What do your characters sound like?

What or who do you imagine your characters to sound like?

My comic Sundaze has a lot to do with music so I had thought up a voice for my characters while I was writing. Of course the audience is free to leave it to their creativity while reading but these are my own preferences.

Also, I plan to maybe someday make a drama CD for Sundaze and if I could choose anyone to voice then it would be...

for Dahlia I though of Celia Pavey with a bit of Josphine from Oh wonder. I envisioned Dahlia's voice to be sound calm and wispy sort of like trees with a strong gust of wind. The fact that Celia Pavey also looks like Dahlia just makes me more sure of my answer. Her type of songs would also suit the vibe of my comic too.

With Lori I'm not so sure but a mix of Norah Jones and Lana dey Rey. A naturally low, mysterious, raspy voice.

So what about your characters? You could give the general idea or an example of what they sound.

Never planned to do a drama CD like no, though. It looks pretty hard to to do, to find all the people who have voices like what you think about!

So, here are the characters I came up for my story:

Echo has a mind voice (she's mute). You know, the little voice you hear in your head when you think. I don't know if she's aware about it, but that's what telepaths hear. Her voice is quite calm with a soft tone, and clear.

Hrodland got a d4rk emo voice but what do you want, he's this type of dude. (you know, something like Takahiro Sakurai but in one or two tones lower) He talks sharply, and despise the fact he doesn't like to talk, he uses long, long sentences in the comic right now. It's a real effort for him

Abel has a voice near Troy Baker, I think. Something like this. Maybe a little bit deeper. He got a calm voice he's sometimes trying to control, depending who he talks to. He ca turn really agressive if you attack him.

Osmund has a higher voice than the other dudes. You don't hear a girl, but he definitelly doesn't have the deep voice of the darkness that you could imagine. I don't have any voice actors in my mind right now for an example.

And Marsile got the voice of your italian mafioso cliché. A deep voice that makes you remember "yeah, he's the king". he appeared only on one page but yeah, that's what would be perfect for him.

Interesting question, actually thought on this lately for The Sisters. From left-most to right: Erin, Beatrice (job/nightwear), Jam, Scott, Connor, Sammy, Craig, Handsome Dan, PB, K.C., Conrad.

I sort of hear Erin as sounding like April Winchell in her normal speaking voice, like back when she was doing her podcast. Sort of calm, rational, and collected; but only because if she isn't holding it all in it'd be a complete mess. All contained, all measured, and a bit rough and masculine as befitting her.

For Beatrice, I like Katie Aselton. Her voice, her natural voice, has this sort of falseness to it. Like there's a hollow sing-songy quality, like she's hiding something and she's just putting on a big face. Maybe mix in a bit of the roughness of Michaela Dietz or when Aselton starts to lose her voice.

Jam's always sounded like a chav that somehow ended up in Boston to me. Energy but not energy that wants to be expended, sarcastic but only because she knows it bugs you, vulgar for the sake of vulgarity. Not a butch voice, or one that's too girly. Sort of a Helga G. Pataki kind of voice, riddled with confidence and a sense of self that most people twice her age would give their left nut to have.

I like Scott as a Donal Logue type, during his earlier years. Kind of tired, knowing, maybe a slight caustic frustration that seeps in but ultimately someone whose just been dealing with crap for years and has made his bed in it because that's life. The kind of voice that can teach math, talk theory, and that would belong to a guy you'd assume to be a dad by this point in life.

Connor would sound sort of like Walton Goggins doing a slightly deeper voice. No accent, just a sort of confidence and knowing voice. Someone who is having fun with what he's doing.

Sammy is hard to place. Take a metal head from high school, the one who is fat and has long hair and lacks a lot of self-worth, and that's sort of how he'd sound. Easily excited about things going on that are worthy of excitement, but really kind of fed up with brother Craig.

Craig is Zak Bagans. That's the whole of his character. Maybe throw a bit more dude-bro in there is at all possible. Push that dude-bro to the point that the hyphen in dude-bro is gone forever.

