Hey everyone !

I have been writing a mystery comic for over a year now and I'd love to find more similar works on this websites and talk with the authors, see how they undertake the mystery aspect, structure their story and all.

So if you are also an artist working on a mystery story, or something similar in one way or another to my comic, describe and post your work here, I read on Tapas, Webtoon etc... And we can talk about it and help each other (if you're interested in it of courses haha).
I'm very open minded and interested in anything, it can be a police investigation, detective story of even something paranormal/lovecraftian, I love this !

As for me, my story is called Teenparty, which is the first book of the series called Hidden Insights.
So far I have a little less than a hundred episodes, a prologue, three chapters etc... So you can see the evolution or my style through the pages !
It's mystery/investigation-themed but presented like a slice of life comic, and it has/will have some subtle philosophical meaning about being human and open-minded. It takes place in 2007/2008 ans follows the college life of Shelby Eastwood, a junior student who just entered journalism at university, somewhere in West Virginia :

Hope you'll like it !

Here's the cover btw :

I'm looking for honest feedback or even review, as you prefer, and I'm obviously willing to give feedback too !

Thanks

This is my Fantasy/Mystery/Comedy webcomic
Always great to see the mystery genre entering the forums!

Hello !
I am reading your comic and I see that you introduced everyone super quickly, that's an interesting way of doing it !
It seems super story focused, I like it ! I'll give you more feedback later (:

Thanks!
I really like your story too. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Yup I'm writing a supernatural mystery comic myself about a bunch of kids solving a mystery in a strange town. That produces weird static

Well, I think mine could be a mystery?
Its mainly a fantasy adventure, but its also a bout trying to discover what has happened in the world, finding clues, and trying to restore the chaos if possible, and its not something that will be revealed for quite some time

I havent been thinking to much about what genres it actually is but im starting to think i could add mystery to it

I'm reading them all, I see interesting art styles here and very different stuff, that's what I want ! Thanks !
Btw, i think I'm going to like your comic a lot rumpen, it looks like some really nice fantasy with very cool characters and natural interactions ! Great job !

I have more of a supernatural mystery comic.... I think when I try to plot a mystery, I get all the major plot points down and then write the mystery around it. I usually get the main mystery points and clues out while I’m writing the script for a chapter because that’s when I’m like “wait this character would do this” and alter the main stuff more... how do you do write your mystery points?

Hey ! I've been trying to read all you comics at the same time haha, I caught up with a couple of them so far.
I like the way that the mystery is never brought up the same way, but the protagonist(s) generally have no idea about it at the beginning and it starts like a slice of life, then weird stuff is brought up. But Djinns does have all of its lore building done and the hero is already on her quest, which brings the need to have several flashbacks for the reader to understand.
That's a cool idea that Ill probably use soon too I think.

What are your inspirations/references btw, if you guys have any that's worth mentioning ?

Well I would say earth bound and persona 4 are one of my bigger influence story and tone wise. Art wise it would be cartoons from the early 2000's and 90's.

Yes fellow mystery writer! Just started reading yours. It's so far along and it's definitely interesting to see how mysteries can develop differently. I see that yours is very slice of life and slowly builds toward the mystery aspect. I think mine does something similar with the slow build.

The supernatural mystery deals with a main character and what happened concerning an event called the Story of Somnus but its gonna be a long while before it all comes out :joy:

Hi there! :grinning: I consider my comic a mystery, and in it's own unorthodox way is a kind of investigation mystery? It's technically a slice of life story about teenage delinquents investigating the source of gang violence in their area, although I tend to advertise it more as a drama/romance.

It's nice to see a thread for mystery webcomics over here! I rarely do come across them, and it's interesting to see how other creators tackle mystery, so over some time I'll have to check out the comics posted.

Also, I really like your comic Teenparty so far! The art style really pulls me in, and the way you draw your characters is so expressive. I still have quite a bit to go in the story, but I'm curious to see what the characters end up finding out about the disappearances, but I'm also really interested in seeing the characters interactions with each other as well.

As for my inspirations, I'd say I get pretty inspired when I read something that's different than what I'm used to and takes me out of my element, but still interests me, so it usually can have a bit of similarity to what I'm writing about. Oftentimes I find things that I can use as research purposes, but then I end up being a fan of what I was checking out, haha. During the time where I was stuck on ideas for the mystery aspects in my comic, I looked for things to read in the library and ended up with a bunch of different mystery novels and watching some movies with mystery/investigation elements. I'd say that something that really helped inspire the ideas for my comic were the novels by Keigo Higashino, I've ended up reading all of his books that are currently translated in English. A lot of his mysteries (more of his Detective Galileo ones) start off with the audience knowing who caused a crime, but the story involves trying to piece together why they do it. I also am a big fan of the Yakuza game series, which funnily enough I started playing because I wanted to learn a bit more about Yakuza, and now it's my favorite game series ever. :joy:

That's interesting, I can totally feel the cartoon vibe ahah. The story and world is very dark and creepy to me, but I really like the color process, good job ! The characters are super nice too, you introduced them quite naturally !

I like the fact that there are plenty of characters that all stand out from each other by their abilities and preferences, however I find it hard to focus on the mystery since everything is super unusual in this universe. Like a talking bag is weird and must be hidden whereas the butler is a huge jacked penguin ( I love it) and there are furries everywhere living totally normally among humans. And why are they all latinos ? I have many questions about that universe haha !

These are really great advices, I can't wait to start reading your comic as well. I think I do use the same kind of techniques but basically, I start by clarifying what is it that I want my characters to learn through their investigation/quest, so I start by the end message and then I build it all the way back up to a beginning before my chars actually know about the mystery. then I try to link all the scenes I find important or interesting together. Character development, bounding, relationship forming etc.. These are all super important to me, hence the reason it starts off as a very slice of life thing. But the scenario is always flexible and I like to change it and add additional degrees of complexity when it fits and helps building a richer world/story.

Hello there ! Thank you alot for the feedback. Yeah, that is because I started Teenparty as if it wasn't going to be story driven, and I just wanted it to comic strips, but I fell short of ideas soon and I loved my characters so much I wanted to involve them into the story of what was supposed to be another comic. It's a great merging if you prefer haha.
I'll read your comic soon !

I really like how that sounds, I can feel like there might be some similar themes going on with my story, I think this will be a great read, and maybe it'll help me see my story from a different aspect. I love the fact there is a real space and time setting.
I'm super glad you appreciate the story and thanks for your opinions on my drawing style ! By all means keep on reading and tell me what you think :stuck_out_tongue:

I do feel that. That's why I think it's great that we gather here to talk and eventually discover new ways of writing and drawing. I feel like going on to actively do research to find inspiration or learn about a subject you want to treat in your story is overall a very useful thing.

Oh that's an interesting way to do it. I love when the tropes are reversed or explored in new ways.
Yakuza games are amazing indeed !

I have a mystery comic : )

In a nutshell ''five teenagers try to live their life while murders keep happening around them.''
