All over the internet we cried over Akira Toriyama but we didn't react much when Yu-Gi-Oh's creator Kazuki Takahashi died? ...And I mean we all know that Yu-Gi-Oh is a big deal in the anime world

Ah, the blinkered world of fandom.

There is no comparing the two in popularity and in the scope of influence around the globe. Goku is up there with Superman and Mickey Mouse as far as public recognition is concerned. Toriyama dying hit a lot of people because even non-weebs knew of the guy's work. Dragonball IS anime for most people.

Most people are not weebs.

Takahashi dying at 60 is a terrible thing and is yet another proof that the Japanese comics industry desperately needs to mend its ways. Mourn if you loved his work. But his death not having he same impact is solely due to his work not having the same impact.

I saw tons of tribute/RIP images on Twitter, and plenty of news articles. Then again, I'm a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh, so I probably sought them out moreso.

What the above post said. Dragonball is one of the most influential media works of the 20th Century. Yu-Gi-Oh, while very popular, doesn't have the same household recognition.

For me personally, I have far more nostalgia for Akira Toriyama's work than I did for Yu-gi-oh.