Handsome Dan would sound like Michael Raymond-James, if he thought he sounded like Colin Donnell. With some David Rasche in there when he gets frustrated, or is trying to sound like a way cooler cop. He'd channel that Sledge Hammer something fierce.

PB would be something complex. Riddled with defeat, a bit of self-loathing like the kind you hear from a depressed friend who is pretending not to be depressed so you don't feel bad, compounded with someone who isn't getting their hormone therapy as often as she'd like. Someone so done with it that her life feels done with it. The kind of voice that when happy, you know it is richly earned---because happiness is such a luxury.

K.C. won't be back for a good long time, but I sort of hear him as a more gruff Fred Willard. One of his previous designs was a bit more like Willard. K.C. should sound like the kind of man who could coach little league without making the kids feel bad.

And lastly, Conrad, would sound a little like Walton Goggins doing a Michael Cera impersonation. Spineless, maybe a touch of smarm there, someone who isn't enjoying what they do but does enjoy what it is they can do.

Probably something like that.

I've always imagined Giselle to sound a bit like Velma, but without an American accent. Perhaps higher pitch and slightly British.

When I'm writing I kind of just hear my own voice saying the character's likes hahah

Akane, being a selective mute, does not sound like much of anyone - but Masahiro sounds quite a bit like Mark Lanegan.

I'll have to agree with @Kaykedrawsthings, I do not really hear a voice other then my own (in different tones of speech) in my head. XD;;
However, if I had to choose one voice for Jin, probably Matt Bomer Not exactly this, but just listening only in terms of warm tone and not TOO light or deep of a voice. Plus Dork.

She sounds incredibly young, looks young, and she hates everyone who points it out. So it's only natural that she sounds like everyone's favorite president: Vanellope Von Schweetz with hints of Rainbow Dash.

Alistair
I didn't always have a voice for him, and just pictured him as sounding really cool, despite being a total nerd. But then I found this new anime, and decided he would sound like Ledo from Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

Julius
She sounds like a younger version of Pearl, from Steven Universe. She even sings like her too!

Kayla
She totally sounds like Barbara Dunkleman. She's like, one of the few adults, and needs a playful but adulty voice.

Shayanna
Another voice from Steven Universe, she would sound like Connie.

Halo
He sounds an awful lot like Gavin Free, with less of the accent.

Taylor
Even though it sounds kinda silly, I always imagine Taylor sounding like Scaredy Squirrel, but maybe pitched down a little XD

The Narrator
The Narrator sounds like Cryaotic, because they both have voices like butter :o

I'm not American so I don't know the accent I'm actually talking about, (South American, maybe?) but I've always imagined Jed to sound like Hozier when he's singing Take Me To Church. West is most similar to a spaghetti Western set in the arctic so many of the characters accents reflect that. Serge doesn't, though. His accent is more refined.

I guess I'll think of voices for my comic Rooftop Bookshop since it's the furthest along out of my comics.

For Blaize I was thinking a generally light-hearted voice, but one that can get serious when need be. Very excitable and wears all of his emotions on his sleeve, so his voice would be very expressive, and honest.

Laurent would have a deep, calm, monotone voice, doesn't say a lot, but when he has to speak, he's heard, but all in all, he really doesn't speak too much since he has a habit of slipping off, or just being asleep in general.

Rory would have a calm, honest, gentle voice, one that makes you feel at ease when speaking, but not a voice that stays calm as Rory tends to get excitable. Has a tendency to speak quickly.

Z would sound like Rami Malek... Hands down no questions asked, that's what he would sound like . I don't even know how else I would describe his voice. Uhm, but as for tone of speaking, he would have a sort of sarcastic and teasing tone most of the time, though he is capable of taking on a more serious tone when he's well; more serious.

Quinn would have a quiet voice, one that's hard to hear if you're not really listening, very soft spoken and patient in tone.

