Working on my comic Low-Tier Jane5 and I've been curious on what the general public considers too much of a shift in plot/tone?
Basically what I'm getting at is that is it bad, in a comedy based series, to inject some vague plot points/drama into it at separate points? Nothing that permanently changes the tone of the comic, more just individual storylines and elements.
Do people prefer to have heavier/more serious themes pop up in a comedy to address them for plot potential?
Or do people prefer to simply read a strictly-comedy series?

I think... it depends on how heartfelt your series is normally?

Like, the main reason loss.jpg7 was so heavily mocked was because the characters weren't people anyone cared about -- they were just there to make jokes. The injection of DRAMA into characters that didn't have a whole lot of depth was jarring and weird. People couldn't feel sad when they were too busy going "where the HECK did this come from?? why????"

Compare to something like, say, Gravity Falls -- it's a light-hearted, funny show, but it's also heartfelt -- the characters genuinely love and care about each other, and that's obvious even in funny moments. So when it hits a heavier moment, it doesn't feel like it came out of nowhere -- we care about the characters as people and we get invested.

So I think, strictly comedy is fine, and comedy + more intense moments is also fine, but you gotta have characters and tone that work for both if you're gonna do both!

(I hit enter too soon BTW, if my old comment above still hasn't deleted itself) Anyho, this is a question I had when I first posted my comic1 on Tapastic, because it starts out with basically just comedy and then slowly gets more serious. I was really nervous when I posted the first 'dramatic-ish' scene, since everyone was always commenting about 'how funny' the comic was, I was worried I would disappoint them when I posted a more serious update, but instead, I got very positive reactions! Everyone wanted to learn more about the plot.. I say, unless your comic completely loses it's humor without any warning or foreshadowing, you're good. People seem to like serious moments in funny comics more than one might think XD

Honestly I've been feeling some hesitation with Time Gate because we're starting to get into the darker portion of the story. Not just darker either, but more... fantastical, if I can use that word xD

Literally, the progression of Time Gate is very weird across the series, and it doesn't really start to follow a strict plot until Book 2 when the next main character is introduced. The first book has a plot, no doubt about that, but it's also a prequel for the second book and helps establish the world, the characters, everything you need to know when going into Book 2 when a bigger story begins to unfold. And it started off as a girl hating on one guy in high school... the shippers love it, but I don't know how much they'll actually like it as it starts to turn more and more into a fantasy story with time travel and whatnot. I'm hoping the readers will grow with the plot as it progresses, but we'll see how it goes x33

nothing as bad as loss.jpg though

unless i wanted to make a joke out of it in which case i'm an asshole

lol miscarriages

Thank you so much for such a lengthy reply! You explained things very well, and I agree on the heartfelt aspect of it. I'll think a lot on this.
