I procrastinate by doing character surveys, but tend to get bored with all the repeat questions. I wanted to share a few that help my writing best and see where they took other people.

The Specific and Silly
-What smell do they associate with their childhood?
-How much time do they spend on their looks? What do they spend it on?
-How is their posture?
-Do they believe in soul mates?
-What would they do with three wishes? Would they lie if asked? Would they wish differently than they like to imagine they would?
-How do they treat service workers?
-How does your character react to being sick?
-How responsible is your character with money?
-What kind of shoes do they wear?
-What's their weirdest superstitions?

My fav writing helpers
-What's one thing they would never tell anyone about themselves, even their closest friend?
-When are they most confident? When are they most insecure?
-What is their greatest virtue? What is their fatal flaw?
-What's a soft spot? What brings out a cruel streak?
-What loss, revelation, or change would shake their foundation as a person the most?

Ooo love these! Character surveys are the best procrastination - like, you're still working :joy:

These questions are great! I have a story I'm developing where in the answers to these questions are really helpful!

Especially the last question. In the story, the three main characters were a part of this traumatic experience in different capacities. It's revealed one of them is indirectly responsible for it. This revelation shifts the groups dynamic and forces the lead to choose between her friends who are taking drastically different paths at this point in the story.

It's hard to go too into detail, but these questions really help put reasoning behind their choices and that's so awesome. Thank you for this!

I rarely do surveys for my characters but I was kind of amazed that quite a few of these are actually answered in my actual story  For most other surveys I feel that they are very much catering to contemporary stories which doesn't always fit with the stories I'm writing

Good news for my comic: I can answer all the questions!
Bad news: I'm trying to compact the story and some information will be omitted.

But I will be glad to explain all of them if any reader wants to know.

I am surprised by how quickly I was able to answer these. Sounds like I spend too much time thinking about my characters and their backstories, hope I can reflect that in the comic :S

These are pretty fun questions! I managed to answer them, it's a fun excercise that's not writing a script/prose.

These are great! Plus it does help in writing their character more ahah

I spent a good 2 hours going back and forth with my gf and our OCs. It gave us some fun insights.

Me not know if it good idea to pull characters out of lounge just for survey. For sure they am going to ask why they not working.

I would also love to see people’s answers to these!

I didn't see anyone post answers so I didn't want to post mine, whoops -

Here's the answers for the main character of Splitting Image1, Mortimer.

-What smell do they associate with their childhood?
Onion sauce, polished rock(from the palace flooring), paper.

-How much time do they spend on their looks? What do they spend it on?
He spends very little time, making sure the braids are done and the hair is at the right size, and keeping his hand injuries clean and bandaged under the gloves if necessary.

-How is their posture?
He stands up in a controlled way, but sitting down he gradually bends towards things, especially if he's reading.

-Do they believe in soul mates?
Nope, there are relationships he'll feel strongly about and relationships he won't, it's never one single person.

-What would they do with three wishes? Would they lie if asked? Would they wish differently than they like to imagine they would?
He'd spend the first two making sure his adopted kids would never suffer from the things he does (and maybe wish they were living with someone else), but the last one on himself to remove his black magic at any cost. The last one would be rather selfish and surprising even to him, and he'd absolutely lie he wished to remove Veriesin's curse or something instead.

-How do they treat service workers?
With utmost care, but also with fear. He's surely below them, though he never saw workers as inferior or superior before, just with a different job.

-How does your character react to being sick?
He metaphorically beats himself up over not finishing work or being unavailable for help.

-How responsible is your character with money?
Very responsible, but spends a lot on little luxuries for the hobs, leaving very little for his own supplies, books and whatnot.

-What kind of shoes do they wear?
Simple painted leather shoes with cushions on the inside and wood soles, painted yellow(NOT gold).

-What's their weirdest superstitions?
He doesn't cast curses or place traps without a known escape; as a tougher escape means bigger collateral damage. That usually means his plans would have very obvious, if complicated solutions.

-What's one thing they would never tell anyone about themselves, even their closest friend?
What really happened at the Novella Palace's throne room. It's spoilers, of course.

-When are they most confident? When are they most insecure?
Cofident when using magic; insecure in crowds or near "important" people, that meaning changing depending on the situation.

-What is their greatest virtue? What is their fatal flaw?
Loyalty; self-blaming.

-What's a soft spot? What brings out a cruel streak?
He loves birds, especially egrets; and changes his tune around two faced people.

-What loss, revelation, or change would shake their foundation as a person the most?
Already happened. It started by taking care of children and realizing he wasn't out of a purpose just yet, then the death of his brother made him realize he had gone too far with his selfish villainy and he's forever unsure if he can really go back from it.

Ah yeaaaahh! I'm doing this  This time I'll answer these questions as Agatha from my comic.

