I just released the first page of a new comic I'm trying to get made, my main character is called Winston Abara ^^ I named him Winston after actor Winston Duke, who was a huge inspiration for me. His last name comes from African origin because I wanted him to be descended directly from one of the last hunting tribes left in the world, namely the Hadza. My comic is called The Preserve! Where a hunter and artist have to team up to compete in the world's largest event, the monster-hunting game of...THE PRESERVE!
Hey, good day. Thank you for the opportunity to share with others! My new novel's current protagonist is named Aurkena Silva-Ruiz, gender-neutral nickname Keni.
Aurkena means Present.
Silva means Forest; sounds like silver.
Ruiz means Famous Ruler.
All of these things are very important to note and will come up during the series, called the Ostelum Saga. Please do check it out if you are interested. Hope you enjoy it if you do try it!
Genres: Fantasy/Supernatural, Post-Apocalyptic Fiction, Action, LGBTQ+
Patience means patience!
Really, I wanted one of those femme names that are just words like Grace or Charity. And I particularly wanted one that sounded older like Prudence or Temperance because of the historical setting. Additionally if it could be helped I wanted something that sounded close to 'Pet' without being the obvious choice of Petunia.
So I settled on Patience!
I actually reasearched this before making my characters name, so I already know. ^^
So Vernon is a Norman surname (which fits him because in universe he is the equivalent of a notherner), it essentially mean Alder (which is his father's name)... Yes, like the tree, all members of his species in universe have names derived from plants.
Grey is quite simply named after the color, because he is literaly Grey, and on a meta level because he is morally Grey and generally tries to put his mindset in between the two other characters so his view of subjects is Grey.
His real name however is actually Uthum, his old village is named Uruk and their cultured is based on ancient sumeria so he is actually named after Utu the sumerian god of justice and the sun... And he does pass judgment on some folks, albeit with lead as opposed to fire.
Azreth is the only one with a completely made up name, however his name has a meaning in universe.
Dragons have their own secret language (which I haven't completed a full lexicon for yet), Essentialy they have a word for each thing and when you tie words together it becomes one thing, so essentialty all dragon real names are also titles. Azreth is two things,
Azer which means fire, or flame.
Reth'ar which means son, particularly, the first born.
So his name would be something along the line of fireborn (which is meant to tie into the fact that his father is a fire dragon)... But this is all sort of made up, so take that with a grain of salt if you will. ^^
Most dragons also have a 'social name' they use to deal with non-dragons because having people saying their real name constantly is like having someone coming up to you and spewing all the many titles you have every time they call you... Which can be a problem.
Dragons often create nicknames for dragons they are intimate with, a habit that Azreth himself has as he tries to come up with nicknames to everyone around him. ^^
Anyway, this is more details about JTA. Hope you will check it out ^^
Being living embodiments of the seasons, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring, Rainy and Dry are self explanatory XD. As are their parents, Nature and Time.
Margarita's nickname is Mago, which is Spanish for Magician/sorcerer.
Mimo is Spanish for Mime. His real name is Josiah Keats which is inspired by Joseph "Buster" Keaton.
Asa... I wasn't sure what to name her so I went with Asa because it reminds me of the Spanish word for clown, Payasa
I would my mc's names are less about the direct meaning and more about what these names bear.
Andrew "Andy" Andleswitz - Andy comes from "a man". It's a family tradition to have names start with an A. Like his relatives are Adam, Agness, Angelica, Alexander and so on.
Baxtor "Bax" Carlyle Hearthold-Hunt - comparing to Andy, his full name is long and it actually shows clash of his father's and mother's side. Mom wanted him to be Carlyle Hearthold, while father wanted him ot be less judged by his family name (since Heartholds are known in their world) and gave him simpler name and less known surname - Baxtor Hunt. guy likes to be called Bax and uses surname Hunt, which lowkey shows he is more on father's side. It's a running joke that he is irrated when called Carl.
