My favorite is Bleach. I like the characters, I watched all 366 episodes, the attacks are very cool, and I really like how strong they make the villains. It really made me feel like Ichigo had no chance, but then he worked really hard to get a new ability and he won. Plus, it was in a way that wasn't lazy, like Deku vs Overhaul. Deku is losing? Let's just make him use 100% of his power. I found it pretty lazy. I preferred Mirio vs Overhaul because Mirio was an absolute CHAD and it gave me Bleach vibes.
I feel like it's cliche to say Fullmetal Alchemist, but it's one of those series that really stuck with me over the years. The story, worldbuilding and characters were just so compelling and it always struck a good balance of super serious and light-hearted moments, and I can only dream of writing something that good someday. I was also really into like, InuYasha and later Naruto and Bleach back in the day, and they were certainly influential to me, but I fell off with all those series after awhile because they were just...too long.
The Digimon anime also holds a really special place in my heart and I get just as excited about it now as I did almost twenty years ago, and that series has always been hugely influential on my creative work.
Favorite currently airing series is probably My Hero Academia; it's been awhile since I found a series I genuinely enjoy that much. Pretty much every episode makes me smile.
So many of my favorites, but Aggretusko series is the only anime I felt the most joy watching it, and I found myself behave like a kid watching the show.
One of the few animes I prefer English dub more than sub.
The show is so relatable and realistic, and the characters are very likable (even Anai). The comedy and sad moments are so on point to me. I can't say it's my no1. anime but it is my most enjoyable.
Looking forward to season 3
Code Geass is excellent because of Lelouch as it's driving force! I also like the Unlimited Hyoubu Kyousuke because of Hyoubu XD Love that morally gray MC with all the power apparently. They didn't inspire me to make Ring Spell buuut my MC may shift to reflect my love of that character type later on
I have a tattoo of Attack on Titan's Wings of Freedom, but this anime is tied as my #1 favorite with Tokyo Ghoul and Love Stage. I love anything with shock factors as well as fan service. I rarely admit that I like fan service stuff because these types of shows are made of so much online, so I just keep my mouth shut.
I used to say I enjoy Sword Art Online, but not anymore. I live in Japan and it's notoriously considered bad here. If you say you like SAO, people will tell you you're a 'bad anime fan.' Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? is fine, though.
Same! I really love Aggretsuko. Definitely up there as some of my favorite anime. I really like how the anime depicts how every character isn't really bad or good and the way it depicts relationships realistically.
Someone also noticed that the original Japanese voice acting is like the way actual people talk. It's really nice.
I'm really happy the series managed to get a 3rd season
For anime...
Gintama definitely. What a perfect adaptation of the manga, but also has its own identity. So well done.
I also really like Slayers. But. Nobody knows that series because it's an old 90s one lost to obscurity.
Soul Eater had a lot going for it, right up until they butchered the last half of it and went off book from the manga. I really hope it gets a reboot.
Ghost in the Shell. (All of them!)
Appleseed, Battle Angel Alita, Akira, and Mob Psycho 100 are all good runners up.
I adore One Piece, but the anime has lost its luster for me, so I stick with the manga only there.
It's really difficult for me to choose a favorite anything because there is so much media I've consumed and I really like a lot of things for very different reasons. It's hard to say I like one more than another when they're trying to accomplish completely different things. Instead, I'll mention a few animes that especially stick out in my mind for unique reasons.
Paranoia Agent is probably the first anime that comes to mind when I'm asked this question - not necessarily because it is my favorite anime (it's definitely up there though) but because I find it to be such high quality and rarely find anyone mention it at all, no less seen it. It was created by Satoshi Kon (an anime legend, RIP) and animated by Madhouse - how I would describe it is a psychological thriller about Tokyo experiencing mass hysteria over a boy known as "Shonen Bat" (Lil Slugger in the U.S. version) who rides on roller skates and attacks random people with a golden baseball bat. Incidentally, his victims always happen to be involved in some overwhelming, psychological circumstances and each episode covers either a victim or another person related to a victim. There's also a lot of questions of whether or not Shonen Bat is real and what the attacks mean.
On the other end of the spectrum of significant anime to me is the entire Dragon Ball series. I say it's on the other side of the spectrum because, personally, I don't find it as qualitatively well done as a lot of other series I've seen. Regardless, I can't deny the impact the series has had on my life (my earliest drawings I can remember were DBZ characters, so it may have been the reason I got into art in the first place) and I still highly enjoy watching it. Even when it's "bad," there's a certain charm to Dragon Ball's "badness" that feels unique to Akira Toriyama's sensibilities and I still find myself having fun with it. I've found that I have a greater appreciation for Dragon Ball when I treat it as a comedy more than an action series, which is what Toriyama originally intended the manga to be and why I feel like Dragon Ball Z Abridged has found so much success - because the characters and world lend themselves so well to comedy.
And a third mention to round things out: Hunter x Hunter. What makes this series unique to me is how each arc seems to slot itself into a completely different section of my "enjoyment spectrum." There are a couple arcs that fit into my enjoyment of "standard shonen action done well," the Phantom Troupe arc which I would define as "exceeds shonen action standards," and the Chimera Ant arc (though it seems to be rather divisive among fans) which I find to excel as a story beyond just how it relates to other anime. A lot of anime has the "issue" of arcs being inconsistent quality-wise, but HxH has an inconsistency to its arcs in that they can vary widely on tone, storytelling technique, and focus - which I can understand might be alienating to some audiences but I am all for it.
Bleach is my favourite hands down.
It didnt inspire my current comic but my older work i deleted was heavily inspired by it, but a lot of my main characters dispositions were inspired by Ichigo, the main characters moody teenage attidtude, just took the different specific traits for different characters
