Thanks for that beta, the thing is someone dies in the first episode, and i intentionally did this because i knew my story would have a slow start. Thankfully i can brush these off because i know there are a lot of pepole who enjoy my work, but someone who was a smaller creator who didn't have any positive comments i could see comments like this stopping them all together.
My only "bad" comment wasn't the worst, not really insulting or very disrespectful, just... Unnecessary.
I had worked very hard on an episode and the only thing this person could muster up was "I must kill the students". To my teacher main character who was going through a rough time, is depressed, and most importantly would never EVER take it out on his students.
After a pretty lengthy response of how they should understand the context before making joke comments like it, they deleted the comment. lmaooo
I get a lot of bad ones simply because webtoons has a really loud yoooooung sudience, but my favorites are when they criticize the MC for having flaws and suggest they could do better. I dont want to screenshot any particular comment since the commenters are probably like 11, but its something along the lines of
"scarlet is such a bad grim reaper if i were the grim reaper i would just massacre everyone on the street and laugh as their blood pours down from the sky. i have a dark side irl and i keep a secret from my friends but i wasnt held back i could kill everyone but i keep it inside..."
Like, okay little jimmy, now grab your warm milk and run off to bed
@beta1042
I may have done that one or twice before realizing that authors/artists don't like it (and I understand why), and I'd like to add something: as a reader, it's extremely difficult to know if it's going to be taken as an insult or a compliment, depending on how conscious and true the similarities are.
Let's see what can happen with a comment that was neutral in the intent.
Not conscious, not true: Mildly insulting. You may think the reader think you have no imagination.
Conscious, true: Compliment! The reader got your reference/homage. If it was quite hidden, it's even something to gloat about!
Not conscious, true: Two possibilities, here, depending on artist/writer and context:
- Very insulting. you realize you actually may have been too inspired by something, that was not your intention. The reader's comment is true, it's very hurtful. It may even make you rethink your story entirely, because it undermines the whole credibility and originality of your work.
- Rather positive: Your readers make you realize things about your work. You are now more aware of some of your influences.
I'm not sure I've got bad comments or not. It sound confusing, right?
So the thing is I like to answer to comments, but sometimes I get comments what contain words I don't understand(google also can't help me with them), I replay them anyway with a "Thank you!". And I noticed sometimes the original comments of these examples vanish... Sooo... I suspect some of them were something mean, and the owners regretted it when they got an answer... Or maybe not.
It is just a speculation, but it happened a couple of times.
Oh! Now I realized I got one, but that also turned into not that bad. Someone said:
"Those outlines are bad!"
And I responded:
"Sorry if you don't like them, I use outline because my characters are in a very dark area and outline helps to make them more visible."
And he responded:
"I didn't say I don't like them, I just never seen outline is used like this before."
Sooo.... I think this case is a bit similar to those cases I mentioned first. For me it seems he regretted his first state.
I think the worst comments I get are ones that I just don't understand lol. Usually they're jokes that go over my head, referencing memes or something that I don't know. :'I
although I did get a comment that bothered me once, insisting that it looked like something inappropriate/sexual was going on in one of the panels. I could have laughed it off if the characters weren't a mother and son. I had to run to get reassurance from my partner that the comment was baseless haha;;
Also have gotten a couple comments on my characters' appearances that I didn't really care for, but nothing major.
I cant remember any bad comment in my comics and it’s been a long time since i posted a proper comic in Tapas. But I remember someone on twitter mentioned my username said, “god this artist has such a same-face syndrome in their art.”
Lmao...Tbf, I’m not good with faces. I try to give them different expressions and features. I always thought the way I drew faces wasn’t a big deal in the same way that Ghibli’s main characters have that same facial style but are still different characters. Not that my work is on the same caliber as Ghibli... but I didn’t think my art had the worst case of “same-face.” Oh well. I’ll try to be better LOL.
Wow, people can be that rude... I'm really glad that I have nothing actually bad to write in this thread!
The worst comment Hexameron got was on the last page, when we didn't wrote the translation for the message written in German, which was done intentionally (fyi: I'm not German).
I understand that the subscriber didn't mean anything bad and he previously only complimented our work, and it was a cute smile even with this comment! But this made me cringe a little.
