Underwhelming masterpieces

I'm just going to ask, anyone else here reading through this thread and thinking "How dare you?" at a few of the responses?

I'm not going to pick any fights or anything, just want to know if anyone else is feeling the same.

Anything Marvel and DC. Most Disney movies. All Disney remakes.

There's plenty.

But that's also why you make the judgement yourself. I like to really analyze/overthink movies, animes and shows I watch.
My own personal rule on if I think it was a good movie/show or not is whether I'm still thinking about it weeks after watching it.

examples that come to mind for movies: Parasite, Joker.
I should name anime since you mentioned one but I rarely watch nowadays

I don't know if anybody considers this a masterpiece but I remember when Eragon was really hyped mostly because it was written by some dude who was like 17? and I couldn't get past the first chapter.

Yeah Eragon was absolutely a book written by a 17 year old. I was also bored and underwhelmed.

For me the last thing that a lot of people are talking about but I thought wasn't great is PEN15. Like, this is about my middle school era and so I should be like...super nostalgic for it, but literally nothing in this show is relatable. Also, I think they did a boring job styling the 00's. Everyone looks like a Dahlias catologue. There's no goth kids or weird kids or alt kids--just everyone is the same bland kid. Also there were some historical innacuracies for the period that no one cares about but bothered the hell out of me because I lived it.

Also it's so cringe I just couldn't. I couldn't with this show. It should be like It's Always Sunny meets Freaks and Geeks but it just didn't deliver a single joke for me. That and the underage actors having to act alongside a 30 yo pretending their 12 gets helllla awkward when it gets to sex stuff. I know the kids are fine and often replaced with doubles, but my brain couldn't do it. It was just...ew. Don't like it.

Great Gatsby, Handmaids tale, basically half the books given to you in school. Don't get me wrong, I love the shit out of some mandatory books in school (Like Lord of the Flies or Metamorphosis) but some were just famous because reasons or whatever and are ultimately bland and boring when seen through a non biased lens.

There have been a couple "NO! How dare you!" moments for me, but otherwise to each their own. We aren't all going to like the same things. That's what makes us unique. So I got over that feeling fairly fast.

Same. I prefer mob psycho 100 than one punch man and maybe one punch man got the hype that mob psycho deserved because it was the first series from One that got a manga adaptation and anime (especially from a guy who amateurly draws and uploads his work in the internet).

I think the hero of olympus series from the percy jackson books was underwhelming. The romance from other main characters were rushed and unnecessary. The story drags on. I stopped reading in the fourth or third book. But I kinda get the concept with the greek and roman mythology meeting since they're basically the same but I don't know, I already grew bored with the books.

I don't know if Mitch Albom's works are masterpieces and while I enjoy most of his books. I can't like Finding Chika, it reminds me of youtube family vlogging channels' content and the selfie he took with the subject of the book literal minutes or hours before her death, lying on her literal death bed, made me uncomfortable (he also bought a land for her to be buried in which could be nice without the context)...

This! I liked Black Panther, enjoyed Wonder Woman (even though it was cheesy), and was entertained by some of the X-Men movies. And... that's about it. I think I actually fell asleep in the middle of the first Avengers movie back when it came out.

For me, though, I think it's that I'm not crazy about action scenes? And in superhero movies, the action just goes on and on and on for ages without any dialogue or character development. I'm good with some action if it furthers the characters' journeys, but if it's just... stuff blowing up and the hero jumping around... I tend to space out until somebody actually says something.

IT #2. It didn't have the same jump scenes like the first one. If anything, I actually laughed at the scary scenes (mind you, I get scared from watching Ghost Adventures, so if I'm laughing at a horror movie, it ain't scary).

Both Frozen movies. I heard they were fantastic and went to watch both in theaters because of this. They are not fantastic. They're okay, but the writing isn't Disney's sharpest.

Tangled is far better than Frozen and that is a hill I am gonna die on.

Also Big Hero 6 was just okay. Loved the ideas it had and the character designs, wished they went a bit more "Anime/Comic book/Tokusatsu" with both it and its animated spin off series.

I remember falling asleep during Suicide Squad. I think it was around the latter part of the movie and they were fighting that goddess lady I can't remember the name of.

That was the first and only movie so far I've fallen asleep while watching it in cinemas. Granted it was late, but still, lmao.

I agree with your points. I enjoyed Frozen, but I do really love Tangled. I can watch Tangled more times than Frozen and not get tired of it and I loved the music more in Tangled. My family and I do like to watch Frozen for Christmas though, but the 2nd one wasn't my family's cup of tea. My parents, who loved the first Frozen, can't even stay awake for the second one. Not saying it's bad, I actually enjoyed Frozen 2, but it's just funny the difference of between my parents' reactions for each movie xD

Frozen 2. Man, I realized how underwhelming Frozen was as I got older but hot damn I still got my hopes up. Watched it and was disappointed. I watched it with friends so yea it definitely made the experience better, we questioned the movie's logic and writing when we got out of the cinema, lmao. Honestly, I liked what everyone at first thought was the plot, that "there were multiple people with powers based on the seasons, with Elsa as the person representing winter".

Anyway, the hill I'm dying on is that Frozen 2 would've worked better as a short, 1-2 season animated series. It would've at least given more breathing room for the plot and also lend Kristoff some ACTUAL character development.

Hmm... I remember really disliking We Were Liars by e. lockhart. It was because it was really boring and was filled with so much unnecessary metaphors it was like someone tried to mash together poems and novels, iirc.

Okay, I think I can talk a little about why I didn't like Anohana, because it's not really tied to the plot so technically not a spoiler.

A lot of the series' emotional drive hinges on you getting invested in the the main characters' lost childhood friendship, yet they never struck me as having ever been close friends in the first place. The very first scene starts with the conflict of a love triangle. In fact, the friendship aspect always took a backseat in favor of romantic strife to the point that, with the exception of one or two characters, I never got the feeling those kids actually liked each other
So yeah, the nostalgia of long gone days of childhood innocence was lost on me.

I also somewhat agree with your Violet Evergarden example. It's a beautifully done series, the soundtrack is amazing, the backgrounds are gorgeous and the animation is fantastic - but almost distractingly so. Often I felt that it concerned itself so much with the visual presentation and the story was just there to accompany the pretty images.
