Okay so here's the scoop.

I've not been here very long. So far I've enjoyed my time, what little there is of it. I have a single comic series up since December. It hasn't been noticed much, but that's not why I'm considering taking it down (if that's even possible).

I don't think my comic is 'suited' for TAPAS. In that the way the comic is done just isn't optimal for TAPAS.

My comic's 'style' is rather traditional. Instead of utilizing Tapas' down-scrolling format, my series so far has been a simple 'page by page' kinda deal, like most other sites tend to do (DA, Smack Jeeves, etc). Each 'episode' is a new page. And while I thought this would be okay, since people see new content twice a week, apparently I'm getting complaints that the episodes are 'too short' (this was actually on Webtoons, not here. But same format there regardless).

I'm quickly seeing that perhaps my comic just isn't meant for this place. I really wanted to fit in, but it would take a LONG time for me to not just reformat the existing pages to be better and more interestingly viewed here, but I'd also be sacrificing the OTHER sites I post my comic at, places that can't handle the longer down-scrolling format.

So I'm at a crossroads...I can't very well make the same series but formatted two different ways. I'm already hard pressed for time with making it this one way. What do I do? Should I just remove my series from here (and probably Webtoon) and come back if I ever can give it the proper 'showing' it needs (it's unlikely that'll ever happen though, let's be honest). Or should I just keep it going anyway the way I have been and hope it's 'unfitting' format wont' kill it in the long run? Should I try and 'chunk up' pages a bit and make episodes thicker, but released less often (I personally think more often is better, even if you get it in bites. But maybe I'm wrong)? If I did that though, Tapas and Webtoon would be behind compared to the other sites the comic is at (you could easily go elsewhere and see pages 'early' before you see it on TAPAS for example, even if the page is just a piece of an episode).

Any advice would be appreciated. I feel like my series is dead in the water already just because it's not utilizing everything that better comics on this site do.

While Tapas does lend itself towards scrolling format, there are a wealth of popular comics that use the more traditional page format. Often this is for similar reasons to you, quality of posting on multiple platforms, or because they plan on printing.

Page format isn't uncommon here. Mostly Tapas audience isn't going to see that and think "Well this just isn't fitting in", so if your only reason is feeling like you don't fit, I strongly recommend you stick it out! You're probably just psyching yourself out!

My comic is in the same page by page format. The only real issue with this is mobile viewability. So what can you do if you don't want to rearrange your entire comic? It's actually pretty simple. Pop onto the ap, look at your comic with the phone turned sideways, and check out how readable it is. Is the font big enough? Is the art loading at a nice quality so you can generally view without zooming in? If yes, your fine, if no, probably all you have to do is use a bigger font.

Webtoon readers tell everyone "too short". Don't take it seriously, work at your own pace. And of course, its up to you to share your comic where you want and as you like. If you don't feel comfortable on tapas or anywhere is, its okay to leave. But you might find its worth it to stick it out? Either way, I don't think the format is as big a deal as readability and quality art. Scroll format is great, maybe you'll try it in the future (hey, maybe I will too!), but I doubt print friendly formats are going to disappear anytime soon.

Good luck :yum:

I wouldn't compare your comments on Webtoons to here. Even though they have very similar demographics, said demographics are used to different formats.

Webtoons readers do enjoy long updates, yes.

But Tapas updates (even with their paid content) are more suited to be short but frequent updates. So Webtoons users update maybe once a week or once every other week, with large updates, whereas most successful Tapas comics update once a week (if they're gag comics) or 3 times a week with one page per update. It's all about what their respective demographics are used to and expect. Here on Tapas, small amounts with frequent updates is the norm. You'd be better off not comparing expectations between two completely separate platforms :stuck_out_tongue:

Plus, there are a lot of comics here that are drawn to be made for print but are/were still successful on Tapas.

All of the above!

Pay Webtoon comments no mind, most of the audience there are self-entitled teens anyway. All my comics are in page format, upload one page a week, and they do just fine.

And if you have reservations about specific aspects of formatting I can see if I can give you any pointers!

I just started follwing you on both here and webtoons. Not sure if you've noticed. I really like your series and I like what you bring to the table here. I feel a similar way with my comic not fitting the tapas pop trend but It's all the more reason to be the change tapas needs. Im only one fan and I know what it's like to feel like there's no place for you here but I will say I try to be an active follower of series that I follow so if you decide to stay you can count on my support.

