Well I'm no expert on the subject as to where exactly the line is drawn between a "soft" or "hard" sci-fi, but I make a comic which I would define as a soft sci-fi. For me, the idea is that instead of wanting to present a grand theory about science and technology, I'm looking at it more from the hum…

Not unless you say em, but then they aren't thoughts anymore. So no.

This is the thing? Like, her whole deal that Darthmongoose detailed is a GREAT example of the dynamics of self-censorship, be they arguments for or against. This idea that just because it's a flashpoint for heated opinions doesn't make it any less apt a case study. But because it has "Trans stuff" i…

And what was the part that was "off topic" Azifri? Write it out for me.

You're right, it should be censored, shouldn't it.

I love this, "everybody shut the FUCK UP about something I've decided is off topic! By the way, here are my opinions about it........"

I think for me, the risk of the artificial "intelligence" stealing stuff would be far too great, I'd be fuckin mortified if it turned out it just nicked someone's art, I don't trust that it's creating work that's in any way distinct from the work it's referencing, be it imagery or words. I'd rather …

I'll tell you what, and this is not so much a tip as an observation, I've managed to get to just over 14k subs on my comic and you know what? I'm not confident I could do it again. So much has been just wild chance, launching as EA kind of shot me up from... I think I was at 5k before that? The visi…

I might have shot a bit high with that one huh?

I will say this, I feel like the convo has drifted back in to "thing: bad or good?" when the whole point of this particular thread was to maybe get away from that style of thinking. Maybe start a "stuff I hate in media" thread. Exorcise your media bugbears perhaps.

Just a lil joke, hoping 2 give you a lil chuckle. Take care. :sunglasses:

You know what, I feel like boss mode in making villains is have one of each, and then make them fight one another :sunglasses:

That's a good way to sum it up. Raw Cinemasins energy, I can't stand it. Reminds me of that huge Twitter thread of horrific "writing tips" that went viral for being exactly that kind of shallow, taste based "advice". But hey, it draws eyes and clicks and arguments, doesn't it

So that's a "yes" then JOKES! I swr XD

Also I have Covid so go easy on me, friends.

There are a LOT of them though, the villain one got me I wont lie cos my villain is the "bad" kind in that thread's view, okay fine whatever. But there seems to be a larger trend of "should X be Y" which is just a poor way of framing a discussion imo, I think we ought to aim higher than that when it…

Totally agreed! This is something I want to get across very generally with this thread, those aren't the rules! those are just surface things – they can be whatever you want! and are, in fact, often the most fun and most creative part! Don't be putting rules in place before they're actually needed I…

EXACTLY, right? I feel like it misses the forest for the trees. Sad backstory, no sad backstory, whatever! The only question is: is it GOOD? And that's not something that's answered in a yes or no.

I feel like this is a common thrust in the discussions here. Questions that pose a yes or no answer to story challenges. I feel like this is such a reductive way to view storycraft. It's not yes or no, one or the other. I want to post this not so much to clickbait, but to state that I believe the b…

Might I ask, where was it you got the idea that Villains HAVE TO have a sad backstory?

"Content Advisory" has the same issue as "Warning" I'm afraid, they both signal something that is potentially negative and harmful to more sensitive readers. LGBTQ+ characters on their own is not negative or something likely to trigger mental trauma (unless you're a bigot) so it's not an appropriate…

Aaah, I get you! I think part of my confusion comes from the use of the word "warning" when I think "preview" or "assurance" might be more apt? A good way to do that is something I've seen other creators of LGBTQ+ works do (and I'm considering myself actually) is, once a character makes their fir…

OMG Okay yes I did misunderstand, wow yeah that is horrific! What an asshole! Okay my opinion? Don't put in a warning about underage characters being LGBTQ+. You don't want to be kowtowing to people who choose to be offended about that. My story is also about underage characters and I've never ha…

That person sounds like they're the one with the problem from what I can tell. No one owns the LGBTQ+ tag. Also remember, those genre tags are not permanent. you can change them up as often as you feel! You could debut your story, when you feel it's not come into its queerness as fantasy or whatever…

IMO LGBTQ+ isn't a genre per se, it's more a shoutout to the particular audience you want to attract. My comic... although the MC being gay is a core part of the story, it's not a "gay" story I don't think, it's just about a lesbian at the end of the world. It's as much sci-fi and comedy as it is ga…

Quick post, just want to shout out that I really appreciate the info shared ITT. Great stuff!

I would hope to god I was at least rich enough to live in total seclusion, full Brando mode. Being poor and famous is a shite combo.

There's the Screentones podcast server which is nice, not too big so you can have a convo without being interrupted but not too small as to be totally dead https://discord.gg/hAfKbKtj the podcast is a good listen too if you're a webcomicker :3

Oof yeah I'm in a similar situation, cant use paypal so I can't actually get paid from Tapas. I asked about alternatives and its paypal or nothing. I just send the money I earn to my mom. RIP us.

Hmm you know thinking about it, I had always considered myself the kind of writer who redeems "bad" characters but actually looking at my work, I never do it. I think I like to add in little snippets of info that might explain an antagonist's behaviour just a little but I think I actually find there…
