I'm a huge fan of melodic metalcore, post-hardcore, and.. "progressive metal" (I really wish djent was an official genre just to specify lol). But I can get down with electronicore, heavy metal, hardcore, death metal, emo.. and just a touch of black metal.

I find myself enjoying the extreme outpouring of emotions in the music ever since I was like.. 10. I heard Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory and Meteora and thought it was the best thing ever. Moved on to System of a Down, then Metallica, and then a friend introduced me to "A Boy Brushed In Red Living in Black and White" by Underoath and that's where I found out about "screamo" music and my life's been changed ever since lol

The intensity of emotion was the the wild nature of the musical performance along with dissonance of its overall melody and soundscape drew me in like crazy. I used to listen to nothing but metal back then, and found more and more music as I grew older. I became one of those metal elitists for a short while lol but I found a home with it, you know?

I dropped out of high school to make music like that, and I think I fared well enough. If I were to make a push to make my take on metal music an official thing, I think it'd make a decent amount of money off of it.

But that's not really what I'm looking for in life anymore, I don't wanna be chained down to just making my metal.. fusion, whatever genre it is. Matter of fact, I lost interest in it over the years. When you listen to so much of it, you can see how similar and uninventive the genre can be in certain communities. I keep up with my favorite bands but that's it. (I'm actually going to see August Burns Red for their 10 year anniversary tour of Constellations! Silverstein and Silent Planet are gonna be there too! I'm more excited to see Silent Planet than ABR tbh lol)

Other than that, I've moved on to other music I find emotive, but metal's definitely a special part of my life~

Thank for starting this thread, I'm nowhere near ready with the metal thread I told you about earlier.
So very good to have this one.

My relationship with metal is strong and weird. It's one of my favorite genres, pretty much the only non traditional or classical genre I like much, and I like it A LOT, but only very specific sides/subgenres.

Generally (with exceptiosn) , I'll like metal with at least two of the following characteristics:

  • Progressive (not necessarily with complex writing, but it has to have some complexity and/or novelty);

  • With contrast and diversity. Often works hand in hand with progressive metal but not always so I'll add it anyway;

  • With mixed vocals (I'm veeery partial to mixed vocals). And that's extra contrast;

  • With folk/traditional elements, but not if it's European/American folk (I may change my mind one day, but right now, nope). Mostly Middle-Eastern folk, also South-Western and Central Asia, South America;

  • Related to the previous entry: With instruments not generally used in metal;

  • Avant-garde aspects: just give me some weird stuff!

Very often, metal I like goes away from metal at times, sometimes for as long as a whole song. I do like metal as a dough in which every kind of ingredient can be added, and as it is in cooking, a skillful mix of very weird ingredients is difficult to get to work, but when it does, it's particularly interesting to eat.

Coming up I'm going to see Killswitch Engage and Parkway Drive. I'm stoked for that!

@charliesackett
Awesome! Thrash is one of my favorite subgenres. Power metal is awesome too! What is your band? Any of it on Spotify?

@J.Lovelace

Yeah, Melodic Heavy Metal is actually it's own subgenre...but there's tons of fantastic Prog Metal bands out there.

In short... I love just about every subgenre of metal, I'm a very easy to please Metalhead xD

We're called It Cometh. It's not on spotify yet, we're getting socan sorted at the moment. The EP drops later this month. Right now we've just got soundcloud teaser stuff

@vothnthorvaldson
You ever listen to Whispered? They have a Japanese classical music influence complete with Shamisen and everything. Their lyrics are based off of Japanese mythology. They are freaking insane.

@charliesackett
Dude. I love it. I hope everything works out for your EP, I'll definitely be listening more. I'm getting the Thrash influences, and some Alt Metal Groove in there too.

Thank you for the recommendation! I did find interesting aspects (and very happy to hear some flute! It's not the most evidently metal instrument but it often works very well in a metal context). I'm a bit perplex on this specific song though, the Japanese influence feels a bit too much like a gimmick versus a deeper, more meaningful influence, but I'll have to listen to more songs and look at the lyrics too. Overall, interesting new perspectives.

@vothnthorvaldson
Give their entire albums a listen, the aspect will become clearer, each album is a concept album.
Shogunate Macabre and Metsutan: Songs of the Void are masterpieces. Each song is unique but they all fit together perfectly.

