My novel is built around depression, healthy mental states of approving of yourself and loving yourself and not always seeking approval from exterior sources, but I'm not sure if my readers catch that since it's shown, not told to them. It's never stated "hey this character has depression or is suffering from a trauma" - it is explicitly shown. And pretty much all central figures to the story suffer from some kind of mental struggle, be it morals, how they were raised, or definitions of 'love vs obedience/love'. Because it's not outright stated, I usually just term it as general "drama". But I, as the author, am constantly mindful of it and adjust conversations to fit this theme.