My main characters' names are
Siran Rochefort
Siran(it's a unisex name btw) = which means alluring
Rochefort = latinized as "of the strong rock" or strong/sturdy rock
Leonel Bruguiere
Leonel = The Lion/ Lion
Bruguiere= derived from Bruyere which means "heather" or "a place where heather grow"
Bonus:
A Lion symbolizes a "king"
Heather flowers means luck, admiration, cleansing, beauty but can also be associated with solitude
Which I can say it matches them pretty well in their personalities and back stories
My main character's name is Tessa Vivuk.
It has no actual meaning, and if someone finds one I'm gonna find it hilarious.
None of the characters in my novel have actual reason behind their names (so far), because there's not really any need for their names to be symbolic or important. Though if there is meaning to someone's name, it'll probably be used for completely satirical, subversive, and/or comedic purposes.
I think I named the character "Hei" using English to Mandarin or Cantonese for completely ironic purposes. It was something like "dark wind" or "forsaken orphan", something entirely dark and edgy because I found it hilarious that he doesn't give a damn about his past or name. And if "Hei Zhao Gazat" translates to something like "Dark Chicken Leg" or worse, I'm gonna laugh for a straight 30 minutes. Maybe more.
She looks adorable @onyisart
@Lady_T_Musings I like arabic names, they're pretty unique
@joannekwan hahahaha, well at least the name is pretty straightforward
@alcchron wow the name sounds really inspiring, also reminds me of eren from attack on titan as well, maybe it has the same meaning as well
"Azra" is a short form of "Azadeh" which means free or liberated, and the story is a journey of Azra's liberation. Ironically, Azra means "pure", or "virgin" while my main character's journey revolves around her falling in love for the first time and experiencing life as we know it.
If you guys like spy fantasy, check this out:
Azra is a spy for the House of Veils whose mission is to get close to darkly magnetic Devin to retrieve information about chaos magic. Earn his trust. Learn his secrets. Fall in love? Her deception with Devin offers her giddying heights she never knew, but the time is coming when he will find out the truth about her. Can the girl who was never allowed a heart find a way to keep from losing hers?
Ahiko is a japanese name that means beloved child. Not that I planned it that way, but I really do like the name, because it does reflect upon the story a bit. I have also met a little kid with that name too while I was working at the museum, and it was so FREAKING COOL!
Rokuzo, Enossa, Nasen. Well, I usually make up names so they don't really have a real world equilivent.
Nasen was derived from the name Norin. I really liked that name, but Norin was used in a Sci-fi short I wrote a while back, so I decided to change it up and reapply it.
Enossa is the elongated name for Eno, which my boyfriend suggested. Its actually really cute when he asks to name some of my charaters, and he does come up with some cool names.
Rokuzo. Oh, I don't really remember how I came up with this name. I think I was just throwing clusters around until I though it sounded cool, and something that would fit in his world. Although, even though the naming process was well, unstructured, I did have some basis to my method. I wanted to derive the name from the word Rose (Japanese katakana rozu), as I have always seen this character as the duality of a rose. Beautiful and elegant, but rough and dangerous. His nice name does hail back to his name sake, Rozu.
Spider Lily or Lillian, was based off the flower and the belief that the flower brings death. Her code name, being the death flower, and her real name, which is comparably plain.
Polyphaga His real name to me is unknown, but his code name is based off of a vast beetle family. This is due to he fascination of bug shaped arcane constructs. Although I has not shown initally in my comic so far, in past iterations he did have small beetle bombs. (which i want to bring back)
Most of my characters and their names come from nowhere just from thinking of what name I think would suit them best.
(I'm actually having a lot of fun with this so here's all chapter 1 characters)
Joyce: Apparently it originates from a latin name Ludocus which means "Lord"
Not what I had in mind, but I like that there's more complexity to her name than I originally thought haha
Seth: Originates from hebrew which means "Appointed." Definitely doesn't match his character well whoops-
Alex: The name originates from the english language meaning "Defender of the people" which I absolutely love and it fits her so incredibly well aaa!!!
Brianne: Comes from America which means "high and noble." Fitting!
Ray: Has many origins, most of which mean "defender/wise protector" which also quite fitting??? I love this???
