Grassblades lived in my head for years before I finally managed to solve its remaining major plot-issues and started actually drawing the thing.
It's partly an homage to all the stories I've loved - to Usagi Yojimbo, to Blade of the Immortal, to Hellboy, all the way through more obscure stuff like 365 Samurai and a Few Bowls of Rice - and to the visuals and atmosphere of the movies I love, like Hero and House of Flying Daggers.
It's me building my own story out of a box full of well-loved parts.
... and it's also me adding something that is entirely my own to the mix. I've piled a lot of swordfights and magical powers and hapless bandits on top to disguise it, but Grassblades is also a story about recovering from trauma and finding oneself again; about remembering that there is life beyond mere survival; about making up for our mistakes; of finding ourselves in situations we never wanted to be in, and making the best of it.
It's basically me telling myself - and everyone else - that we're going to be okay.