All of the above as well!!

I beg to differ with you. I just paid your comic a visit (will read it soon enough!) and it's suited all right. I also do my comics in a traditional page format (not my series right now, but even that's an adaptation of a strip format) and the only thing that worries me is if the letters are too small. Batting an eye on your comic, some of it kind of go into the limit, to me (although I read in desktop, mostly, so no worries), but it's all good.

I believe one of the coolest things about Tapas is how it supports different formats. Yeah, the scrolling is kind of common, but it also has many interpretations. I feel that this is a site that embraces endless styles of comics.

(And I've never been to WebToons but with each post I read about it, it feels like a kind of toxic place. I like Tapas community a lot, though)

Wow. I was not expecting such responses this swiftly!

Yeah I probably am psyching myself out. I take a look at what seems to be the most popular and think that must be what I have to do. Granted, I do see the immense appeal of formatting for mobile down-scrolling, so if I can somehow create a happy medium for either, I will probably try and do that.

I have looked at how my comic looks on mobile. I've not had any issues with reading it admittedly, but a lot of the details get a bit smooshed. Still, it's read-able, and not hardly so, so I think it's fine there.

Yeah maybe I'm just overreacting. Admittedly it was only 1 person who mentioned it, and it wasn't even malicious. In fact, what little audience I've gotten on both platforms have been really positive =) (thank you Vicar! I have noticed you!) I should be grateful for that.

I do still think something needs to change, but what exactly I'm not sure. Especially when I got about 4 websites to manage the comic on, plus future Patreon rewards that might limit certain things (would be rather tricky to offer 'early access' pages if the format for such takes a while to create).

I'll just keep trucking on then. Thank you all for your advice. If you have more, or any tips to how best to do this (uploading schedule, if I should space out the uploads more in favor of clumping more pages together, etc, etc), I will be more than happy to hear it! (just keep in mind, two pages a week is the fastest I can make pages with the amount of time and help at present).

A lot of people have already commented on the variety of comics that are here and how format can be flexible so I won't repeat them.

I would say that if posting the comics here doesn't eat into your time that much, just do it. Anything that gets it out there where people can see it is good.

I'd also say that if you are going to leave, it's best to do it as un-dramatically and as politely as possible. Somebody I was reading put up a message threatening to leave a while back because of low numbers and it felt a bit like a kick in the teeth. It's super important to let the followers you do have know that they are appreciated. People have different views on this but, to me, keeping things on a positive note most times is pretty important.

My numbers here are lower here than other places but I really like the people who read my stuff and that I interact with so I'm more than happy to keep posting.

I took a look and I think your format is definitely much better suited for tapas than webtoons. I've seen so many people on tapas who post page long episodes! But the trick with that is that they post very, very often rather than once a week. They seem to get way more views than people like me who post once a week in bulk because the more you post, you have more time to be on the fresh section and someone is bound to take a look. If you are thinking about posting on both websites, I would suggest posting page by page often on tapas and in bulk on webtoons once a week or two weeks. I've even seen page episodes be suggested on daily snack for tapas app! As long as your pages have some substance you should be fine with page posts. Just keep going and keep trying! I wish you the best

I've not been here long enough to even warrant any sort of leaving drama XD Nor am I making decisions based on views.

Yes that is exactly what I wanna do with my comic, should I even attempt two different kinds of format. Perhaps I am overestimating how long it would take to do that sort of switching. Admittedly I've not tried it, but looking at your example That actually doesn't seem all that hard to do.

Huh...maybe I can do both afterall. I'll see what I can do as far as trying it and seeing if I do get the time =)

Thank you all very very much for the advice! It might take a bit to get into a new style or groove (and the timing for all the sights might be a pain), but maybe I can pull it off.

People is always saying "Too short" even in long scroll down formated comics. That happens to a lot of artists that I know, so don't let it discourage you and keep posting as you can :+1:

Hey, I just read your comic series and I think your current format is fine. You are growing at a great rate too! you have 350 views across roughly 5 uploads which are pretty good numbers. HANG IN THERE and keep going!!! You will eventually see the numbers you want in the long run. "Slow motion better than no Motion" - Common

True this =) Though the first one has a collective 40 pages in it...I think that's cheating XD It technically is 44 pages in total so far, so its only 350 views for 44 pages, not 5.

I'll keep at it though. Thank you to anyone who gave it a read! Things will look up from now on =)
