Hello, everyone, I've searched for a post about what time do readers read the most but couldn't find one, so I make this post and for researching.

  • At night before bed
  • Whenever I have free time or at break time

If you choose at night, do you dim your phone screen brightness to the lowest?

  • Yes
  • No, but I just let it auto

And for the last question, for the 4 pictures below, which one do you prefer?

  • Panels with black base color
  • Panels with dark yellowish tone base color
  • Panels with dark gray base color
  • Panels with white base color

Thank you for your time :innocent:

Any dark panels in large white spaces makes it hard for the eyes to see extra details within it. If you need that heavy contrast for an effect that's fine, but keep in mind if you want your readers to appreciate hours of details within darker panels.

This is great, thank you, guys. So more readers preferred the dark gray base color, I hope Tapas will accept this new style since nowadays smartphone has dark mode/theme, or maybe Tapas can implement a feature in Tapas app to flip the base color from light to dark, how cool is that!

The yellowish one does work, but it's too saturated for that specific panel. You'd need to come up with a more plain shade, specifically one closer to "red" if you're wanting it for people who are lowering their screen brightness anyway. Since "blue" is harsh on the human eye and causes pupils to shrink, whereas red light is dimmer and causes the eye to dialate. It's why photolab "dark rooms" have red lights in them.

Black base or dark grey.
It is less contrast and not hurting the eye, and the darkness of base is helping the panels to pop.

I always have my phone at the lowest brightness possible and it is always in reading mode.

I see.
For an experiment, whether dark gray can fit with the bright scene in comic panels, so I try to cut a couple of comic panels available and edit them by changing the white base color to dark gray, and my reaction from this

and after changing the base color to dark gray, my reaction

Not only dark gray base color can fit with bright scene but also I can focus better on the panels.

The poll options are pretty limited. I usually read all my webcomics first thing in the morning, while eating breakfast. Though sometimes I also check them right before bed. I do have a screen dimmer I use for when it's dark. And also I read on desktop. :stuck_out_tongue:

And yeah, I agree that the dark background looks better. The white and yellow are kind of hard to look at.