Oh, I definitely love the whole range of emotions and their intensity.
I am mostly a fan of Neue Deutsche Harte, it settled down in my heart when I was 11 with the sound of Rammstein. Except of my German guys, I usually listen to original hard rock, new British wave, power, alternative, goth and pop metal. There are some songs from other subgenres, of course, but all these are like 90% of my rock/metal to listen to.
In any moment of my life, whether I am tired or happy, if someone is making me furious or is already dead, Disturbed is always there for me to ohohohahahaha my way through these times!
Also I've no idea about the metal situation nowadays, I'm quite a boring person with my music, stuck with most of the things I love for more then 15 years now and I rarely try to find something new =)

@Kelheor
NWOBHM is still alive and kicking! I suggest White Wizzard's latest album Infernal Overdrive. It picked up where Iron Maiden failed and created some amazingly progressive yet classic New Wave of British Metal tones.
Not to mention....Judas Priest, Saxon, and Tygers of Pan Tang, and even Raven have all released some bangers in the last few years.

I will as soon as I have enough time and concentration for a whole album! First listens are serious business for me :smile:

I forgot that in my message: I overwhelmingly prefer concept albums or at least albums with a thematic consistency, where each song/part shows its full value only in the context of the whole album. I totally can see how it could improve my experience to listen to this specific song in context.

Oh my, thanks! I'll check all of these right now!
The problem with new albums is that they are just not the same sometimes. Like, Disturbed came to Russia 2 years ago and I thought I'd die, but go to the concert, but they came with a new album and I didn't like that one at all! And now they come again, you guess, with a new album (again), which I didn't really like too (again!).
I am a devastated and desperate bun :sweat_smile:
Aaaand I'm off to listen to some new Judas Priest and everything nice, thank you very much~

@Kelheor the new Judas Priest will not disappoint. I saw them live last year and they melted my freaking face off.

Flower Field, my comic, is written with the sound of power and folk metal :v

Love the epicness, the distortions with classical/medieval instruments and the fantasy lyrics

My comic is also heavily influenced by bands like Dragonforce, Dark Moor, Hammerfall, Freedom Call and many other power metal groups.
You'll find I listen to all the metal. All of it!

Hell yeah. I can't get enough of overdriven guitars, although looking at the people I know irl I seem to be in the minority haha

I love Written By Wolves, Rev Theory, Adelitas Way, and Blue Stahli in particular :upside_down:, their riffs and lyrics are just what I live for.

Although... forgive me, but I usually can't handle songs with tons of belting in them... I'm not strong enough lmao

XD same most people I know look at me funny when the music is bleeding from my headphones. They can't handle it. I live for it loud, I'm one of those people.

Same, but like back then though lol you'd also hear me screaming the lyrics out in the hallways of my middle school and early in high school. I'd get all sorts of looks from people for doing it.. and rightfully so! What in the hell was I thinking??? It's like I was trying to prove something to everyone, like oooh look how metal and brutal I am!

Haha been there, done that. I save it for concerts now. Or with my few other metal buddies IRL

I've always been of the opinion that there are only two kinds of music - good and bad. I've played punk, funk, grunge, prog rock, medieval, Renaissance, classical, folk, and some straight-up metal from my teens up until life steamrolled me. Now I'm thinking I may get back into it, but I'm not sure how likely that will be, nor just how metal this forty five year old mom with chronic health problems can get that involves music rather than pins and screws in her bad hip.

Still, if I have my music on shuffle while in the car with the family, my husband sometimes complains about the New Age or Classical music putting him to sleep. I say nothing and let the music speak for itself when Disturbed or Drowning Pool comes on.

Music is a wonderful thing, and there are so many styles out there. I used to be a "METAL ONLY" guy, but I've since learned to like other styles and enjoy them just as much. That being said... I like metal because there is a deceptive amount of musical skill required to play it. Now...that only goes so far, cause some bands only use basic power chords...but still, there's an energy in the sound, other styles just don't do for me.

At a show...I'm not much of a mosher, but I try to be right up against the stage, banging my head as hard as I can. The pain the next day....worth it? I think so XD
