quick question: would we be allowed to add a visual gags/dialogue references from an anime or game? like, say, in a panel in the background would it be ok to have a blurred out poster, toy, or model that looks like something from X series or would that fall under copyright, especially if we're in the ad revenue program?

That's fine in my eyes. If it's something that a character is , like to show that they're a nerd, and you fill their room with posters and figures, that's fine.

If you're blatantly referencing series/name dropping in succession hoping to get people to recognize them and associate your series with it, than I feel that's not quite right.

I've read books (that have made millions of dollars) that reference nothing but real-life brands and IP. However, I know the rules behind this are much more strict when it comes to TV - although I'm not at all sure about comics.

I tend to make up fake brands and companies rather than reference any real ones (although this is also because the universe is a different one than our own). It's a way of being safe - and it's a method I've seen often in cartoons - even if the object closely resembles the original content of the franchise/etc; it's probably okay if it's important to your story or an indicator; as simply having a reference would not be enough I'd think.

Particularly when it comes to "lines." Tons of shows use lines from popular media within their own story to put an emphasis on a moment or make a joke. You can also make homages, etc.

Many copyright holders just don't want you copying something exactly.

As long as you keep it vague enough its usually ok. Companies care most about direct use of thier logos without permission and obvious infringement on intellectual property- that is, direct copying of someone else's work.

Steven Universe does this sometimes- You can see little anime figures and some books that look like Sailor Moon manga lying around in Steven's room.

It's fine, the odds of them suing you are so low it might as well be zero.

these are some good points, thanks everyone! i'll have to wait & check if tapastic has an issue with it tho
