So lots of space needed, got it.

It idle question at this point, but me thinking that the problem with hiring international freelancers is that some live where cost-of-living am very high. It tend to jack up the operating expenses. Some freelancers live where Big Macs am cheaper, but talent pool am limited. Artist's colony may be solution.

I think it would depend on the mindset of the people there. I don't want to be surrounded by overly sensitive types who talk constantly about politics. And I do not want to be surrounded by white people who think creating folk art inspired by non-white cultures put them at one with nature and their spirituality.

Nope. Just not my thing; I remember a really good friend of mine talking at one point about joining a commune...but dude is also in his late 30s/early 40s still trying to "find his way" through stuff.

I mean... it's a colony, not your spouse, so most likely you could not decide those things

I really don't know. Overall I am bad in interacting with people (and noise lol), and this sounds like living in (artists) dormitory, which is probably not great, as all dorms go =) But if I have to go working to another country, and this is the only place where I could live and not spending all my money for rent... sure, I guess?

Nope. Couldn't pay me enough.

I realize I live better with people who do different things from me and aren't fully artists. Family and dormmates included. My uncle does photography, but he's an engineer. My aunt does singing, but she's a chemist. It balances things out.

That, and I see enough people stress themselves out and keep to an art gloom that could likely seep into my soul if I had to live with them.

Nope.

I mean...sure, why not? If it's affordable, brings me closer to work opportunities, and I at least have my own space where I can have peace and quiet...there's no problem.

I don't see why artists should be so much more horrible to live with than non-artists. You don't have to be an artist to be a pompous ass, or depressed, or stressed out every day...

Looks fun.. from far.
I'm way too introverted for that. I found my max is seeing people 6 hours a week, so I think that would not work.

But I could consider living with artists etc for a while if we are all working on the same (short) project.

Hahhahhahhahahahahahahahahahhahhahahha..... Nope

Similar arrangements have worked in the Philippines. Many Koreans come here to learn English because it cheaper than other places and quality of teachers am alright. Nightlife pretty good too, and many behave like American college students in Mexico. (Philippines kinda is Asian Mexico, but that another story.) Me also know people who come back from the States for further studies. Can stretch student loans to cover housing and food.

@Jenny-Toons What if you live in building with mixed group? Students, families, etcetera?

I didn't say that. I am talking about white people who act like creating non-white inspired work makes them more spiritual and one with nature. A lot of the colonies that popped up during the whole hippy movement were inspired by this mindset.

This is not the same as someone who want to create Japanese brush art because they like the aesthetic. It's the whole spiritual aspect that makes it a bit creepy.

What kind of building make good artist's colony? Me was thinking medium-sized apartment building based on Ancient Roman insula. Have roof terrace, airshaft, and inner courtyard with garden, playground, and exercise facilities. Ground floor am devoted to businesses and communal area. Have small grocery store, laundry, and storage facility. Have cafeteria, common kitchen, lounge, and conference room.

This is something my husband have talked about doing and we’ve been saving up to buy a big suitable building. We have a lot of friends who draw comics who would benefit from having a cheap or free place to stay while they work through a big project. We have a list of folks who are interested in it! I was actually just looking for a suitable space last night.

If it doesn't have a personal bathroom in every room (toilet + shower), I am not going xD I'm so not missing the kind of dorm without any privacy
