10 May, 1988. I was in high school and had just finished writing a math test. As always, I started doodling on the back of it while waiting for class to end. The previous night I had watched a nature show about sharks and it said that they have to keep moving in order to breathe. I thought "That would suck", and so I drew a comic with two fish talking about a shark who was swimming by but asleep. That shark was named Sam, and he was my first original character. My math teacher loved the comic and encouraged me to keep drawing. Sam the Shark ended up being published weekly in the school newspaper.
Here is Sam. This is a later version of the first comic that he was ever in, the one drawn on that math test. I drew this on my trusty 286 computer with ZSoft Paintbrush (a very primitive precursor to Microsoft Paintbrush). Sadly, I do not have the original pencil/pen version:

Here's a similar era Sam comic but drawn in pen. My God, how I loved those Uni-Ball medium point ballpoints!
