What made you want to make a novel or comic? (also promo stuff)

In general, I wanted to make novels because I've been reading fiction books for so long and always had so many ideas in my head. I actually aspired to be a writer when I was young lol.

For my latest novel, it's (very) loosely based off real-life people whom I know. But the novel "If I Die Tonight" sparked off the idea of adding in technology as the main theme in my murder mystery.

Shackles was conceived after rewatching Hua Mulan (2007 live action movie) and telling my friend how much I wanted to write something which would invoke the same bittersweet emotions. Soulmate Alternate Universe (AUs) were also very popular at the time and I realized the two could be merged, while exploring the increase in gender equality during Empress Dowager Wu Zetian's era.

Dark Bytes is a collection of short stories, so it would be hard to describe the inspiration for all of them. I guess to be general, it was inspired by different movies, novels, and news articles.

I've always been making comics. I cant remember when I wasnt making comics- cept when I took a 10 year hiatus from 2003 to 2013.

I can't say I had a direct influence on what made me start writing/ or start writing any specific story. It just falls into the category of, "no one else is going to do it for me" and I was tired of things to read. All of the fantasy stories seemed to follow formulas, and all of the adventure stories were similar, and none of them focused or went in the directions, or way I wanted. The closest was a few of the ... what was it called, Dinotopia? books? But even those fell short and started going off in random directions, or directions of characters I didn't care about / were suddenly introduced.
I feel much better writing something that I myself will read.

I really love horror, but I don't like how dumbed-down the characters always are, & I dislike how the main characters always seem to adapt super quickly to horrible circumstances. And while people can adapt easily for short periods of time in emergencies-- permanent change, especially traumatic change, tends to result in PTSD and depression, but you never see that in the horror genre. Even in long term series like The Walking Dead, important people die-- people's KIDS die-- and by the next episode everyone is over it. That's not realistic and it annoys me lol.

So I like to draw horror/thriller comics, and I like to try to keep them both exciting AND keep the characters feeling "real".

I grew up reading newspaper comics. Peanuts and Calvin and Hobbes were my top two, but I also had FoxTrot, Garfield, and The Far Side among others.

In my senior year of high school, I discovered you could read comics on the Internet. Sluggy Freelance was my gateway, but I eventually discovered others, most prominently Fred Gallagher's Megatokyo. I'd had the idea for Nachos Con Carne for a while (the first characters I came up with way back in the sixth grade) but I wasn't sure what to do with it until I started reading Internet comics.

I eventually left college, and facing an abundance of free time while looking for a job, I finally decided to just settle down and start it. So I found myself a free hosting service, built a social media presence boosted by friends and family, joined Tapas (and later Webtoon), started Words. from some character designs I had laying around, and here I am.

I never really had a direct influence, at least not a recent one when I had started planning my comic back in 2015. I used to read webcomics like Lackadaisy and the Blackblood Alliance (yes I was a bit of a furry long ago, I loved the anthro disney style). I've always liked comics because it allowed me to capture the visuals in my head in a way that writing wouldn't do it justice. Kind of like an animation but without having to animate because that takes forever and I didn't have the time to keep up with animation.

Then when I started finally drawing my comic, I began buying comics from Image and DC in order to get examples of paneling and how stories progressed in professional comics. Sort of like how you have to read to get better at writing, I needed to read comics to get better at making them. I also use movies and shows as a reference for comics as well since they also have to work under limited amounts of story development that come with comics (a lot of plot and development has to happen far quicker than it would in a comic).

So those are the main reasons why I wanted to create my comic, Murphy's Law, rather than write it as a novel. It just lent itself too well to the comic medium and it wouldn't be the same without it because of the visuals in my head.

Boredom mainly. I was pondering the theme of my story as a real life possibility. The theme was that one day humanity will exhaust all possible original ideas and if someone did have an original idea the people would pay millions of dollars for that idea.

Umm , my reason is kind of silly and childish.I befriended this guy during the lockdown and I initially drew a comic to make fun of him and make him laugh but daaamn he was so entertaining I ended up drawing and inking over 60 pages of dialogues. I dont know if our friendship will last or if it will turn into something more serious but I like to think that even if we are no longer together, this doodle comic will serve as a memory for both of us

Everyone here has real stories to why they decided to make a novel or comic For me, it's just that I want to get those stories in my head out. I have a very vivid imagination and that can get quite annoying sometimes Writing those things down really helps and I just really enjoy writing!

