Have you ever noticed how often characters in movies and stories often have very Fictional Character names-- common things like Jackson, Smith, Lee, or Jones... but people you meet in real life often have very unusual last names?

There are database websites for names, like "Behind The Name", but they tend to deal in given names more than surnames. And while BTN has a surname section, it's far less extensive than it's given name selection. My last name isn't even listed, and it's not even particularly rare.

So while it is fairly easy to find good given names, I find it much harder to find less common, but believable surnames. So I though it'd help if we compiled a sort of list of last names available for people to look to when creating characters, and they don't want to use something common or obvious-- a list that anyone can use, and anyone can contribute to.
Does that sound like something anyone might find use in?

For example, let's say I need a new character, but I can't think of a good surname for her. I go to this list, and see Belsten on the list and decide that it works well for her and BAM. Done. The world is saved from another character necessarily named Jane Storm.
Jane Belsten. It doesn't sound as "heroic", but much more believable and less of an obvious fictional character name.

I'll wait and see if there is any interest before starting the list itself.

Let me know what you think.
And good luck naming!

the great thing is, the list has been made before! This site9 has taken a LOT of names (via the US census) and compiled them in a list, for male and female given names, as well as over 80,000 last names. you can use the random name generator to get a really unique name. Personally, if i find a name that has a ring to it, i will try and combine it with other names to get even more unique names.

hope this helped!

side note: you can adjust the results you get from the generator with the rarity option, lol

I don't have any specific surnames to contribute, but I do have a handy tip: watch the credits of movies and tv-shows. They list hundreds of people, all of whom have surnames - and sure, some of them are "Smith" and "Jones" and "Lee", but some of them are "Whittle" and "Kuznetsev"^ and "von Heiberk".

Seriously. I've gotten more useful names out of movie credits - and athletic competitors - than I have anywhere else.

^) Though "Kuznetsev" is basically the Russian equivalent of Smith, since it means blacksmith, but whatever.

Aw yeah! TV is a treasure trove for me, particularly international football/soccer matches, got the names right there on the screen and on the backs of their shirts.

Sometimes though if I'm lazy I'll just look up common last names in so-and-so regions on google and pick from there.

Yes EXACTLY! That's one of my favorite ways of finding new last names!

This list may be a good way of sharing some particularly good ones with the rest of Tapastic. Because some people may not know where to look, or don't have time to sift through hundreds of names for the right one. And sometimes you find a really good one, but don't really need it (but know that somebody else might).

Also, there may be some good ones that aren't in a movie or sports team. I know some people by the last name Bartholic, which sounds like an excellently normal "of European decent" name, if you ask me.

I name my characters at BOMB A from my Friends name. Joji my protagonist who is my "Crush". Aly "ofcourse" myself. Moran - my bestfriend Koma- my strict teacher somehow I like and hate haha. The antogonist's name came from the bible "The 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse from the book of Rebelation. (Black) "famine" (White) "pestilence" (Green) "Death , the last one is not yet introduced but of course it is obvious (Red) "WAR"