"eeerrrrr?? translation please, of the last panel, some of us are not so privileged to understand most European languages -- so, pls give a detailed interpretation, thanks"
Well, in my country most people are not privileged to understand English. It would be okay if he would just write that he doesn't understand and ask for a translation, I would willingly write it or maybe something like "ooooh, I wonder what's written there".
Anyway, I'm glad that I have nothing to be offended by after all the things you guys put in this thread, I would probably crawl to my bed and won't make anything for a year after some of these comments.
I actually don't care if the comparison is similar. most comparisons have been characters I don't know, so when I get one of these comments I look it up. If the characters do have similar designs or personalities or something, I'm like "Oh. Yeah they are pretty similar" and think nothing more of it.
What annoys me is the comparisons where the characters are really not similar at all. Like I just can't see anything. I have a character with neon green hair, and so she gets compared to every green haired character ever, even if it's different hair styles, diff shades of green, skin tones, etc etc. And it's just like... come on give me a real comparison if you're gonna do this XD.
I myself gotten bad comments pretty often, especially when I was posting in webtoon Indonesia in the first half of 2016.
They range from short idiotic comments to longer idiotic comments and many of them were baseless opinions/critics
Most people who hated my comic didn't like that I wasn't drawing at all and used this instead https://store.steampowered.com/app/262490/Manga_Maker_Comipo/25
(which isn't against the rules)
At first I've had a troll who spammed all my chapters with rude comments, in most of them he called my comic "trash", in others he said the application I was using was "trashy" and he often got replies from my fans and was told that if he should stop commenting and if he doesn't like my series he shouldn't read it then he replied them back calling them stupid for liking my comic.
Every time I updated my series he came back at me to hate and I couldn't do anything to stop him from commenting, there were no "delete" or "block" buttons.
As time went by I got other haters too, who didn't comment that much as him. They were also hating on the application,
they were like If you really want to make a comic, draw by yourself, don't use that software
Any comic that's not handrawn is trash, Admit it!
This is not allowed on webtoon, webtoon is for drawings
Why are you using comipo??
This is Webtoon not Comipotoon!
If you want to tell a story, better go to wattpad
that's lazy!
Webtoon is for comic creators not for comic editors moron!
this is trash!
This comic is a crap that should go down the toilet.
Why hate comipo? I'll tell you why, I'm an author I draw by myself, I do the story by myself, comipo is just lazy and it's for those who are lazy and don't want to draw and has graphics like video games have, so guys stop reading comipo comics and read only those that are handrawn. (this one was from a possible liar, I couldn't find their comic)
"Can't draw? write a book"
I do more appreciate a terrible drawn done by the author himself than something looking nice that isn't the author's work
I'll report this
This is disrespectful to the authors who draw by themselves
The fanarts look better than the comic because they are drawn. (yeah I got fanarts.)
art like this isn't allowed on webtoon!
People often complained about the application/software I was using and even assumed I was breaking the rules of webtoon and the copyrights when that was not true at all, although the 3d characters weren't mine neither the backgrounds, I had the right to use them also webtoon never said "don't post comics that aren't drawn" or "our place is for handrawn comics only".
Luckily I don´t get many bad comments.
I think the thing that irked me most at the start of my comic was that everyone compared it to avatar. I haven´t even seen avatar xD. That was probably the only Story with elements many people know? I´d thought it was such a common plot point, it´s like using elves in your story. Common ground.
Well, they´ve died down. Turns out JUNE tells a different story - I think? I still haven´t seen avatar. I only knew about it bc of fanart I´d seen on DA haha.
@Rizzvatt sorry to hear about all those mean comments you have gotten It´s not like you pretended they were your drawings, or didn´t do research on if you´re allowed to post it. I´m sure there goes a considerable amount into plotting, and posing the characters, as well as typesetting and speech bubbles. I don´t think many Webtoon readers understand a lot about the comic creation process in all it´s glory.
Context this person got banned on a comic server I was on. They tend to have a habit saying all work sucks except theirs. I asked them for a critique when they told me it looked bad and regret it cause I have no idea what they wrote.
I can't hate this one. I would name my character a transformer if I could.
️Yeesh. This one and @JackSherwin's guy just seem like they're desperate to make it look like they know what they're talking about, but CGI? Really? They've probably never heard of sketchup or blender.
Fortunately I'm not popular enough to get many bad comments (most have been pretty nice and supportive), but there was a while ago (during the webtoon contest) that someone just started criticizing my art style and saying it's not worth getting featured
