The actually like drawing backgrounds, and only do BG-less panels if I don't have time/need to. But the characters do tend to take up the majority of the panel space (which I just noticed looking back), so that might be something to work on.
The J-Man series, a sci-fi superhero comic, takes place in NYC and the outside tends to be grainy places like alleys and sewers, but the current storyline takes place in the fictional Empire Labs, so everything is clean and chrome-like, mostly blues and purples. Below is from Book 4 Page 17, showing both the Cem Lab B (which J-Man is trapped in) and the Security Center.
This is page 2 of the 'Movie Night" short, which shows both the M.E.A. Movie Theater and a warehouse by the docks where the Star Gang is meeting.

My other series, The Valve, is more fantasy meets MIB, with a secret organization called the Officers of Light supervising supernatural threats in Seattle with the title superheroine. This is the last page of Book 2, which shows them leaving the sewers into the city at sunset, which is one of my favorites.
This is the third page of Book 3, which takes place in the Officers of Light HQ, underneath Seattle. This is probably the biggest glamour shot of a background I've made. The HQ is meant to mix Renaissance with modern architecture, and have this heavenly glow. The place is stuffed with imagery of Eris, the original Valve form the 1500's, seen in the stain-glass window.
