There's something i've been trying to pursue for a while, and that is making my own site so I don't have to rely on someone else's hosting. The trouble is, every time I think i'm ready to try and build a website (I've been told wordpress is the way to go) I am overwhelmed with what I have to do. Any time I see a line of code somewhere, my brain scrambles and panics. I took a look at Weebly because of it's "fool proof" drag 'n drop interface but it was too bare bones for me to do with what I wanted proper.

Are there any places I can go to that will hold my hand and guide me through this stuff? Or run me through the basics? Me brain dumb, but i'm thinking so many people have their own sites it can't be that hard.

Wordpress is pretty simple! If you use the comicpress5 plug in you'll be good to go, and you'll have the freedom to add extra customization, but if that doesn't interest you, the default comicpress site is totally functional. Here's what my site looks like if you're curious: http://heroicshenanigans.com/17

If you're using wordpress you'll also need a host though-- when first setting up my site I made the mistake of buying my hosting through wordpress.com, which for some reason is different from the wordpress you find at wordpress.org and it didn't let me install the comicpress plug in. So make sure you get your hosting from a provider that allows for easy wordpress installation (bluehost is what I use, and apparently they're the one wordpress recommends)

Hopefully that makes sense. It is pretty simple if you do it right. I you choose to go with wordpress/comicpress, don't hesitate to ask me any questions you may have! I don't want anyone to make the same mistakes I did! And I only got through them because others were willing to help me. Including the creator of comicpress, who's really easy to get a hold of on twitter (in fact he approached me because i was tweeting about having trouble. he's super willing to help)

Best of luck!

alright thanks. I'll throw any questions your way if I run into a setback (very likely)

Thank you, that would be awesome =)

I wanted to try wordpress first but it seems I still have to purchase a server for that, is that correct? I can't do anything offline? @_@

@Nugtown I'm in the same zone. It's not so much about using stuff like Word Press or anything else; it's that I dont have anything planned/mapped out and it puts me in a mood where I'm like "I cant even,"- coz I know I will start to stress the f**k out trying to put the site together. I'm at the point where I cant even figure out what to say on the text stuff( "what do I say?"), trying to figure out visuals & design(then I groan at the fact that I may have to produce more art for the site).

Trying to slow things down so that I can start figuring out what I want to do for my site. I'm not trying to build a "custom super" site, but at the same time I dont want a "simple cookie cutter template style with no personality type" site.

You can use free website builders like Wix, but remember, if you do put a lot of time on your website then that MIGHT be unstrategic. Mark Crilley (A famous manga artist) said that you'll have it, but no one with really knows about it. The places they find you are the famous publishing sites (Like here on Tapastic)

But that's just a suggestion (But that's just a theory! CX)

@cleo_san Once you have your site hosted through a host that's compatible with wordpress, you should be able to install it directly to your site without having to download anything.

Here's a screenshot from my dashboard on my bluehost account:

There's an "install wordpress" button built right in, and if I recall correctly they basically install it for you, no downloading any files to your own server or anything. I don't have any experience using wordpress with other hosts, but bluehost makes it simple and they had the best price when I was looking at hosts, so I'd recommend them.

@Shanny8 I'd look at other people's comic sites to see what they've done and get ideas. You can always start with the bare minimum and add more as the mood strikes you. I don't have a cast ;page yet because I haven't had the time, even though I know that's something I want to have eventually. Your website can be a process, and doesn't have to be completely finished right away! You can always keep improving it.

EDIT: @cleo_san Okay I think maybe I misunderstood your question but I think I get what you're talking about now. Are you asking if you can make a site with wordpress offline, before buying a domain and having it live on the internet? Just to sort of test it out before you spend money? As far as I know, you can't, I could be wrong though. That would be a nice feature to have!

@nelmathyria I've been looking at others' sites that I follow & read their material on the reg- no bueno. Their sites arent designed in a format close to how I would want mine to look. I'm gonna have to keep researching, though...I wanna try to get this done by late summer next year- at the latest.

Biggest obstacles working against me: time, RL job, working on current comics, need of rest.

You should look into a thing called Zeronet. That hosts on your own computer, but once the website is published can be accessed by anyone. I'm having trouble with it, as I'm having trouble port forwarding though.

There is also Github where you can host one free website per account.

Yep, that's exactly what I meant =) Since money is short for me I have limited options for buying a domain on a whim just to find yout that I can't do a thing with wordpress XD
So I guess I'll just have to wait until I reched my first patreon goal @_@ If I can make that, I can afford a website °/)°

I think I'll use Bliehost, too - are they very expensive? o.o

You can make an account on wordpress.com for free and experiment with that, but it isn't the same as the wordpress.org that you would install on a site hosted through someone else (confusing, I know). So that could at least get you some experience in creating your own website? I don't know a whole lot about it though, and if you decided to buy a domain and use the other version of wordpress I don't think you'd be able to transfer anything over.

My Bluehost plan is a little under $5 a month, but I don't think they have a monthly payment option, so you have to buy a full year at once (which was $59.40 for me)

A domain can point anywhere including a Tumblr blog if you like. Some artists have luck just hosting there. Depending upon the suffix (.com, .org, .blog) purchasing a domain can be fairly inexpensive. Google has a domain purchasing option and you can actually use Google Play credit to purchase one.

Hosting fees are pricier and many hosts offer easy install like BlueHost. I personally use DreamHost and I get my domain for free, but you do have to pay for one year at a time. You can set up a personal server and host there, but it gets more complicated.

I second @nelmathyria suggestion of playing around with Wordpress on wordpress.com just to see what it is like.

Actually you can do this by locally hosting the website on your own machine. You can also later port forward and publish a website through Zeronet on your own computer, making it censorship resistance.

(The King of Thailand can't take down criticism if you live in the US, compare this with Facebook.)

Other uses include using local hosting to only host passkeys for cryptography without making them widely available on the web, such as through Public Key cryptography for a limited audience.

Okay, now my question is: how? =) Hosting my website on my computer sounds appealing, but since I have two left hands when it comes to computer stuff I'm happy for any hintsy you can give me!
A friend told me to get a wamp-server but I habe no clue what this is @_@

There are a good handful of comics I read who's main "website" is via tumblr only with a domain (10-12$ a year) pointing to it. There's also a few I read who host on Smackjeeves and with their template capabilities, it's often hard to notice it's on SJ at all.

The wordpress route is very easy if you can afford a little bit for hosting. I think I shell out $10 a month, but am also 34yo with a full time job. WP is very very plug-n-play with themes/plugins to help you along. Your host can generally install it for you within 10 minutes, then it's time to move in and decorate. ComicPress and... er.. the other thing are great and easy for comics as part of it. (Sorry, it's very early in the morning and words)

I think the best way to go is to buy a domain name and link it to a tumblr-
