I was reading this manga called Helvetica Standard, which is sorta set in the world of Nichijou (Another manga that has a really good anime adaptation) but is extremely random & weird. And that me into thinking, can a webcomic that's random & weird with little or no continuity work?

Why not? It's a similar idea to Helvetica Standard, just a different medium.

As someone who writes two comics that mainly revolve around being random and weird, I can confidently say that no, it does not work.

Pfft Whatever, the random and weird is what I love about your comics.

Yes random and weird can work, but it may not be the most popular thing, but there are definitely people who will like it.

Made two comics that were experimental/weird/surreal - got no to little audience
Made a story based comic with a kind've mainstream plot - immediately got an audience

Yeah it's a shot in the dark type thing, the less plot, the less audience it gets. I mean it can work on its own but expecting a following is hard...

That's kinda something I'm worried about. I've been planning a fantasy adventure comic, but keep finding myself not wanting to work on it because I'm concerned that it will pick up a following easily and make all the work I've put into my other comics seem like a waste of time.

And before someone comes in with "oh, the size of your audience doesn't matter as much as doing what's important to you." It does mater, comics don't exist for the creator, they exist for the audience.

I'm glad someone can say it out loud. But I think more you create, the better is the stuff you make.

I imagine it would do the opposite. Having a series that is more popular will lure more people in general to check you out as an author/artist and result in more people discovering your other works who wouldn't have necessarily found it before.

Nichijou is a perfect example of a series that does this kind of thing well.
Nichijou may not have a running plot or continuity, but it pulls the audience in with great characters and a twisted sense of humor. (oh and kick-ass animation for a slice-of-life genre)

On the other hand, it may not be as "popular" as other animes with romances or an actual plot because of these reasons.

But Nichijou is an undiscovered gem in the anime/manga industry. It doesn't really matter what the content of your comic is (well ok as long as it isn't extremely problematic), but the way you present your idea.

you've just describe 99% of comedy webcomics right there

Is all about execution. If you can make the randomness and weirdness hillarious and endearing, you will catch people´s attention in a good way.

You don`t need continuity if you are making sketches, but establishing some recurring characters may help the audience to be more invested.

Surreal humor is an interesting way to entertain. Remember, humor is all about playing with expectations and comedic timing. How you escalate or deescalate the weirdness may depend of the joke.