RADE (left) has always sounded like a younger, teenage(Rade is 18 years old) Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop(the voice actor from the english dub). He's got an north eastern "American" style accent (even though in the series, which takes place in a post apocalyptic future, "America" does not exist)

STRYKES(right): has an English/British accent, and she is 19 years old so she sounds youthful, but very serious.

Na'hiraakiin has a voice like david hayter when he is unmasked. But whe he wear his mask, he has a voice like Solid snake.

Ma'sìtiri's voice is just like Yuna from FFX.

Taya has a voice like lady Galadriel.

For me it's the same as for @Kaykedrawsthings - my characters all kinda sound like me! I never really think about voices so this sort of question kinda throws me a bit. Odysseus sounds like a movie star probably. I can't quite decide who because I don't want him to sound too American or too English, but maybe someone like George Clooney or maybe Liam Neeson. I don't know - imagine your favourite male movie star and he probably sounds like that!

Polyphemus... I honestly couldn't say. Lower than I would expect but not too low. I can't imagine anything other than my own voice for him! D:

Hearing a character's voice has always been the trickiest part for me. It's interesting to see how many of you really have a clear picture of a specific actor or voice actor who would potentially play your characters!

I tend to read my script aloud to make sure the dialogue flows and makes sense, and one thing that just kindof happened was an accent for most of my characters. Two of them, Keela and Bran, are from Maryland, USA, but the other characters are from another world. Moreover, they are from a world where the inhabitants are half human, half animal, and I created a language to fit that (hopefully).

When I started reading the lines in this other language, this accent kindof just developed – a mix between Oberyn Martell from GoT: reference scene here (don't watch if you don't want spoilers) and strangely enough Dug from Up: scene reference here.

I can hear it best for these two:

Lucy I'd picture her sounding like Jamie Marchi who has played as Panty from Panty and Stocking with Garter-belt and Lizz from Soul Eater.

Jack would sound like Robert McCollum the voice actor of Dante from Sengoku Basara

Trent I would love to see be voiced by Todd Haberkorn

Mel I think would sound like Terra Strong by doing one of her more cute childish voices.

All my characters have really clear voices, when I think about them in my head. voice actors? no idea but I know exactly what they are all supposed to sound like.

All of my characters have Australian accents in my head, even though none of them are Australian.

I have daydreamed though who would play my characters in a movie. My main character Ella would be Emily Blunt. My guy in hat would be John Hurt. So their voices are as good as any.

wow, what an interesting (and tough!) question! I can hear my character's voices in my head so well, but trying to find a real-life equivalent was more difficult than I thought =_=

after listening to a bunch of voice actors who I thought might work, here's what I came up with:

Max sounds like a mix between Satsuki Yukino (Kaname Chidori in Full Metal Panic, Yoruichi in Bleach, and Tae in Gintama) and Ayumi Fujimura (Misaki in Kaichou wa maid-sama, Pitou in HunterxHunter, Ayano in Kaze no Stigma). She has a mezzo-soprano voice and is the type to get easily excited. She wears her heart on her sleeve and has no problems giving people a piece of her mind (even if she probably shouldn't). Here and here and Here are some examples.

Rei sounds like Nobuhiko Okamoto (Takumi in Kaichou wa Maid-Sama, Rin Okumura in Blue Exorcist, Obi in akagami no shiroyuki-hime) and Kamiya Hiroshi (Izaya in Durarara!, Yato in Noragami, Kou/Recruit in Arakawa under the bridge). He has a slight accent, something along the lines of mid-atlantic, that makes his origins hard to place, but he is easy to understand. He doesn't raise his voice very often and generally gives off an air of "this is too troublesome" or "I can't be bothered".Here and here and here are some examples.

Even though my characters don't speak Japanese (I guess technically they aren't speaking English either but whatever) I think I watch more anime than any other media with voices, so those are the voices I imagine. It's the timbre and tone of the voice that matters to me more than the actual words.

My main character, Susan Graham, from my comic Life of an Aspie, would probably sound like either Zooey Deschanel or Hayley Williams imo because of her adorkable quirky personality.
