The rating system on Webtoon (They said there will be changes. What changes do you like to see about the rating system?)

i'm not currently publishing on webtoons but personally i would like to see the rating system completely removed by the time i do

in theory/concept it's supposed to be a way for readers to rate a comic overall based on how much they like it but the reality is that people have used to to more aggressively boost their faves while also actively rate bombing other series by giving them tons of one star reviews. it's led to a really skewed system that disfavors specific groups of folks so if they really want to "improve" it i think they should just do away with it completely. i think it's unlikely that will happen but a person can dream.

Don't count the rating from those users who didn't read at least half of all the chapters.

I'd also like to see it completely removed, especially on the CANVAS side. Otherwise, make it so you have to have read a higher number of episodes before it will allow you to rate a comic.

IDK. They could change it to be like YouTube videos: thumbs up or down, as well as the ability to turn it off.

I'd like to see it removed, i got abuse to 6, i didn't even do anything.. yet, and just a bit of ppl read my webtoon.. I'm not even a hidden gems I'm a lost fish.. o_o it's frustrating.

I don't think they will get rid of rating, but I hope they will put some thought in remaking it. One 1​ shouldn't cost ten 10​, this is ridiculous and incredibly damaging.
Although there's basically no reason for rating on Canvas, if the comic is popular, they can see it by the numbers of subs, likes and all that

No rating system would be good. All it does is creates an unnecessary competitive atmosphere, discouragement and hostility. Even if they get rid of the ability to rating bomb creators (Which people do to keep their favorite comics at the top.) it will still be misused, that's kind of the nature of having such a system. Although abolishing the rating system will never happen, so I guess the only thing I could think of is if someone gives a 1-3 star rating it should be mandatory for them to give feedback, at least a paragraph so they don't just say "It sucks" or something. That will somewhat discourage general misuse of the system.

I'd also be glad to see them getting rid of the rating system altogether. It hurts smaller creators, since it takes just one or two trolls to lower your rating from 10 stars to 4, and it hardly works as "constructive criticism", since there are no reviews attached to it. Some potential solutions could be:

-Make it so that people have to leave a review (that must contain a certain number of characters) to justify their rating, no matter what it is. This would discourage some of the trolls, since their name would be attached to the rating and they'd have to actually sit down and write something (granted, some might still write a review full of insults, but then you'd have all the right to report them).
-Or maybe... just make ratings NOT anonymous. You'd be surprised to know how many people suddenly lack the courage to act like little shits when their name is going to be attached to their actions
-Replace stars with likes and dislikes, as @gabrielabalagna suggested. Then add numbers to give an indication of how many people liked and/or disliked the comic. That way, if ten people like your work and only two dislike it, it'd be clear what the majority of readers think of your work.
-...And yes, for the love of God, let people choose whether they want their work to be rated or not.

Agree with everyone above! I used to be obsessed with how good or bad my rating was when I first started, but the system really isn't accurate. The ratings can really screw with any chances of getting readers, especially if it's unfairly low.

I really do like @Llyrel 's idea of reviews, I love hearing constructive criticism about what I could fix, and having reviews could help a lot. Maybe something like Yelp(?) would be nice.

they should just yeet the rating system. it's easily abused and it's not like editors take them into account. there's not even like a proper algorithm that looks at the ratings, so there's no point in having it.
right before i started my comic, i deleted the rating system number using ublock origin so i don't have to see it on desktop anymore

No one even believes the ratings that they get anyway--like if I were to suddenly get a rating bomb by a ton of people at once...I wouldn't think "wow my comic must suck" I would immediately decide "cool, I got the rating bomb everyone else seems to also get" So this system is like...freakin pointless. We lost trust in it, so we should just get rid of it.

At the very least both votes should count as one, rather than negative votes destroying any stories.

If had I it my way I would redo the complete system. Remove rating and only have a 'like' option.

I'm not encouraging the other extreme of no negativity ever allowed. But the 'like' system would still be a rating system in itself.

The more likes the better the rating, if you see a comic with a thousand likes and only twenty chapters, you know it's a high quality one. And vice versa. A webtoon with a hundred chapters with only ten likes isn't a good ratio.

As for reviewer, like Amazon, you can have verified reviewers who review things based on a more neutral stance.
E.g. A reader that review things based on genuine story writing/art composition etc. and have read at least 3 - 5 chapters to make a review.

These would be chosen through the same way Amazon chooses their reviewers. ( A standard needs to be met).

Would avoid the whole bomb rating.... some one posted my webtoon link on reddit and I got bombed despite not uploading anything)

I agree that a Likes system would be better - just display how many people pressed the Likes or something. The current star rating system tells me nothing as it's all over the place (not to mention as @Kelheor said, a single 1 star has more influence to the overall rating than a single 10 star)
