Help! Due to the limited search functions of this site, I've only found a couple authors to follow so far.
My list of favorite genres and tropes is listed below. If you share similar interests, do mention it! I sometimes feel like I must be the odd one out when I can't find enough to read.
Anyway, I'm hoping to find more books to binge on, since I can finish a novella a day and still have time to make progress on my own work.... They say "If you can't find it, write it!" ... as if it was that simple. Hah! I'm doing my best to learn the necessary skills. (See below.)
= CoT Edited chapters shared here each Friday. |
= WIP Not on Tapas
In the meantime I hope you will help me find new novels to read! (I do read comics, but it's complicated by a need to also appreciate the art style.)
1) LGBT+ Accepting Society

While I don't mind books where people fight for the right to be themselves and love without gender bias, it's always especially warming when society doesn't create that kind of conflict in the first place. It's even better when each partner creates space for strong friendships, family, community, life goals, etc. Bonus points for the social acceptance of healthy, respectful polyamory (not power/sex-based harems).
Note: I enjoy some BL, but dislike stories that focus on graphic sex or dominance. I prefer slowly developing relationships between equals. I also appreciate it when the romance is merely a background to the real story.
2) Conscious Personal Growth

I find that cultivation and game-lit novels tend to have more of this quality, though there's a sad split in the common genre preferences toward either conscious development of skills and physical strength OR development of healthy social connections and strength of character.
Note: I merely tolerate the concept of fighting/battles as the best way to quantify strength, and I despise racial/gender-based superiority complexes. The best stories develop when both the protagonist and antagonist are relatable and develop in light of their specific world views.
3) Magical Skills

While this can include psi powers, advanced technology, or spiritual cultivation, the quality that matters to me is that there is a real skill, method, or technique to the system. It's more fun when superpowers mesh with reality in a way that makes sense within the social structure and "science" of the book universe. I can suspend disbelief, but there must be an internal logic that supports how events play out beyond "this needs to be possible or I can't write the next scene!"
Note: If the "Hand of God" miraculously steps in to solve the problem at the last minute, then that god had best be a character/element in the story from the beginning.
4) Complex Problems
This has to do with world view and the blinders of belief and expectations. While the external dilemma in a story may appear to be very clear from a less nuanced perspective, I enjoy it when the conflict is eventually solved with additional information, a shift in perspective, inner growth, or a wider understanding of the world. I enjoy stories that highlight how different people experience the same element of life in very different ways. However, "I'm just not going to talk to/be honest with you!" shouldn't be the sole cause of the problem. (That gets old fast.)
Note: Please point out books with more nuanced problem solving and characters, even if they don't match with the rest of this list!
I could go on, but I think a longer list would become too complicated.
Do you follow/write novels on Tapas that you think I'd enjoy? Please do share a link!
I don't mind self promotion as long as you sincerely believe your novel will match my interests and you've already posted at least one complete arc.
Note: I'm not the patient type. No matter how much I love your writing, I prefer to read entire arcs in one go. Maybe it's because I read super fast, but ...
I will bookmark anything interesting and hope I remember to stop by next year?... (I say this even as I'm posting updates weekly.
I'm happy there are people who enjoy reading at a slower pace.
And the CoT novel IS complete. I'm just editing it on the side of my "real" project.)
