Toilet bound Hanako kun (Jibaku Shonen Hanako-Kun):broken_heart:
And
Eden
Tbhk made me cry :sob:

You have no idea how happy this makes me to see someone else mention Stellvia! :sob: It's one of my all-time faves. I've never seen anyone else ever mention it. The only reason I knew what it was is because back in the day, my mom would get me Newtype USA and there was an article for it. (For awhile I thought the anime was called "An Empty Jar Of Rock Candy" because of the article title. Lazy 5th grade reading from me lmao.) Also, the group that did the op - Angela - is amazing.

My picks for underrated animes would be:

  • Galaxy Angel
  • Crest of the Stars
  • .hack//Sign (used to be pretty popular)
  • Sola
  • Aria the Animation
  • Full Metal Panic (also used to be pretty popular)
  • Air (the other Key works always eclipse it but Air is my fave)

Some more
Best D&D anime (probably not underrated)

Was the biggest thing then forgotten.

Mind Game
(not exactly underrated but usually ignored) Its actually one of the greatest films ever made about life.

Utena movie (Redline was totally showing a nod to this film)

And my all time favourite. Tenshi no Tomago

And video girl AI

People used to talk about it all the time when I was in high school. I guess it's sort of an old otaku thing now.

Scissor Seven is good. It's popular in China but not anywhere else. I don't want an argument saying it's not anime because it's Chinese.

Yes! It's one of my top 5 favourites too! I'm so bummed they cancelled the planned sequel! :cry_02: That opening song has never left my old iPod. It's such a great tune for getting pumped up! The combination of slice of life shoujo drama with actually surprisingly hard sci-fi (like it's not The Martian, but it definitely pushes into more realistic depictions of space tech than people might expect from something so cute looking) I think some people just can't connect with, but a few people see it and go "well this is 100% my jam" :sweat_02:

Mononoke - Cautionary tales with a yokai / spiritual twist. Sumptuous art and a feast for the eyes.

Mushi-shi - Dream like vibe with stories of the wonders of nature and its danger via entities called mushi. Perfect for chill watching or bed time vibes.

So many good animes in this topic. I especially agree for Mononoke, Mushishi (oh Ginko my love), Trigun, Lodoss and .hack//Sign (kinda disturbing but in a good way).

I'd like to add Ghost Hunt and Majutsushi Orphen (only the 1998 version, the new one is hideous).

Roujin Z

Please save my earth (the ending suuuuuuuucks though)

Chei the Brat

Heidi-Girl of the Alps (kind of forgotten Miyazaki)

Hakkenden (My Mum liked this one)

Anything Takashi Nakamura (tree of palme)
like...
Catnapped!

&
Shashinkan

&
Robot Carnival

Leading me to Gainax
Otaku no video

And another oldie Venus Wars

Just remembered these, so here's some more recent underrated anime. Also yes to Trigun and Wolf's Rain.

No. 6, based on the light novel of the same name and a pretty good sci-fi anime.

I'm recommending the first season of Darker Than Black because the second was kinda meh. Really cool anime with solid action scenes.

Still mad they didn't finish this one, tbh.

This one's short and kinda weird and you might be lost if you don't watch the OVA that gives more context/backstory first. But, I loved the cases they worked and the little detail that gives away the twist at the end that's hidden in the ED.

Another short one, but this one was really good and I loved the music(composed by Yoko Kanno) and the animation is top notch.

Thanks man, I completely forgot about Orphen, now I want to watch it... I love Orphen; he is a cool character

Sadly, it’s not available on DVD in the U.S. but I think you can find it on Crunchyroll. The first season at least. Season 2 is just completely unavailable.

An extremely underrated cult masterpiece. Tatami Galaxy is a masterpiece of animation and storytelling.

And then there's One Outs that nailed the cunning protagonist trope before it was cool. Also very underrated.

I KNEW I FORGOT SOMETHING. Escaflowne made such a strong impression on me, it's one of the few isekai I consider to be reeeaaaally good. I watched a little bit of Kodocha, it was quite something as well.
