I faced her, trying to get something, some scent, and she shuddered, heart going faster, then started coughing.
“Mom I need- water-”
Her mother hurried off and the girl leaned forward grabbed my wrist.
“What are you?” she whispered, all trace of the cough gone. I had misunderstood the fear. I wasn't used to children, especially dying ones. She wasn't scared of talking, she was scared of me.
“I'm an exorcist for hire.”
“I can see them. Mom doesn't know, but they look almost like other people. And I can see... smoke coming off you. And that you're hungry. And if you try and eat me I'm going to kill you.”
I curled up my lip to snarl, black tar dripping down my back, then forced myself to calm down. She was a little kid, not an enemy. She was shaking in her little bunny slippers.
“Kid if I wanted you dead, you'd be dead. Think of it as me being qualified. At least you know I know I'm not a total fraud, right?”
Her heart fluttered. A little breath, ready to speak. Silence. The second her mother's footsteps were back in human hearing, she began to cough again and her mother rushed to her side, helping her take little sips of water.