My novel made me want to make a comic. XD Well mini-comics really, gotta do something to reel in those new readers. XD As for why I started my novel, I LOVE making stories and I absolutely LOVE writing. I can express myself freely with writing.

So I was watching some anime and I demons take human forms do they choose which gender or does it really matter as far as who they fall in love with (always those demon x human relationships in anime). So I was watching yu yu hakusho and in the Sensui arc and I really liked how much Itsuki loved him I guess? So I thought, did it make a difference that they were both men and did the same societal norms/gender roles apply and all that.
I didn’t want to do a demon taking on a human form because I thought it was too basic lol, so I thought about a character who becomes human through observing other humans and wishing to be like them. And then the story took off from there and of course, he falls in love (after some failed attempts) and eventually falls in love with someone, not seeing it as him being a man and being with another man, but two people just being in love.

I tried twice to do a webcomic, once in highschool ( it was BAD) and once in university (not bad but not good enough), and I'd read webcomics on and off for most of my formative years (Earthsong, Charby, that sort of thing). I've always loved writing stories and I wanted to improve my art, so Artifakt became kind of the perfect venue to work on my skills, it starts out pretty rough but by the most recent episode I can see my own growth and it makes me feel good.

For me it was a love of reading that spurred me on to a love of writing. It would always spark my overactive imagination and I'd have such a need to get them out into the world and make them real.

I felt my writing wasn’t a good way to portray my stories so I decided to use those art skills I’ve been working on for 4 years and use them for something besides just randomly creating characters.
I still right but I don’t post the writing anymore.

I think I've always tried to create stories. Even in videogames if I can't impart some kind of story to it I usually don't want to play it.

I had brainstormed many aspects of one story universe for years, even made a mod for Mount & Blade based on it. But now that I started writing I started with a new more scaled down universe. The other one was just way too heavy with stuff.

This one might seem like standard fantasy at first, but I'm going to instill my own ideas to it. "The Turbulent March" is a very character driver story with a very personal world.

The first "book" is a couple chapters from being done. Its a short first story.

I was always described to have an overactive imagination. Back then, I would daydream about many stories or fanfictions before I even encountered platforms like Wattpad. I also read a lot of books and manga so I always like a good story. Drama and fantasy aside, I love comedy so as a kid I would draw gag comics about characters doing dumb, bizarre, off-the-wall, somewhat dark, and happy things.

My latest webcomic Life's Lemonade is my attempt to express my love for that kind of storytelling. It's a slice-of-life webcomic about the protagonist going through her life. I initially created her after myself, but overtime she became her own person somehow. The humor is kind of dry at best and pretty wholesome. Anime and manga are major influences so I made the comic read from right to left.

I have always loved writing. I wrote my first stories when I was in kindergarten. I illustrated them, stapled them together, and showed them to family and friends. I need at least five personal assistants to get all the stories written down that are bouncing around in my head.

My tapas story is about a teenage girl in a small North Carolina town who notices things are changing supernaturally, yet she is one of the few people who is aware of it.

I used to write and read a lot as a kid. I adored writing fantasy stories on wattpad, but when I went to highschool I fell out of love with it and fell in love with drawing instead. However, sometimes I would write shortstories and I would really enjoy it, so when I saw that tapas, the app I had been using for reading comics had an easy to publish story section, I jumped on the oppurtunity.

For the specific novel I'm writing now, I've been inspired by a lot of BL comics and novels here on tapas actually mixed with an rp I did a year or two ago that went extremely well. My focus in storytelling has shifted from fantasy to romance and it's a chill and fun activity for me to do even if my writing is not all that good or popular.

Everyone's got these great stories but honestly, I just used to daydream this really over-convoluted story and I kept forgetting it and having to go back to it and eventually I was just like 'screw this, i'm going to write it down'. I've always loved reading, especially fantasy novels, and writing turned out to be the perfect form of escapism.

I used to write loads of plotless drivel and my prose got pretty good but finishing anything? noope. So I decided to plot out my big fantasy series and then I procrastinated by writing spin-off romances with my main characters, but hey! I finished them so I'm well pleased with myself.

This was the second one, but I decided to post it because it's the shortest and I'm pretty sure I reached my peak of personality in voice with my MC for this story.
