Leaving this open for people to jump in, but I happen to work in marketing automation and I have to say that this email marketing strategy going on isn't doing anything for me.
The dilemma is this — I have no interest in receiving short form comics, and especially not every single day. But if I click "manage my subscription preferences", the only option is to opt out of email communications entirely, which raises the fear that I might miss out on legitimately important communications about the website.
So here are some ideas. I don't know what service Tapastic is using, but if you can, create multiple communication streams and allow users to opt in and out of different streams. This will reduce global unsubscribes and lead to happier members. Some ideas for streams:
- A monthly newsletter. Could highlight new additions to collections, upcoming changes to the website (like the forum UX/UI change), contests, surveys, etc.
- Daily short form pick of the day (current)
- Weekly highlights for different genres: comedy, fantasy/sci-fi/action, romance
Important announcements, such as website downtime and changes to the support program, could be sent in real-time to everyone who hasn't globally unsubscribed.
What do you guys think?
