Hey guys, a few days ago I received a PM from a newly created account whose username is just a series of numbers.
Sketchy sign #1.

The message began "This is Rebecca, a representative editor from Ringdom." No last name offered, or any real explanation of what the heck Ringdom is. Sketchy sign #2 and 3.
Rebecca went on to say a colleague read my story--no mention of which one, and in fact, my name was never mentioned in the message either, giving the whole thing a copy/paste, mass message, spammy feel. Sketchy sign #4.

But Rebecca said someone read my story and recommended it for their platform. She writes: "I send this message to ask whether you are willing to distribute your work on our platform. We will PAY for this and the benefits should be generous. Besides, we will be devoted to getting your work more exposures and global promotion through all sorts of events!"

I googled Rindgom Story, and at first came up with no results at all. Sketchy sign #5 through 1000. Eventually I found a small reading app on the Google App store called Ringdom, so at least something with the same name exists. Whether or not Rebecca Nolastname is actually affiliated with them is unknown.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone else has received a message like this, and whether it's something I should ignore, report, or respond to. My gut says this is a scheme of some sort, but I suppose it could be legit, if unprofessional.

Was the PM here in the forums? (If so, feel free to flag it if you want to, so we an take a look)

Not in the forums unfortunately.
I've done a little more research in the meantime, and found that the same company also owns Dreame, FicFun, and Starry LTD. From what I've read so far, they are a real company and will really pay you (less than 1 cent per word)--but their contract states they will own copyright (not publishing rights, actual copyright) to your work, among a bunch of other unethical practices.
Someone on Reddit does a really good breakdown of Dreame's contract, and I imagine Ringdom's contract must be similar or the same since they are owned by the same company.

Breakdown of Dreame/Ringdom/FicFun Contract120

Apparently they've been poaching authors on Wattpad for a long time.

I got the same message. It was nearly identical to one I got from a representative of swordstory. looked into it and Starry also owns them

I got the same message and posted on the forums about it, and also took the time to do research into Ringdom. Everything @JBrentonParker said about them is correct. Their practices are incredibly unethical, and they're essentially made entirely of red flags.

19 days later

I've got the same message today I don't know if its light or if someone is going around essentially taking stories and claiming them as their own on another site.

2 months later

I received a message from a 'NicoleTse'.
'Hey there!
Good day for writing! If you wanted to see whether you can get paid by distributing the current work or getting financial support by writing new work, you might want to contact [Email redacted by me]. A brief introduction, some sample chapters or links will be appreciated when reaching out.'
My reply:
'I appreciate you reaching out to me, but considering your account was made this month, you're reaching me out of the blue without any indication of which group- if any- you represent, and are asking me to contact an email that likewise has no immediate indication of relating to a business or company, your account is either a bot, a scammer, or otherwise suspicious-and-therefore-untrustable individual.
Unless you can provide concrete information as to who or what you represent, please refrain from contacting me on this or any platform again.'
Far too much effort for a potential bot? Yeah, but I prefer to be thorough. I received this reply:
'Hi, thanks for your reply. Sorry, no offence, I'm an new editor from Ringdom, and we are a new subsidiary platform of STARY. Please feel free to google Ringdom or check out our Android app onGoogle Play, you will find many readers' comments over there. Our official site:
[Site link redacted by me, but has the same 'ringdomstory' URL mentioned prior.]
We are finding partners who are willing to join us now. So I contact you through this patform. I'm sorry if I disturb you.
Please note, everything is typed in context.
Even if the site itself is legit, here are my reasons for why anyone who receives a message from these people should decline:
1: Sketchy poaching practices are no bueno.
2: If this is what constitutes as an editor, then hecking yikes.
3: On their site, monetary payment is referred to as a 'prize' based on story completion and per-day word count, with the lowest being $50 for 60000 minimum (I presume only one payment), and a the lowest being $50 for 40000 words in a month updating daily with two days being 'excused' if missed. Oh, and this is done by signing a contract, which to me implies losing some degree of control over the finished product at best. (All information gathered from the site, this is public.)
Even just the first one is enough for me to say no, all three together just really rubs me the wrong way.
