Perfect Except For the Ending

Mass Effect, the original trilogy. What a horrible joke of an ending that was...
Oh wait, that's a videogame. If we're talking books, shows or movies... "Terror" by Dan Simmons. Didn't like the ending. He could make an undead Irishman fight a demonic polar bear, and he didn't. I know it was deliberate, but I was still disappointed.

Season one of Underverse. Ink's betrayal hit me like a freight train. I just wanted to throw my phone across the room. I'm talking yee-eet!
Season two of Glitchtale hit hard, too. At the end most of the characters you've grown attatched to are dead, including Alphys and Sans.
Glitchtale, unfortunately, doesn't seem to have the happy ending in its future I'm looking for, which is a shame because I really liked it! (I'm withholding judgement on Underverse for right now.) It's kinda what inspired me to create the Hopetale multiverse, where everything will eventually lead to the perfect happy ending.

Who Censored Roger Rabbit?
The fact that they changed it for the movie adaptation is telling to how awful it is. The twist in the movie is so much better.

I can see why the Burton version expanded on it. They just fly into the air and the film ends. No closure for any of the other characters.

the thing about the ending was that it undermined everything that was built up on the last season in the last moment......so, that ending could have worked if how i met your mother ended in the first season, but they didn't adapted it to the way the story and characters developed over the years.

Mulan (the original animated movie). I'm sorry, what? She finally found what she wanted! Respect, belonging, a place where she can be who she truly feels she is and ....SHE JUST GOES HOME!? The hell!?

An interesting point. On the other hand, she went to that war in place of her ill father to protect him, so it makes sense she would want to spend time with him after saving China......and after all she's done, the ancestors will have nothing to say against her anyway.

Also, for Mulan's parents honor was secondary.....knowing that their daughter could be killed in war or after being found out was a more serious matter for them.

Wonder Egg Priority, super interesting premise, lovely character design, the story started out incredible but the ending is.... so, so enraging,especially for the fact that we had to wait for the last episode and they threw literally a bunch of stuff on the prior episodes to end up being supper squashed together and then... then nothing, back to square one.

Then, Supernatural, of course, I love hating on it's ending because this series is so well made in the sense that you first start it by the premise, by the lore and current plots but later on you invest your attention in the characters, they all are super interesting and lovable even if the longer the seasons go they end up being parody of themselves or, if your fav is not one of the brothers (the protagonists) you can say goodbye to any piece of personality and just turn them into maidens in distress or just plain being there doing nothing and even depowered.

The thing that I've noticed that I hate about the ending of these two shows is that you get invested in these characters, you see them dealing with a lot of crap, fighting constantly and their resolution ends up being dumb, pathetic, some in total solitude and rejecting all of the motivations that originally driven them or they end up dying with a death so out of character, with no dignity at all, illogical and very frustrating.

It's not like Devilman that while the ending is not a happy one you still get a stable closure, if you make a story going around Tragedy, I believe, and this is my personal take, that you either have to go full rock bottom like, total loss for the protagonist, a sad moving ending, or a happy one where effort is recompensated, where all that pain can actually bring peace of mind. You can also have something in between that depending on your mood it may lean to one side or another, but something that is.... muted down, so... unemotive, where even the characters feel out of canon, like robots or just... plain ignoring the events that happened around them like 2 minutes ago, idk I hate it

Supernatural came to mind immediately. It really should have ended with season five and it would have gone out on a high note. But instead they dragged it out, ruined a lot of characters, and gave one of the leads a hilariously anticlimactic ending. And the other one just got some terrible old-age make up.

Naruto. The last arc was dragged out so much it actually got funny how they kept going "but actually this is the real bad guy".

Tim Fri Will lives rent free in my mind lmao. While I personally like a few things from the later seasons(Cas being a dad and Jack), I agree that the show should have ended in Season 5

Yeah, I always liked that characters actually died in the show. And then they ruined that, lol. Also, the whole reincarnation thing was not good.

@RedLenai There's definitely some things I liked from the other seasons, but also a lot I didn't. Like Chuck being a jerk in the end. Jack was okay, kinda liked him sometimes, but I wasn't really into that storyline. Still better than the season eight part with the dog, lol.

Spielberg's War of the Worlds

You know that's kinda the way the original H. G. Wells story ended, right? To Wells, it was not really deus ex machina because the science of the tale made it virtually inevitable. Every life form buys its right to exist on its world by suffering, dying and adapting to fit the planet. The Martians hadn't bought the right to live on Earth so they paid for their ignorance.

Game of Thrones went downhill way before the ending, arguably starting somewhere mid-season 5.

BNA -really needed a better ending or a second season for that ending
voltron legendary defender- so much build up and it just flops on its face hard(mind you the show was not perfect but had some really good parts)

The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. Very solid start, decent enough second and third book... and then the ending resolves everything on a really ridiculous bit of semantics that's kind of implicitly transphobic. BLEH.

Sanderson's early stuff really struggled with endings in general, just A Lot Happening Very Fast. I'm glad he mostly broke those habits by Way of Kings, which I think has one of my favorite endings ever, because Warbreaker and Elantris are also victims of the Sanderlanch.

My personal vote goes to the K-Drama 'Black'. It is SO MUCH BETTER if you just don't watch the last half hour. The back end of the final episode seems driven to beat by beat undermine the entire story.
