The sad stories

Hey everyone I am new to tapas but have been a comic artist (non professional) for quite a few years. I have always had a a strange interest in the more sad stories either in comics or novels. I like stories of triumph over adversity, survival in all situations and sometimes a sad, romantic, drama. My own comic is also very sad as you can see, and inspired by some true events... so I wonder if anyone would like to share their comics/stories if you believe them to be sad. I'd love to read some more myself and possibly we can work and learn together to create our sad but hopefully inspiring and enjoyable stories.

Ah I'm also a fan of bittersweet stories, so I get what you mean!

If you're interested, I have a few series that lean more towards that feeling.

Genre: Historical Romance, Fantasy
Follow Empress Wu Zetian's treacherous journey from the hands of enemy Tufan soldiers back to the Forbidden City where she battles foes from within her own kingdom.

Genre: Scifi, Action, Thriller
A short story collection that involves science fiction, fast-paced action scenes, and dystopic universes. (This is more gritty than sad, but involves survival and a lot of adversity. )

Genre: Drama, Mystery, Psychological Thriller
Unravel the secrets hidden in a small town through the eyes of a singer, a policeman, and a school counselor. Suspects in the subsequent murders range from cyber stalkers to old flames!
(A lot of realistic drama in this one!)

Thanks for making this topic. My comic Cup and Quill is about people trying to pursue romance and their own personal happiness in the face of adversity. While it may have cute animal characters and a bright color pallet this comic gets very serious. Characters deal with depression, anxiety, deaths of loved ones, discrimination, self hatred and crushing loneliness. But there are also bright lighthearted moments sprinkled in.

My comic is a short newspaper-style comicstrip of usually only 4 panels, but it is more introspective than humorous as the main character deals with depression.

Sad? I wonder if my novel qualifies. Since especially initially its mostly melcholic at first due to 1st main lead. Its more just gets darker with a people getting the shorter end of the stick.

Bittersweet / stories of triumph are definitely really interesting! I tend to lean towards them myself.

I tend to gravitate towards melancholic stories too, @AkaAllanah

I'm writing a slightly angsty BL-novel with a lot of feels. It's set in the world of classical music .

There's definitely a decent amount of sadness in my novel, particularly focusing around themes of loss for most of the characters. Being a post-apocalyptic fantasy there's a decent amount of that going around...

My novel Jade Kingdoms fits the bill alright. The hurt of domestic violence, and a main character that struggles in her own hurt and grief yet works to find strength that doesn't outdo her soft demenour. Emotional and generational trauma are it's main themes, so watch for the melancholy a bit.

You like sad stories eh? Mine is very sad. It is about a boy called Jung who struggles to fit in society because he daydreams too much. Lots about depression, melancholy, addiction, and the feelings of loss.

My comic is definitely bittersweet. It takes place on an island that was once populated by dragons but is now overrun by giant flies, and the protagonist is a girl growing up in the aftermath of the human folly that destroyed the island's ecosystem. She finds joy in how her world is now, but her life is pretty sad from an outside perspective. I try to keep a good balance of sad environmentalism preaching and cute "little girl has animal sidekick and a big imagination", so it's not, like, bleak, but it isn't a simple happy story either.

If you like some crime/noir vibes coupled to characters with a deep background, i think you might like it.

oh boy, this fits Stains. Casper is miserable and full of self-loathing, and it pervades all of his perception. And he really has an awful life that he makes worse by his own poor choices. Cain, also, as the story goes on has an even bigger weight of tragedy behind him than Casper, although the question mainly circles whether that's all real.

Sad huh? Well in my story the world ended already, so that's not great. And all the characters are traumatized from events before during and after the apocalypse, so that's pretty sad. And they can't even fins much solace in each other because their personalities and coping mechanisms fundamentally clash. Is that sad enough?

I have some comics in my reading list that are bittersweet and tragedies.

Both of Sketchylinez comics.

I also have a heavier comic, although how sad the story is is subjective, it depends on your knowledge of mental health stuff, abuse and how empathetic you are to those things. The gist is a mentally ill character living in a bad domestic situation, surrounded by shitty people, with one of them being an ex-friend who tries to "help" but is an ignorant moron. It's not a total tragedy because the ending will be nice (Not perfect "happily ever after", but nice.), but most of the comic is going to be bleak.

Don't read this if you're under the age of 17, and are sensitive to mental health, trauma, abuse, blood, violence, mild body horror, mild self-harm, queerphobia/bigotry, profanity and substance abuse.
