When do you sub?

@keii4ii summed things up in much better and shorter words than me. Can't say I disagree with you on some matters, such as a subscription being motivating, but I'd be pretty bummed to find out they only subscribed out of obligation, pretty much like Keii said as well.
Basically...I guess whatever makes you happy, but knowing someone only subscribed to me out of obligation certainly isn't gonna make my day. If anything, it'll probably kinda ruin it. |D

I sub when the story is insteresting, if the latest page is good and interesting, I read it from the beginning until that last page and subscribe, else I just leave and go to read something else, "quality check" before subbing, reading all beforehand, unless is too long. That thing of subbing to someone that subbed to me is kinda dumb, if I get a sub, I get it because they got caught by my comic, not because they felt obligued to sub me for subbing them... Even if I get less subs that way, I least those few subs are real and not just "sorry" subs.

I don't sub as much as I did when I first joined, because I realize I don't have the time to read most of the comics on my list ~u~;; So nowadays if I sub a comic, it's because I see something with especially great artwork and a compelling premise that I want to sit down and check out when I get a chance. I generally like to surround myself with work that I find inspiring in some form or another.

But I never sub-for-sub. That just nets you a lot of inactive subs and hurts your stats in the long run. I'd rather have 100 genuine readers who actually enjoy my comic than 500 obligatory subs. I would also be really annoyed if one of my subs only followed me because they wanted me to follow them back.

It would never really bum me out. Probably because for me, I have places where I post comics to get the kind of comments and favs. Tapastic to me was the place I could finally do what I love and actually get a little money out of it as well. If I found out someone subbed out of obligation (or more importantly subbed in the hopes of receiving something back) I'd be rather indifferent.

It would be different if someone said, "Sir, your comic sucks, I can't believe I subbed out of good will..." That would feel more like pity than perhaps motivational.

I myself don't sub in the hopes of getting something back. if I sub to something it's either because I like the series, think I will like it or have received something in return and feel the need to give them a "pat on the back" of sorts. I'm the kind of person who likes to compromise with others who have strongly been supportive of me.

A lot of my readers, not only here but on other hosting sites have been very supportive of me and my work. I'm almost always trying to support them. So when I receive a sub, while not always I do try to do something to say thanks and giving them a sub basically says to me:

"You took the time to support me, let me take the time to support you and hopefully that support will blossom into something larger."

First couple of pages tell me everything, i usually go easy on writing if it's not the best, bc what interest me the most are the art (including sequencing and pacing between panels), main plot, story and the overall mood
Right now 'am reading all comics on my reading list, so i bookmark all new interesting ones

I'm curious on how many of you do actually bookmark instead of subbing. One of the biggest problems with Tapastic is that you can't differentiate between updates on the comic or the artists wall. I have nothing against the artists who I subbed but... I subbed for the comics, not necessarily to hear updates on the walls about daily lives.

And 'm thinking at some point of just switching off the subs of comics I enjoy but receive too many many...what I feel are...unnecessary personal updates and just have a bookmark ready to read the comic directly. It's something I wish Tapastic would do and be able to sub to both a comic and/or an artist .

If I feel like reading it then I sub lol. It doen't matter if it's because of the art or the story.

If I like the first few pages I look at, I usually end up subbing to a longform comic o3o but for gag comics, i gotta like... read the entire archive and catch up completely before i sub =3= im very particular about my humor ((not rlly))

I usually read about ten or twenty pages before subbing. I rarely sub to anything with very few pages and never if there is only one or two (no matter how good it might seem). I do this because I want longer more active series and I know it is very common for some people to upload like 1 to 4 pages and drop a series.

I never sub for a sub. If people are subbing me only to get subs back, well they ain't getting any. And when I sub people, I never expect them to sub me back. They should sub me because they like my stuff, not as some pity or whatever.

i love a good story, often times I read the plot first because even if I read the first few pages I may not get what's going on. It's hard for me to get the story by just 2 or 3 pages. So plot help.

As for the sub for sub thing? Empty subs don't make me feel good. I don't do it because for me I want the people reading to enjoy the comic. And hopefully comment on it one day. Rather then someone just doing it for me to sub back. I normally will comment on comics I read, not every page but I'll say something once in a while. Or like the page . But sub for sub I feel may hurt someone if I did that, because I wouldn't be enjoying the comic and it gives false impressions to the artist. If that makes since

I usually sub once I've read a couple of chapters/episodes and they've still kept my interest. I'm very open to art styles so that isn't a factor for me. And once I click that sub button I'll most likely not unsub. There's prolly so many comics that have piqued my interest but I haven't had the chance to read it due to school so I end up bookmarking them until I have the time to do so!

Like with others here, I think the sub for sub is kinda... odd. Like what Riko and Keii mentioned it just makes the artist/creator feel very bummed when you realize that you have a small percentage of subbers actually reading your works despite the number of subs you actually have.

No I didn't. I outright said that I sub because of

1.) I like the comic.

2.) might like the comic and thus will keep it in check for later.

3.) I have received a sub in return and thus feel a sense of obligation to offer some support as well, usually in the form of the sub for them.

At no point did I ever say I expected something in return. I've made it very clear in this topic that I give subs out as respect and support for those who have gone out of their way to support me. I have not at any point said that I sub to others expecting them to sub me back.

I especially look at the dialogue- if the writing style grabs me, I'm so much more inclined to sub! I'm also partial to unique artwork, fresh stories and designs. Something that feels different, that I don't see all the time. I also enjoy subbing new stories, I like seeing people's work grow, it's really something special.

I only sub to a series once I've caught up and am ready to read updates! I unsub basically as soon as I notice myself skipping updates or putting off checking the new page a whole lot. Which, uh, is why I have a reading list of 14 things. Subscribing feels a bit more like a public commitment than I'm comfortable with, so I'm very likely to look for the creator on twitter or something instead of subscribing at all!

I used to sub to series the second I was interested in them, but dropped it because few of them stayed after I caught up to them. Nowadays I read all the pages first and lurk around comics that have just started to see where they're heading. Usually what gets me is the characters, I need to feel for them. Sub for sub is a big no no and I admit I check out if the creator I'm about to sub is busy updating their wall every minute, because if they do that, I'll drop the comic even if I like it and bookmark it instead.
