION readers, there must be some interest in supporting you reading early chapters or something. With the full time workload you're expecting (and then saying you want to double it if the series gets popular), I cannot imagine you finding success in an artist working for free. You get what you pay for, and we can't eat clout.

If you're confident your audience is interested and lucrative @kitkatxk you should consider doing a kickstarter to fund the webcomic. You're current expectations for what can be done in a week are pretty unrealistic, especially if you want quality work, but it sounds like you're in a position to actually potentially form a good partnership if you work on it a little.

Use your audience to fund an artist, and you'll probably get a better response.

I agree with other posts that 20-40 pages per week plus all the required skills is an extremely unreasonable and uneralistic expectation for an unpaid job, especially if there's only one artist. The artist who's working for free would certainly not be able to work full time, either because they're in education or have another full time job. It seems like the only "payment" you can offer is potential income and visibility but it can't pay the bills right now.

There is nothing inherently wrong with looking for an artist who would work for free, because there may be artists out there who are invested in your story enough to want to do that, but you'd have to adjust your quality and quantity expectations drastically.

I second the others who suggested Kickstarter or Patreon since you already have a big following with the demand. You could even adjust the number of releases per month depending how much Patreon support you get.

The per week thing was an idea. I am really open to suggestions. there is no set law. Frankly I and my readers would be happy with once a month or every few months. I am a fellow artist as well and know art is time consuming. I just wasn't aware of how much goes into a page. Forgive me for that. I should have double checked my information. I also draw as well whenever I can. I know it takes up lots of time as I cannot do the art because of time constraints. And I suck at backgrounds. I am better at people.

There is no subscribe option on webnovel where I am most popular. There is readers reading the novel. I have many fans who jump from novel to novel and can see it in my artist stats which are private. They do not show up on the novel page. The site judges engagement off of clicks and how long a person stays on the pages.

I'm curious about what the interface looks like from the author's end. Do you think you could use Windows Snipping Tool to take a snapshot of the numbers?
