Do you talk to anyone about your story before making it?

My sister knows all the plot because she is the co-author of our webcomic.Sometimes we argue, but this helps us to get better. I really enjoy making comics together with her and I can't see myself making a webcomic with someone else

I keep most of it under wraps and tease bits and pieces. I know that the bare bones plot details etc won't sound particularly great early on as I won't have fleshed them out. I'd rather be my own editor and keep the silly sounding ideas to myself lol

However, I did get some early feedback off reddit when I was in the planning stages which really saved my hide. It was regarding the overall plot revolving around some Macguffins but I'm so glad I changed it from that potential cliché minefield to what it is now.

I normally talk at my friends about different issues that I'm having with character, plot etc. Thankfully they've got bad memories, so even if I spoil them, by the time they read it, they've already forgotten the spoilers.

I do less and less nowadays. I used to do it a lot and I think it's important when you start out to ask for feedback from people you trust. But nowadays I am confident in my ideas, I only ask for feedback if I feel like I am making a major risk. Sometimes I get a bit manic with ideas......

Sometimes I'll like to run a specific idea past a friend just to get their feedback on it. Generally I won't dump the entire plot on them because I'll probably be asking that same friend to read the finished work and I'll want to have their fresh impressions. I'd worry that if I discuss my ideas or plot points with them it'll skew their thoughts on the final product so I tend to keep my cards close to the chest.

I have found that in my case, it's sort of a counter-productive move. Mostly because once the story bit is out of my noodle and told, I lose a huge part of the required motivation to actually work on it. I constantly rework my own ideas too, so if I happen to change my mind on something, I want to make sure that it comes from me and not from a related outside influence reflected upon the ideas themselves (indifference, a look/expression, excitement, approval, misunderstanding, etc.)

I talk to my brother about my stories all the time. If a spoiler is coming up in the discussion, I'll tell him and ask if he wants to hear it anyway. If not, I shut up. But often, it's okay and we talk about the decision I've made and he gives me a genuine reaction that I can build off of.

Other than that, no. I don't trust anyone else with my raw ideas.

I'll talk to about 5 or 6 people about characters, stories, and themes. Most of these people will never read my comic –and don't read comics in general– but that's not why I ask them; it's for their take, given their life experience and thoughts on the themes I'm exploring.

I think it's really good practice for creators to go outside their own circle of friends (where opinions and stances on life are usually similar) to avoid confirmation bias. Those opposing views will help you develop your writing more than anything else; especially in regards to crafted well-developed characters.

Oh heck yeah...

I've been talking about my novella concept for ten to twenty years now. I have been using the main characters from my novella in roleplaying games that I run very frequently. Sometimes they are fleeting NPCs who sell gear at the marketplace, and sometimes they are the major gods of the world. I even made one of those characters into my imaginary friend. (I never did develop her strongly enough that I would consider her a tulpa, but she's on that path.) It's only a little bit at a time, but folks who know me well will recognize them.

The advantage I have found of using characters I know so well is that they are incredibly easy to write. I carved out a niche of about two hours yesterday evening to write for the first time in a couple of months, and I knocked out three thousand rough draft words easily. This story almost writes itself.

Sometimes I do but honestly sometimes it can have a negative effect on me and slow my progress because what I want is for people to see my story and If i just tell it to them then I don't have that fire lit under me to keep me going to actually get the comic out for them.

I'm lucky; I got a whole group of other writers that I'm personal friends with, and we meet every week for DnD anyway. So while we're there, we often tell each other about our stories and get feedback on what could work and what doesn't work inside the context of each other's stories. It's pretty fun, honestly!

I talk to a ton of people! First I float it by my husband, who filters out my more awful ideas. Then it goes to my group chat of webcomics friends. Then I bring it to my friend Alexis, who's a wonderful writer and who's helped me out a ton with story development. Finally it goes to Atla, my editor! I like bouncing ideas off lots of people because others can see things about your comic that you don't.

I usually think about everything, do a brainstorm on my own and after I'm quite happy with the story I'm telling my girlfriend about it, as she's also drawing and writing her own comics. It's important for me cause we share a likeness for certain things/genre and I always ask to answer sincerely if she likes it or not (but it also help with making the idea fresh with a different kind of view). And if I'm confident enough I tell my brother as he is some sort of voice of reason and will tell me immediately if he would read a story like that or not.

Although I'm mostly confident with my ideas, it's easier for me to come up with merging them together into one story when I talk it over with my girlfriend, maybe she's doing some kind of magic that helps me write the stories

OH yes. When I was first doodling it out as a "manga", my friend and I would spit ball ideas for villains of the week and things we'd like to see happen!

Since rewriting it, I constantly ask my partner for advice on elements I feel are lacking, and I try to join writing support groups where I can to get more points of view.

alot of my friends are writers and creators we often discuss our ideas, rp's and scripts. and help each other out. we all know not every idea is a good idea and if some ideas don't get used no hard feelings. like i have one friend who is apart of my comic GodTown. he had a big part in the writing of a particular character but some stuff didn't fit the story so the writing just gets revised. no hard feelings.

I've recently started talking about my comic with my mom! She's the only one that actually criticizes it without being afraid of hurting my feelings, and she's seen enough movies to have a sense of what's cliche and what's not.
In fact, I've changed my story up quite a bit because of my mom, and it's starting to make much more sense