  • What smell do they associate with their childhood?
The smell of freshly baked bread. Some of her earliest memories are of her helping her mother in the kitchen.

  • How much time do they spend on their looks? What do they spend it on?
She barely spends any time on her looks. She never really feels like there's a point to it with her busy days doing housework or helping out in the fields. The most time she spends on her looks is to keep her face and hands clean.

  • How is their posture?
Her posture is excellent. She has very strong back and neck muscles.

  • Do they believe in soul mates?
She wouldn't admit to it, but deep down, yes, yes she does.

  • What would they do with three wishes? Would they lie if asked? Would they wish differently than they like to imagine they would?
She would wish for her mother and younger brother, Erul, to be brought back, she would wish for a trustworthy escort so she could safely travel the world, and she would wish to see her future. She wouldn't lie about it, and her desires are pretty obvious to people who know her.

  • How do they treat service workers?
Well... in the setting she lives in, service workers include household servants, hired guards, apprentice tradesmen, etc., so... it's a bit different. And since Agatha is a farmer's daughter, she is in pretty much the same social class as a lot of servant class people. In that sense, she is very polite to servants.

  • How does your character react to being sick?
It depends on how sick she is. If she's not very sick, she basically continues her day as usual, but if she's very sick, she will stay in bed, but she won't ask for help with anything.

  • How responsible is your character with money?
Agatha is very frugal; she only spends what she needs and saves the rest.

  • What kind of shoes do they wear?
Sandals or cloth shoes. Other materials are too expensive.

  • What's their weirdest superstitions?
The belief that lying results in being jinxed.

  • What's one thing they would never tell anyone about themselves, even their closest friend?
Sometimes she resents her mother for having died and leaving them behind. Even though she knows it isn't her mother's fault, she can't help but be angry at her.

  • When are they most confident? When are they most insecure?
She is most confident in social situations. She loves being surrounded by people and chatting or laughing with others. She is most insecure when she thinks about the future, because she never foresaw much of a future for herself.

  • What is their greatest virtue? What is their fatal flaw?
Agatha is incredibly caring. She naturally wants to help people, and for people she particularly cares about, she ends up "mothering" them. This is both a virtue, but also a flaw, because she sometimes comes off as naggy or patronizing.

  • What's a soft spot? What brings out a cruel streak?
Shyness makes her W E A K, especially in men. She loves teasing people who are shy. She finds it so cute to see their reactions. As for what brings out her cruel streak... When she discovers that someone she trusted has lied to her, she becomes so angry that she wants to lash out and make them feel bad about themselves. She will use the nastiest of insults to get back at that person and redirect her frustration at dishonesty by accusing them of lying about everything.

  • What loss, revelation, or change would shake their foundation as a person the most?
If her father died. She lost her mother when she was 13, and since then, she has had to grow up too fast. If she lost her father too, she would feel like the world was ending.

Here's answers for L from LnR:

* What smell do they associate with their childhood?
Garlic, cinnamon, petrichor (smell after rain) and wall paint.

* How much time do they spend on their looks? What do they spend it on?
He's a bit of a high maintenance type. It takes him longer to pick his clothes or how he styles his hair. Always making sure his hands are clean since he works in the food industry.

* How is their posture?
He slouches. He also stands pretty awkwardly.

* Do they believe in soul mates?
Yes.

* What would they do with three wishes? Would they lie if asked? Would they wish differently than they like to imagine they would?
He would wish for time travel, to be there for his younger self who's been bullied. Second would be to find his dad and third... to undo whatever mistake he's done in a past relationship.

* How do they treat service workers?
He treats them equally and politely, even if at times others don't treat him with respect.

* How does your character react to being sick?
He groans in bed.

* How responsible is your character with money?
He keeps it in a safe compartment where he can forget it's there so later he'll discover there's money in there... for discipline.

* What kind of shoes do they wear?
Leather shoes.

* What's their weirdest superstitions?
If he doesn't cover up his feet that's outgrown his blanket, a monster will drag him under his bed.

* What's one thing they would never tell anyone about themselves, even their closest friend?
The backstory of his dad. Possibly too hard to even tell just anyone.

* When are they most confident? When are they most insecure?
Confident during a trainer battle tournament and when he's cooking... insecure around almost everyone he needs to interact with, so he really lacks in the social skills department.

* What is their greatest virtue? What is their fatal flaw?
He has strong morals. His flaw would have to be losing himself to all the negativity around him, self-loathing.

* What's a soft spot? What brings out a cruel streak?
He loves cute animals, like racoons or opossums and cute illustrations. He does show his bad side when catches someone stab him behind his back. He'd be quiet without saying a word but he's actually angry and would ignore people to avoid conflict.

* What loss, revelation, or change would shake their foundation as a person the most?
It's happened in his preteen years and young adult years. It made him fear letting go of his childhood and somewhat kept him behind from his brother, who was growing up too fast for the both of them.
