It's underrated in the sense that people rate it as terrible whereas it's just meh. It's rated as worse than it is, therefore underrated :stuck_out_tongue:

I do not know if this counts because it was very popular in Japan, it's just no one outside of Japan knows what it is even tho there was an official English dub.

Deko Boko Friends

Fairy Musketeers (otogi juushi akazikin)
It's a charming shoujo anime about a badass red riding hood and a talking wolf. What's not to love?

Oh yeah, anyone ever heard of the OVA Dragon's Heaven? Story's kinda basic but boy is that aesthetic beautiful.

(Kenny Lauderdale is a goldmine for discovering these types of unique under the radar animes.)

@aqua03 ♪ GA-TCHA-MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN ♪ It's so hype.

@vapidink Blame Kurumada's inferiority complex. He can't stand people adapting his work being better than him. Most rumors indicate he turned fast against Lost Canvas when it started to get popular. Or removing the director from Sanctuary, who was the best director SS ever had.

@toonben Astra is such an amazing show

@simplykit I don't know if I would call Escaflowne an underrated anime. I mean, it's really, really big. It was huge in Japan. Maaya Sakamoto's blasted off into Seiyuu godhood with this one. And this goes double for Shin-Chan, that basically is a Japanese institution at this point.

Oooh I member this from my vhs trading days.
We had to make up the story as we had no transcript/subs.
The creators were very much inspired by Mobius visually.

Yeah. I've recently been studying Moebius and Moebius adjacent art for my own works and I really dig how it looks in motion.

Also fun fact: Moebius and Miyazaki were such good friends that Moebius named his daughter Nausicaa after the Miyazaki film.

Check out Time Masters if you haven't (not anime but used to get mistaken for it years ago). Mobius worked on it.

Oh, nice. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll definitely have to give it a shot when I have the chance.

Honestly it's kind of interesting just how much overlap their tends to be between France and Japan in the animation space it seems.

cool. good for escaflowne. it just didnt make a big bang when i watched it

shin chan is that big? damn, i never knew. well more power to them

Shin-Chan had crossovers with multiple series, like Kamen Rider and it has been running since 1992 in Japan. I'm barely older than Shin-Chan.

wh-what!? kamen rider!? damn! thats badass dude!

then i retract my statement. shin in definetly not underrated... well not in japan but maybe in other countries?

In Latin-America it got a good following because it was broadcasted here. There are many animes that reached Latin America and got big because the Mexican Dubbing rarely censored anything, so stuff like Saint Seiya arrived as it should, rather than almost completely destroyed by being "Adapted for western audiences"

Acchi Kocchi. I think it was one of the first animes I ever watched. It was nice and the pacing was quite relaxed. I still read the manga.

Gleipnir is one of my favorites and it's an extremely underrated anime!! No one's really made any videos about this show cuz in 2020 when it came out, all the big anime YouTubers reviewed it as one of many seasonal anime and only talked about the first two episodes, so all they could really say is "this show is really weird"

It's kinda impossible to recommend to be people because, well... it's kinda fetish-y and the art can evoke some uncomfortable feelings. I know that sounds like I'm not selling this thing very well, but I literally can't talk about it and not bring it up since it's like the thing the main characters do all the time

Some people take one look at it and go "Oh, that's that furry vore manga" and like... I can't say anything cuz they aren't wrong, but that's really not all it is, but if I go "No! You don't understand! It's actually really deep and symbolic because-" they literally won't care cuz it still looks really sus.

If this show's weirdness doesn't bother you at all, or maybe you even think the weirdness is charming, then I fully recommend this series cuz I think it'll be well worth your time
